as veterans are honored all across the country, many were right here in siouxland. one of the many ceremonies took place at siouxland freedom park in south sioux city, nebraska this morning. following taps and brief remarks, one korean war

story with ktiv's sam curtiss. bad weather wasn't going to stop gerald muilenburg from speakin wednesday morning. "i asked them what're you going to do," said gerald muilenburg. "they said 'oh just make it faster'." the korean war veteran says it's not often he talks of the time he served. let alone in front of a crowd. "i'm basically a shy person so i stay away from that stuff if i can," said gerlad muilenburg. muilenburg was drafted once he finished college in 1952. he spent almost t year in korea. working in a headquarters company - mainly running a post exchange. selling things like food and clothes. "did not have to fight on the front as they [say] on the line," said gerald muilenburg. but those memories are distant. the sibley, iowa, native doesn't ponder much on what's ahead either. at 85 years old, he walks with a cane. it's kind of like a wooden reminder for his interpretation of veterans day. "it makes you think of where you were and man how time passes," said gerald muilenburg. following his years of service, he worked a variety of jobs. most recently working at

thumb: that he be his own boss. something he was fortunate to do based on what he says was the biggest reward from serving. "coming home in one piece," said gerald muilenburg. in the korean war, nearly 40,000 americans were killed. more than 100,000 injured. a fight he feels is finally getting the identification it deserves. "korea[an] [war] is getting more recognition as we start dying off then it did actually during the last half of the war and since," said gerald muilenburg. sam curtiss, ktiv news four. " in downtn sioux city, another celebration for veterans who served in the korean war also known as "the forgotten war." courthouse in downtown sioux city, specifically hononed those who fougug in the korean war. ktiv's ownwnatt breen had the honor of leading today's ceremony. and, students in mrs. klinker's third grade class in cherokee, iowa sent veterans day wishes to her son. he's serving with the navy aboard the uss cape george in the paciific. students from west sioux community schools in hawarden, iowa packed their gym today. american legion leaders spoke to the students about war. at the end of the event, speaker and commander of the sons of the american legion left everyone with one piece of advice: if you come across a veteran while you ararout, make sure to t tnk them for their service. it's the type of love story you usually only hear about in movies. but for one sixland veteran and his wife, it is a reality as ktiv's tiffany lane shows us tonight.

it's the way they fell in love that falls nothing short of a fairytale. when roger was away for basic training in the army, mary started wriring letters to him after meetetg hihicousin in study hallll this was before ever meeting him face to face. "i was in high school and you were aware of a lot of things that were going on with the guys that were in the service and i just thought it was something i would like to do to write to see if i could make things a little bit easier for somebody," said mary. one thing led to another and before they knew it, they were writing back and forth. one letter turned into several a week. then in may of 1967 roger returned for a month long leave. and, they met for the first time. "he e me off the porch," said mary. "i picked him up at his cousinin house. i just thought he lookok like a little runt because he had a uniforr on. his pants were baggy." that didn't turn her away from roger. but, after a few dates, he left again, this time to vietnam. and the letters between them continued. su "on the letters roger would send, there was one thing on the envelope that kept mary hopeful. he would write how many days until returning.

"i had a chance to send off the painting, so when i get it, then i will send it to you," said roger reading one of the letters. that painting is one roger had an artisismake for mary in vietnam. he carries the original photo with him everywhere he goes. a year-and-a-half after serving in vietnam he returned to the u.s. for good. and, he left mary with an unforgettable surprise. he stopped at her workplace and told her he would never leave again. a few months later, they married and as roger likes to say, "the rest is history." "somebody y aves the house, giveve her a goodbye kiss and say i love you, everytime, everyday,y, said roger. "at night when we e to bed, love you. and that's the way it's always been. that's the way it always will be." almost 5 decades later, the rest

it was a messy day of weather for veterans day! we had everything from severe srms producing gusty winds and decent sized hail to rain turning over to snow in western siouxland during the afternoon. a rain and snow mix could continue into the evening hours and even the early overnight before this system moves out of our area. the wind is going to become one of the biggest issues as gusts over 50 miles per hour are going to be possible. if snow is coming down with that kind of wind, visibilities are going to be an

the usda making big predictions for this year's harvest. they expect farmers to produce a record soybean crop totaling almost 4 billion bushels. that's up 1 percent from last year. illinois tops the country followed by iowa. the corn crop will be the third largest at 13.7 bushels. iowa is numbererne. ththbumber crops is sending prices down. farmers who rent land will struggle to make a profit. consumers shouldn't see much of an effect. still to come... social media comes with a lot of good...and bad. on today's law review, we'll take a look at how

