for 13 years, a walk through the streets of siouxland has brought together the community to honor a special group of people. "the march to honor lost children" recognizes native american children and other children tribal members say have been lost to foster care and adoption. there are three children who have been honored throughout the years who died under foster care. larissa star and hannah thomas died about 15 years ago.

and nathaniel saunsoci. the 20-month-old who died in 2006. he sustained severe head injuries while living in a a foster home in south sioux city. today, was a day of remembering those three children and others in the foster care and adoption system. ktiv's tiffany lane was at the war eagle monument this morning where marchers began their trek throughout sioux city. tiffany? sheila, it was a peaceful and prayerful march, with a goal...to reconnect foster and adopted children...and reconnect them with their families.

beginning and he says some children who aren't with their biological families will see this and hopefully reconnect with them. one family hoping to reconnect with theiriroved one through the march was delphine o'connor and her son michael. delphine says her granddaughter maria helena flores was taken into foster care nearly 20 years ago. she says during that time, an injury caused maria to become quadriplegic. "i would consider her lost as one of the lost children and in our family since we don't have that contact with her and d relate to that to a lot of our families out there right now," said michael o'connor, a member of the yankton sioux tribe. maria's story was just one of many shared by the marchers wednesday morning. su "organizers say this isn't only a day to remember those who are lost, but also for future generations." "there's still disproportionate numbers of our children in foster care," said lamere, organizer of the march to honor lost children. "disproportionate numbers of our children are bebeg adopted. and i thihi that we need to be vigilant, elevate the discussion." and for the marchers, spreading that message is just one step in their

"before initiatiti any procedure relating to the treatment of a patient, you must obtain the patient's informed consent to perform the procedure," said jeana goosmann, goosmann law firm. "meaningful informed consent is more than just obtaining a patient's signature on a piece of paper." what information does a physician need to give a patient? "physicians must provide patients with detailed information about risks, benefits, and alternatives including the optptn of doing nothing," goosmannnnaid. "then the patient should be allowed the opportunity to ask questions to the physician." what does the consent form address? "the majority of informed consent forms do not adequately address potential risks and benefits of procedures," goosmann said. "as a result they leave physicians and health care professionals vulnerable to liability claims." what should health care e ofessionals do to protect thememlves? do not rely upon a generic consent form,"

goosmann said. "be specific. use plain language that patients can understand and explain any medical terms. be detailed. include risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options. be upfront and honest. and, allow the patient time to weigh the risks and benefits before signing." can a consent form be handled by clerical staff? "it is not simply an intake form that should be handled by clerical staff," said goosmann.
