>> instead ofgood afternoon and thanks for joining us. i'm matt breen in for al joens. a house fire in sioux city's morningside neighborhood kept firefighters busy this morning. when crews arrived on the scene of 14-05 south rustin, just after eight this morning, firefighters found smoke coming from home. fire officials believe the fire started in the kitchen, went up to the ceiling, and into the attic. flames shot through the roof when they cut holes to ventilate it. no one was home with the fire broke out, but there was a cat and a dog inside. crews were able to save the cat, but the family's dog died in the fire. "it's sad. as we came in this morning, it was one of those things that goes through your mind. you hope it's a quiet shift with the holidays and families gathering to celebrate and be thankful for what we do and you hope it's a slow day, but unfortunately it started eight minutes into our shift we had a working house fire," says dan cougill, sioux city fire rescue assistant fire chief.

fire caused extensive damage to the home, and it will have to be repaired before the family can live there again. sioux city police say they've seen a recent rash of car burglaries, and car thefts in the metro. investigators have logged more than 200 car burglaries since october 1st. more than 60 of those cars were also stolen. "the vast majority have been located within a couple blocks of when they've been taken," zach lewis said. "so it seems like the motivation is just to be able to go through the vehicle. sometimes those vehicles are being used to commit other car burglaries." the majority of the crimes have been by one group of people that police are actively investigating. those thieves have hit areas east of lewis boulevard, the north side and leeds. what's made it easier for the thieves? car owners had left their cars unlocked or with the keys inside. a highway stop, in which iowa

pointed weapons at an innocent dark-skinned man, and his 6-year-old son, has prompted a federal lawsuit and claims of racial profiling. details of the september 2014 incident in northwest iowa have emerged in a lawsuit filed by the driver, 32-year-old levi wilson of orange city. he alleges the stop and search were illegal. the iowa division of criminal investigation says officers acted appropriately because they were searching for wilson's brother, david wilson, a sex offender who was wanted on outstanding warrants. officers say the brothers sometimes drove the same truck. levi wilson denies that. today marks the 30th anniversary of the plane crash that killed three members of the iowa state cross country team. the pilot, two coaches, and a student trainer were also killed. among them... was trainer stephanie streit from hawarden, and sheryl maahs from spirit lake. this afternoon, family members of the vicitims and others are holding a special cermemony in des moines to honor those that were lost.

paris made the threat of a terrorist incident in the u.s. fell a lot closer to home. but, in a white house news conference within the last hour, the president assured the american people that he is taking every step possible to secure the homeland. "the combined resources of military, intelligence, and our homeland security agencies, are on the case," said president barack obama. "we're vigilant, relentless, and effective. if there's a specific, credible threat, the public will be informed." the president said there are no credible threats against the u.s. the president told americans to be vigilant. but, he also said americans should go about their

daily lives... and do what they would normally do during the thanksgiving holiday. moscow is still fuming after turkey yesterday shot down a russian fighter jet. today, the russian foreign minister called it a -quote- "planned provocation", in which one russian pilot was killed and also a crew member of a russian rescue helicopter. nbc's richard engel reports from istanbul.

today warned russians they might not be safe in turkey. turkey's president erdogan, in his first public comments since the incident, said, he "doesn't want to further escalate." the same message from president obama. (sot/ president obama) "i think it's very important right now for us to make sure that both, the russians and the turks are talking to each other to find out exactly what happened and take measures to discourage any kind of escalation." the only other democrat in the field, former maryland governor martin o'malley, has just 4-percent support. this is virtually unchanged from the results of an october 23rd survey done by quinnipiac university. you can help decide which turkey gets a presidential pardon today. president obama will hold a traditional ceremony where he spares a turkey before thanksgiving. there are two contestants... a turkey named "honest" and another one named "abe". you can still vote online for which one will take the title of national thanksgiving turkey. but no matter which one wins, they both will spend the rest of their days living peacefully at a farm. this is the first year when you can also cast your vote on twitter. what would thanksgiving be without the macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york city. today, spectators will get to watch the balloons be inflated and prepared for their big day tomorrow. more than ten thousand people-- including dancers, singers and other entertainers-- will be take part. this will be the 89th year of the department store's traditional march down 6th avenue in manhattan. you can watch the parade, right

