"it's a day to remember all the sacrifices made in american history by people who stood up for their country. hundreds of thousands gave their lives. hundreds of thousands were wounded, and most people probably don't think much about veterans day, but a lot of people do . . . it's a great day for veterans." hundreds of siouxland veterans and their families sat down for a hot breakfast this morning. they packed the deli at the hy-vee on hamilton in sioux city for the free meal. every year on veteransnsay, the grocery stororserves up eggs, hashbrowns, bacac, and sausage as a way to honor the country's past and present military members. it's also a chance for the men and women who served to get together and reminisce. "we do this every year to salute our veterans. they put everything on the line for us and now we are putting food on the line for them, just have a little camaraderie and just to thank them for what they've done," says al metz, the hy-vee kitchen manager. "well it's nice to be recognized you know. once a year, they think about the fact that a lot of these people are heroes and a lot of them have done some pretty spectacular things," says elvin rasmussen, a

across siouxland at the same north and gust upwards of 50 miles per hour. later this afternoon some light snow will begin to mix in as temperatures start to fall into the 30s from west to east. some light and slushy accumulations are also possible in some spots, as the entire system exits around midnight tonight. as we begin to dry out, winds will remain strong tonight and tomorrow with the sunshine set to return and stick around for the remainder >> a strong storm system is menacing the plains with heavy snow and threatening turbulent weather -- even totoadoes -- in iowa andnd missouri. a blizzard warning is in e eect for several kansas counties where up to fiveve inches of snow is expected. denver escaped with light snow, but some flights were canceled at denver international airport. to the north, colorado troopers report several crashes on windy, icy interstate 25 near the wyoming border. a house explosion in northern new jersey has killed one person and left two severely burned.

that's according to the mayor of the town of elizabeth. eleven others were taken to hospitals. the mayor says the blast leveled the two-family duplex "like a pancake." a mass-fatality team is working to recover the bodies of victims and sift through the wreckage of a small business jet that crashed into an apartment building in northeastern ohio tuesdada a florida real estate companan says seven of its associates were among the nine pepele believed killed when the jet crashed in akron yesterday. the hawker jet was just two miles away from its destination when witnesses say it clipped some utility lines and slammed into a small apartment building. no one was home in the apartments at the time of the crash and no one on the ground was hurt. three iowa veterans of the vietnam war reunited to share their unique bond from a war --- in which two of them were shot down. brad hanson has that story.

(ken dehoff, lieutenant) "we were hit by three 51 caliber machine gun positions, and essentially shot out of the air, and crashed and burned. and then wayne and i had the opportunity to get out of that helicopter and get on with lifefe they were flown to safety by this man--chief warrant officer kent crisler. and faculty. the threats added to racial tensions on campus that resulted in the departure of two senior university officials. the online posts discovered on social media included a threat to -- quote -- "shoot every black person i see." police say the person who has been arrested is not a student at the university. another debate among republican presididtial candndates is in the booksksand participanan are feeling better about this one than they did about the last one. although, it still got contentious at times, but it was the candidates arguing with each other, not the moderators. more from nbc's chris clackum.

a sergeant bluff business that was the target of a complaint from a neighbor is getting a show of support. about a dozen people addressed woodbury county supervisors last night to voice support for "leroy mcroberts trucking, incorportate d." a few weeks back, a neighbor filed a complaint that the business was and "eyesore" and an ordinance violation. the board may consider revising the ordinance in question. "as a coach it made me stop and think about 'am i teaching them the exact proper technique' cause he'll do it exactly as i tell him," said rich wilmesherr. at he didn't tell him to do was wrestle again. michchl, guided by his growing confidence takes to the mamafor anototr match. "i didn't know if he'd do it again but for him to step up and say 'yeah i want to' i think says a lot about his character."
