a tragic event in the history of the state of iowa. seven people died in a fiery crash, includidi two young women from siouxland. good evening, i'm sheila brummer. and, i'm al joens in for matt breen. tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of the plane crash involving the cross country team at iowa state university. the pilot, two coaches and a student trainer r l killed. the trainer was stephanie streit from hawarden. she graduated from west sioux high school in 1982. also, on board sheryl maahs from spirit lake. she graduated in 1983. her brother and others plan to honor the victims with a special ceremony in des moines.

gave a lot of herself," maahs said. sheryl and her teammates placed a surprising second in the ncaa national cross country meet in milwaukee. "that mornrng everybody was sky y high, and that afternoon everybody was in mourning," said tim lane. tim lane helped organize a memorial ceremory planned for thanksgiving eve in the very spot where the plane fell from the sky. "i want this to be a celebration. i want the running community to turn out," lane said. a celebration honoring the lives of seven from iowa state. they plan to unveil a new park and everlasting memorial in des moines. "hopefully can go there and reflect about it and if it inspires some people that's great." >> the memorial service will take place tomorrow afternoon in des moines. members of both the mas and streit families will be there. friends and colleagues are remembering a former sioux city community leader who has died. joanne grueskin died at her home in carlslsd, lifornia last night at the age of 79.

grueskin served eight years on the city council in the 1980s and '90s. mayor bob scott, who served alongside her for all of her years, says grueskin was very community-minded and was a trailblalar for wowon in elected office in sioux city. he said he was struck by the put into the job. her husband, earle grueskin, was a former city council member, mayor and woodbury county supervisor. he died in 2009. morrow, the native american community will rally for its youngest members. for the 13th year, the "memorial march to honor lost children" will help honor native american children that some tribal members say have been "lost" to adoption, and foster care. the march starts at 7:30 eagle monument. from there, marchers will walk to the siouxland center for active generations for the first of three prayers at 9:00 a.m. the other two prayers will take place at the sioux city public museum at 10:00 a.m., and at the woodbury county courthouse at noon. atatne o'clock, marchers will meet at the four dirirtions

center, on water street, for a traditional memorial dinner, which is free. many people are going to be traveling the next few days to celebrate thanksgiving. and they all want to know what the weather has in store. for that we'll toss it over to chief meteorologis t ron demers. winter storm watch for harrison and shelby counties thursday 6 am to midnight it was another day of melting with highs in the 40s and 50s in central and southern siouxland with the cooler 30s to the northeast where the snowpack continues to be deeper. a combination of today's melting and more moisture moving in from the south is going to create the possibility of fog and drizzle as we head into the nighttime hours. we could see the drizzle and fog linger through the day on wednesday with maybe even a few rain showers trying to develop as well. this is the beginning of a system that could make travel a little difficult for our thanksgiving

(al) an estimated 42 million people are expected to travel by car over the thanksgiving holiday. (sheila) the bulk of that travel starts tomorrow. and experts say lower gas prices are a big part of the reason. more americans are hitting the road because they're saving more. "a $1.83 here today, unbelievable," said roy soule. "the cheapest it's been in a long time and everybody shouou be traveling nowow said roy soule. the last time people saw these low gas prices over the holidays was 2008. with falling gas prices, plenty are hitting the pumps and taking to the road. triple a expects 42 million americans to

travel by car this holiday weekend. the heaviest traffic is expected the day before and days after the holiday. with thanksgiving just two days away, airports around the country are seeing a steady flow of holiday travelers. that was the case this afternoon at sioux gateway airport in sioux city. travelers departed for chicago o'hare enroute to their f fal destinations, including college students attending school away from home. according to aaa, an estimated 3.6 million americans will be flying to their holiday destinations. we asked you earlier what your holiday plans for this thanksgiving. here are the results from our online poll. 25% of you said you were driving out-of-town for the holidays. 25% of you said you were catching a flight. and 50% of you said you're staying home. having your car broken into or stolen is not a way most people e nt to spend the holiday season. but in sioux city, police have noticed an unusual spike. sioux city police say there have been more than 200 car burglaries since october 1st.

also stolen. "the vast majority have been located within a couple blocks of when said. "so it seems like the go through the vehicle. being used to commit other car burglaries." according to police, majority of the crimes have been by one group ofeople they're investigating. the main areas hit are east of lewis boulevard, the north side and leeds. one of the biggest similarities police see with the burglaries and thefts is that car owners had left their cars unlocked or with the keys inside. and while the investigation continues, sioux city police say there are things you can do to reduce your chances of having your car broken into. never leave your car unlocked. never leave keys anywhere in the car. and don't leave valuable items visible in the vehicle. aside from the group involved in the rash of car thefts, this time of year, police say there's

being a full-time caregiver to an aging relative can be draining... physically and emotionally. but, one siouxland woman found some special ingredients as an outlet for her stress that makes taste buds tingle. ktiv's sarah te slaa shows us how her business is seeing sweet success.

siouxland veterans came together for a morning of comradery. they did so over coffee and donuts this morning in sioux city. the group "support siouxland soldiers" invited them to sit down and meet other military members past and present. "we felt it was a time for them to be able to have a place to go visit with one another, just discuss their timemeand the service that they wanted. and sometimes it's only a vet that understands another veteran and the issues they've been through." there were about 30 people who showed up for today's event. organizers say they hope to eventualal have the meetings at least once a month. another program helping veterans in siouxland. it's called "partners for patriots." dogs get a second chance through intense training some in a surprising location. you'll get to meet an amazing dog named "rocky" who will someday help a disabled veteran get around more easily tomorrow night on news 4 at 10. some sioux city elementary

extra reading today. in an effort to promote reading, all students at hunt elementary got a new book. the e oks were provided by quota international. this is the second year and third time the group has sponsored this. the books serve reading levels from kindergarten to fifth grade. "it's about ships that sink at the bottom of the water," said branquavius long talking about the titanic. "why araryou excicid to go home and reaeaup on it?" asked a reporter. "because i like boats and ships and pirate ships," answered long. quota international says they hope to do a similar event with gloves and mittens in the coming months. the high school football season is officially over. norfolk catholic was ranked number-1 all season in class c1, but still had a tough test in the title game. ktiv's mark freund reports from lincoln. mark: norfolk catholic has taken out the number-2 and the number-6 teams on their way to the class c1 final. the knights have won their 3 playoff games by an average margin of over 32 points per game. catholic, looking to finish off the perfect season against third- ranked columbus scotus. but instead - the knights found themselves playing from behind. catholic trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half - david engelhaupt - hurt in this game - but still trucking through defenders - knights trailed 25-14 heading into the fourth quarter. first play of the 4th - miles vrbka to engelhaupt down the sideline - 90 yard touchdown is the longest t play in a class c-1 championship game - and brings catholic back within 5 points. but scotus answers - the shamrocks torched norfolk catholic for 306 rushing yards - taking a 32-20 lead. the knights actually outgained