here in ktiv, and nbc, starting at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. no matter where you travel this week, you'll probably find a store offering big deals on "black friday." the walmart on floyd boulevard, in sioux city, will stay open 24 hours on thanksgiving. they'll begin those "black friday" deals at 6:00pm on thanksgiving day. the company is expecting large crowds, once again, this year. "the safety of our customers and our associates is always a top priority and as in previous years, we'll have store specific crowd management and safety plans. so we're ready for our associates when they arrive on thanksgiving day." walmart representativ es say they will be fully staffed, and have extra check out lines open, to help with the expected crowds. they say one way shoppers can help stay safe, and avoid costly congestion, is to simply ask an associates for help when looking for specific items. for those travelling to celebrate thanksgiving, this year, you might encounter some wintry weather. ben returns after the break to

stocks are slightly higher in early trading on wall street ahead. in the latest sign that businesses aren't cutting many jobs, the number of people seeking u.s. unemployment aid dropped sharply last week. the labor department says weekly applications for jobless benefits fell 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 260,000. amazon has decided to pull a subway ad promoting its new show, "the man in the high castle", following controversy over nazi and imperial japan imagery used in the ad campaign. trains running from new york's grand central station to times square were wrapped in ads for the show, which imagines a world where the axis powers won world war 2. while the ads don't contain any swastikas, they feature the nazi imperial eagle with a cross emblem and wreath.

complete without a tasty pie to top off the turkey. and one rock valley, iowa woman has been busy making more than a hundred homemade pies for the holidays. but her pie business is about more than just selling treats. ktiv's sarah te slaa explains.

business began. 12:18 "i was like, "oh, this is a good use of time," rachael found the recipe that works for her. she makes a little extra money, people get tasty pies, and grandma, frances, helps when she can. 9:55 "i like to call her my ceo. she's like how many pies do we have to make today (cut) 10:20 she keeps me on my toes all the time," but as her grandma gets weaker, their time making treats together gets shorter... and the time just being with each other becomes even more precious. 23:26 "grandma isn't the grandma i remember and grandma is the one that would take care of everybody and when she's not able to do what she wants it's hard to witness. rachael makes her pies around her grandma's schedule... staying up late or getting up early... whenever she can. 17:36 "grandma is always going to be my first priority, but this is something that is totally a side thing that helps me keep my sanity." it's therapy for her... or rather thera-pie. 30:41 "it's the best thing for me because it lets me continue doing the job that i am with grandma because i have an outlet to do something else,"

coming up. here to tell us a little more we have skip and jim. thank you both so much for being here. thank you for having us. so jim, you guys have done this for more than 20 years now, this charity auction. the charity auction's been going on for a little over 20 years. it's evolved from having people bring in items and having an auction to now we solicited merchants and a lot of merchants donate anything from gift certificates to bicycles to tvs. so there's going to be a lot of cool things. there will be a lot of items to bid on. so when is this auction? give us some of those details. it's december 5th, starts a 6 we're having pizza. the auction starts at 7 and usually lasts until

register beforehand, buy tickets, or anything else? no they don't. just come on in and we'll be there. where are you guys located? 1001 triview ave. right along i- 29 in between hamilton and the tyson events center, right? right, west of the tyson events center. skip, how is this money going to be used? what do you guys do with it? the biggest share of this money will go for our christmas baskets. we give our approximately 300-320 christmas baskets every year. each basket has about $125 worth of food in it. we also put in with that some stuffed animals for the kids, we try to take them out and give to the kids. it's just a good thing. some of the money also goes to our different charity events throughout the year. if somebody calls up and they want a little bit of money for something we try to help out where ever we can. why would you encourage people to come out? why do you like this event? it's just a fun event. everybody
