in fact, triple a estimates 46.9 million people will travel this holiday season. the most since 2007. on monday, the state department issued a travel alert. citing "increased terroristic threats." the alert serves as a precaution for travelers to be more aware of their surroundings. with that, triple a doesn't expect any more or less cars on the road. "so they typically don't make a lot of last minute changes." the heaviest traffic is expected the day before and days after the holiday. gas prices are said to be the lowest since 2008. with the national average at about $2.20. there's a lot of public awareness about concussions right now -- especially how these injuries can impact our kids. recovery can take months, and even longer. one high schooler who went down that very tough road... shows us the tool he's developing to help other young people get the fastest diagnosis and best treatment for concussions. doreen gentzler has the story in today's healthbeat four.

(sot: max solender, father) "it was horrible. you don't want to see your child going through that kind of a kind of agony." a full year later - eric was back and in school full time. the early diagnosis was key to his full recovery: (sot: dr. catherine mcgill, child psychologist) "eric's parents did a wonderful job recognizing and responding and because of that even though he had a prolonged recovery, the access to medical care he was able to get quickly did indeed help him." dr. catherine mcgill treated eric and now - she's impressed that her young patient is creating a new tool to help others fight concussions: (nats) this is the microsoft kinect -- and a new test eric is creating in his computer science class. (nats) "this hand's my left, this hand's my right." he's designing it to measure motor skills.. and coordination while moving your hands and feet.. the movements may seem simple, but for someone with a concussion -- they're hard or even impossible to do. and, it's usually the weight you gained over the holidays. so, maybe we can stop it before it starts. just some overall tips so when you do sit down for thanksgiving. i do have a pie with me it's something i usually wouldn't bring as a prop. sheila: i was going to say what's healthy about t can pie? itney: pretty much nothing. but, i broughghit to bring up a point i usually talk about when it comes to holidays or state fairs or special occasions, pick one thing to enduldge in and forget the rest. if you could only have it one time of year it's a great thing to pick. it can be that splurge. but, if it's something you can get anytime of the year. sheila: then save those calories. whitney: if your grandmother makes a great pecan pie and you want to be your spurge then know that head of time so you can kind of plan your plate and know you're going to have it ahead of time. so, it's all about balance i'm t going to tell you u not to eat on thanksgiving. remember you just have to start thinking about the whole meal. everything from when you walk in the door and start nibbling to dessert. so, speaking of walking in the door and nibbling. there's usually always some kind of veggie tray. this is a really good place to snack. and, it's good when you start smelling the

turkey. sheila: i'm just starting to snacking. whiiney: anan you can take greek yogurtrtnd add your ranch dip mix with it. sheila: so, that's what you have here? whitney: yes, it adds a lot of protein and you have the hidden valley ranch dip. and, they do make something specific for greek yogurt. really, i think all they did and not make it as strong. sheila: if you're a dip person you would do that? whitney: i wouldn't even use a whole one for something this size. that's a really good idea if you're the one in charge of ththveggie tray. sheila: what's this? whitney: this is really little cucumbers that i cut sideways. sheila: i thought it was a dill pickel. whitney: it's easier to eat. and, i have some examples here of plates. you still want to keep the "my plate" visual. you still want half of the plate to be half full of veggies, a quarter whole wheat and grains and a quarter and protein. so, the turkey on thanksgiving works out. and, add some lower starchy items. if you like dark meat it is higher in calories. so, i like to mix the two to keep down the calories. sheila: thanks so much. if you would like more information on today's centsable health go to our website ktiv.com and click on the news link. >>