"also, talk a aut the policy on use of personal and company electronic devices. cover social media do's and don'ts, as well. for example, if your company is a restaurant, you don't want your employees posting pictures licking the

food. remind your employees to act professionally both at work and on social media." what if an employee has already used social media inappropriately and damaged their brand? "bouncing back after a social media take down can be both tough and costly," goosmann said. volleyball tournament will be a babale between two siouxland teams. number-1 western christian and number-2 unity christian are the favorites -- but first, they had to get out of the opening round. sports fource is "on the road" in cedar rapids. ktiv's mark freund is live with more. it's all about tradition for the sioux county powers. unity christian is making its 17th appearance in cedar rapids, with 5 state titles - western christian has been here a state-record 33 times, with 13 state championships . the knights and wolfpack had quarterfinals to worry about first. western christian, 40-5 on the year, taking on council bluffs st. albert. second set, wolfpack up one set to none - and kaira moss goes to work - the senior with an absurd kill to the floor there. next point - st. albert trying to attack - moss gets in there for a block - western cruising

close out the set - moss had a game- high 15 kills. third set now - match point for emily van ginkel - and she closes it out down the line - western sweeps its way into the semifinals. "we're trying to keep our heads up really high and celebrate every point and never give up," said senior kaira moss. "always worry about ourselves and keep going as a team and try not to worry what the other team is doing." "i thought we came out really confident and played really well in game one," said western head coach tammi veerbeek. "we knew we had a height advantage and a size advantage going into this game so we hoped to frustrate them early at the net. you could tell the experience of being at the state tournament started to pay off in that game two and we kept plugging away and we were able to get the win. unity christian - looking to join western in the semis - against sumner-fredericksburg. knights dropped the first set - in the second set, anna kiel gets the kill off the block - helping unity to a 27-25 set win. we go to the fourth set, with the knights down 2-1 in the match - it's kiel again - 23 kills for kiel - keeping

but sumner-fredericksburg closes it out to win the fourth set 25-21 - unity is upset, 3-1. "we were not taking anything for granted, there were just some things they were doing today," said unity head coach patty timmermans. "they were on fire and we had a hard time stopping. we found ourselves out of system too much and they were staying in-system and they were able to do what they wanted to at the net." "overall we had an amazing season and i'm blessed to be able to play with such an amazing team and such amazing girls," said unity senior anna kiel. unity finishes 36-5. the 2a semifinals between western and are at 4 o'clock on thursday. thanks, that's mark freund live in cedar rapids. it's been 30 years since sgt.

bluff-luton made it to the state volleyball tournament. the 11th-ranked warriors faced second-ranked kuemper catholic of carroll in round one of the 3a tourney. sbl had to play from behind much of the match. first set - kylee christensen - just a sophomore - rises and swings for a kill - but kuemper takes the first set 25-15. the second set does go sb-l's way - christensen again - she had 10 kills on the afternoon. then it's the senior, brittni olson - leading the warriors with 12 kills - as sergeant bluff-luton wins the second set 25-23. but sb-l drops the third set - and despite a close 5th set, amy adams and the knights are able to close it out. sergeant bluff-luton fights the #2 team tough, but falls 3-1. "nerves got to us a little bit but in the end they battled, they fought and they gave it everything they got," said sbl head coach renee winkel. "i can't ask any more than that." "we knew coming in it would definitely be a battle," said senior brittni olson. "i guess we just didn't quite come out on top but it was a great season and i was proud to represent sergeant bluff."

record. later tonight, it's an all- siouxland matchup in 1a, as top-ranked central lyon takes on gehlen catholic at 8 o'clock. we'll have those highlights at ten. the hawkeye basketball team will lose two siouxland players next season when mike gesell and adam woodbury graduate. but iowa picked up another northwest iowa recruit today. spirit lake's ryan kriener signed with the hawkeyes and head coach fran mccaffery this morning. the 6-9 senior averaged over 19 points and 8 rebounds per game as a junior. kriener made 71 percent of his shots from the floor last year for spirit lake. the indians also have another division-1 basketball recruit. billy brown signed with north dakota. he's a 6-3 guard who averaged nearly 14 points a game last season. and, joie veldman will play volleyball at minnesota state. thanks to matt heinrichs at the dickinson county news for the photo. cherokee's kaely hummel has signed to play basketball at the university of sioux falls. she's a 2-time all-state selection and already has nearly 12-hundred
