good evening... i'm sheila brummer. (matt) and, i'm matt breen. chances are you've seen men, in all walks of life, growing out their moustaches, and beards, this month. (sheila) it's part of a movement to raise awareness, and money, for cancer. the movement is very personal for woodbury county's sheriff. ktiv's robert lowe explains

especially one who dedicates his life to protecting others. josh would have to undergo next-day surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy . "i tried to stay strong, i remember telling him you'll be all right, i'd leave and come back, i'm an emotional guy, i couldn't hold it together," said sheriff drew. a gun and a badge could do not good. but those at the june e. nylon could. that's why more than 70 percent of the sheriff's office participates in no shave november, each donating $30. "to give back to the community. one of the ways we do it we have everybody hear grow beards and we donate the money to june e. nylen. a fact that's not lost on josh, who today, is cancer free. "it shows that they support individuals with cancer and want to help in someway," and as the sheriff's office continues to grow their beard to show their support, josh continues to grow his family "they told me, maybe a 10 percent chance that i could have kids, and then my daughter came and then not a

year later my son came and then hopefully another boy will be on the way. what sheriff drew calls a holiday-time miracle, for a man who's family first. in sioux city, robert lowe, ktiv news 4. josh currently serves in the national guard with the 185th in sioux city. he and his wife are expecting their third child in april. it'll be sheriff drew's fifth grandchild. november is a popular month to sport facial hair. there are two major campaigns going on. one is "movember", and the other is "no-shave november." "movember" raises money for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men's health issues. the goal behind "no- shave november" is to donate the money you'd spend on shaving related products to the american cancer society. no amount of facial hair could keep out those bitter winds churned up by a storm system that sped through

siouxland, today. in addition to rain, hail, and high winds, the storm also dropped snow. its still to warm for it to still to streets, and sidewalks. but, vehicles got a fresh blanket of snow, tonight. (matt) that same system also brought damaging winds-- even tornadoes-- to western and central iowa. ron, where's the worst of it, right now? high wind warning in effect for all of siouxland into tonight wind advisory in effect for parts of siouxland late tonight and thursday it was a messy day of weather for veterans day! we had everything from severe storms producing gusty winds and decent sized hail to rain turning over to snow in western siouxland during the afternoon. a rain and snow mix could continue into the evening hours and even the early overnight before this system moves out of our area. the wind is going to become one of the biggest issues as gusts over 50 miles per hour are going to be possible. if snow

down with that kind of wind, visibilities are going to be an issue. a high wind warning is in effect into tonight with a wind advisory taking over for thursday as winds could still gust between 40 and 50 miles per hour. (matt) as veterans are honored all across the country, many were right here in siouxland. (sheila) one of the many ceremonies took place at siouxland freedom park in south sioux city, nebraska this morning. following taps and brief remarks, one korean war veteran who spoke shared his story with ktiv's sam curtiss. bad weather wasn't going to stop gerald muilenburg from speaking wednesday morning. "i asked them what're you going to do," said gerald muilenburg. "they said 'oh just make it faster'." the korean war veteran says it's not often he talks of the time he served. let alone in front of a crowd. "i'm basically a shy person so i

stay away from that stuff if i can," said gerlad muilenburg. muilenburg was drafted once he finished college in 1952. he spent almost a year in korea. working in a headquarters company - mainly running a post exchange. selling things like food and clothes. "did not have to fight on the front as they [say] on the line," said gerald muilenburg. but those memories are distant. the sibley, iowa, native doesn't ponder much on what's ahead either. at 85 years old, he walks with a cane. it's kind of like a wooden reminder for his interpretation of veterans day. "it makes you think of where you were and man how time passes," said gerald muilenburg. following his years of service, he worked a variety of jobs. most recently working at farmer's marketsts many of his jobs had one rule of thumb: that he be his own boss. something he was fortunate to do based on what he says was the biggest reward from serving. "coming home in one piece," said gerald muilenburg. in the korean war, nearly 40,000 americans were killed. more than 100,000 injured. a fight he feels is finally getting the identification it deserves.

"korea[an] [war] is getting more recognition as we start dying off then it did actually during the last half of the war and since," said gerald muilenburg. sam curtiss, ktiv news four. " in downtown sioux city, another celebration for veterans who served in the korean war also known as "the forgotten war." "o'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave." presenting the colours. and honoring our veterans.. this ceremony at the woodbury county courthouse in downtown sioux city, specifically honored those who fought in the korean war. ktiv's own matt breen had the honor of leading today's ceremony. (sheila) siouxland students paying tribute to veterans today. (matt) students from west sioux community schools in hawarden, iowa packed their gym today. american legion leaders spoke to the students about war.

and commander of the sons of the american legion left everyone with one piece of advice: "if you come across a veteran while you are out, make sure to thank them for their service". student at storm lake st. mary's paying tribute to veterans during a special ceremony that took place today. elementary students sang patiotic tributes to the veterans who attended the event. and, students in mrs. klinker's third grade class in cherokee, iowa sent veterans day wishes to her son. he's serving with the navy aboard the uss cape george in the paciific. students at lyons-decatur northeast gave back to veterans. every student, preschool through 12th grade took part in a special assembly . they do it every year. the students raised $5,000 for a veterans memorial being planned in lyons. jerry ludwig accepted the check and was so moved he couldn't speak. norfolk, nebraska veterans gathered to honor those who served or are serving. retired navy chaplain mike moreno was the guest

speaker at the norfolk veterans home. moreno served eight years on active duty, and still serves in the reserves. he spoke about purpose, and said those who serve put on the uniform so the country can remain strong. moreno went on to say people can honor the veterans who died by following their dreams. has surrendered to sioux city police. (matt) a police department spokesman says 28-year- old jonathan berrio, turned himself in to police on a warrant for second- degree murder, wednesday afternoon. investigators, in florida, say

a homicide that happened on sunday, october 11th, in miami, florida. berrio was believed to be in the sioux city area where he has family. investigators have released the name of the man shot to death to calhoun county yesterday. the iowa department of criminal investigation have intentified him as 41-year old dale currie potter of devils lake, north dakota. he was found dead in pomeroy, iowa. the dci is not releasing any more information surrounding the death investigation. a virginia man had a close call with a school bus.. and says he couldn't believe his eyes when he caught a glimpse of the driver. the man captured the encounter on his cell phone while he was a passenger in a truck traveling alongside the bus. he said the bus driver almost sideswiped the truck.. and didn't even notice. it appears that the bus driver had a handful of papers, and a pen in her hands.. all while transporting several elementary students. a statement from the school system says that student safety is a priority and that they will conduct a thorough investigation and take action as needed. university of missouri police

say they've arrested a suspect accused of making online threats against black students and faculty. the threats added to racial tensions on campus that resulted in the departure of two senior university officials. the online posts discovered on social media included a threat to -- quote -- "shoot every black person i see." police say the person who has been arrested is not a student at the university. "second game was awwesome, but the last game, they came back hard, we came back hard, and it's just a disappointing end, obviously." the 1a semi's are at 6 on thursday night. sgt. bluff-luton at state for the first time in 30 years -- taking on #2 kuemper catholic. first set - kylee christensen - just a sophomore - rises and swings for a kill - but kuemper takes the

first set 25-15. the second set does go sb-l's way - christensen again - she had 10 kills on the afternoon. then it's the senior, brittni olson - leading the warriors with 12 kills - as sergeant bluff-luton wins the second set 25-23. but sb-l drops the third set - and despite a close 4th set, amy adams and the knights are able to close it out. sergeant bluff-luton fights the #2 team tough, but falls 3-1. "nerves got to us a little bit but in the end they battled, they fought and they gave it everything they got," said sbl head coach renee winkel. "i can't ask any more than that." "we knew coming in it would definitely be a battle," said senior brittni olson. "i guess we just didn't quite come out on top but it was a great season and i was proud to represent sergeant bluff." sbl finishes with a 35 and 12 record. number-1 western christian and number-2 unity christian were the favorites going into the class 2a state tourney -- but an all-siouxland final will not happen. ktiv's mark freund has more from cedar rapids. mark says, "it's all about

tradition for the sioux county powers. unity christian is making its 17th appearance in cedar rapids, with 5 state titles - western christian has been here a state-record 33 times, with 13 state championships. the knights and wolfpack had quarterfinals to worry about first. western christian, 40-5 on the year, taking on council bluffs st. albert. second set, wolfpack up one set to none - and kaira moss goes to work - the senior with an absurd kill to the floor there. next point - st. albert trying to attack - moss gets in there for a block - western cruising along. the wolfpack go back to moss to close out the set - moss had a game- high 15 kills. third set now - match point for emily van ginkel - and she closes it out down the line -

"always worry about ourselves and keep going as a team and try not to worry what the other team is doing." "i thought we came out really confident and played really well in game one," said western head coach tammi veerbeek. "we knew we had a height advantage and a size advantage going into this game so we hoped to frustrate them early at the net. you could tell the experience of being at the state tournament started to pay off in that game two and we kept plugging away and we were able to get the win. unity christian - looking to join western in the semis - against sumner-fredericksburg. knights dropped the first set - in the second set, anna kiel gets the kill off the block - helping unity to a 27-25 set win. we go to the fourth set, with the knights down 2-1 in the match - it's kiel again - 23 kills for kiel - keeping unity's hopes alive. but sumner-fredericksburg closes it out to win the fourth set 25-21 - unity is upset, 3-1. "we were not taking anything for granted, there were just some things they were doing today," said unity head coach patty timmermans. "they were on fire and we had a hard time stopping. we found ourselves out of system too much

"overall we had an amazing season and i'm blessed to be able to play with such an amazing team and such amazing girls," said unity senior anna kiel. in cedar rapids, mark freund ktiv sports fource. the hawkeye basketball team will lose two siouxland players next season when mike gesell and adam woodbury graduate. but iowa picked up another northwest iowa recruit today. spirit lake's ryan kriener signed with the hawkeyes and head coach fran mccaffery this morning. the 6-9 senior averaged over 19 points and 8 rebounds per game as a junior. kriener made 71 percent of his shots from the floor last year for spirit lake. the indians also have another division-1 basketball recruit. billy brown signed with north dakota. he's a 6-3 guard who averaged nearly 14 points a game last season. and, joie veldman will play volleyball at minnesota state. thanks to matt hine-ricks heinrichs at the dickinson
