this morning we're learning more about the alleged gunman's unusual life as relatives of the victims speak out. >> he took my only brother from me. that's the only brother that i had. scary scene. a bus carrying college students back to school after the thanksgiving holiday overturns in virginia. at least 35 injured. that driver facing reckless driving charges this morning. and ready, set, click. americans expected to spend $3 billion on this cyber monday as amazon shows off what they hope will be the future of getting your packages quicker than ever, today, monday, november 30th, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning.
7:01 am
we got through thanksgiving, got through black friday. i may be too tired to click for cyber monday. >> so i should. have left my christmas list inside your office? >> i can't do it. i'm not able. >> i know. it's a big, big day. online sales are almost eclipsing regular bricks and mortar sales. >> $3 billion. more about that in a little while. let's start on a monday morning with our top story. president obama beginning this week in paris attending landmark conference on climate change. that city, of course, still on edge following those deadly terror attacks. nbc's kelly o'donnell is traveling with the president. kelly, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. security here is already very tight with emergency measures in place. just two weeks after the isis attacks here in paris. that is not what brought president obama to france, but it was the first thing on his mind. arriving very early this morning, just after midnight, president obama took advantage of the relative quiet and the empty streets of that early hour to make an unannounced stop at

the scene of the deadliest violence, the bataclan theater where he, the mayor of paris, and the president of france all already this morning the u.n. climate conference known at world leaders and they, too, began by pausing to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks and already today president obama has met with the president while they did talk about climate change, he also urged the chinese leader to do more in the fight against isis. matt, savannah? >> all right. kelly o'donnell in paris for us this morning. kelly, thank you. we're learning more this morning about the alleged gunman at friday's deadly shooting rampage at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado and learning more about his victims as well. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is in colorado springs for us. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: robert dear is being held here at county jail on no bond. he will face a judge for first

time from this facility later on today. this as we are learning more about the suspect in what some say are his anti-abortion beliefs which may have been his motive. he lived in deep isolation. robert dear's dilapidated trailer in the middle of nowhere, 65 miles away from the crime scene, even in the small town of hartsel few knew him. >> just looked like a mountain markings like a dude living off the grid. >> reporter: reportedly a college graduate, dear will previously lived in north carolina in a shack with no electricity, water, or sewage neighbors say he rarely spoke to anyone and had never been charged with a violent crime. >> he's coming out. he's got the ak. >> reporter: police say on friday dear unloaded a steady relentless volley of gunfire at a planned parenthood in colorado springs. the standoff lasted five hours. >> we're getting shot at again, shot at. >> reporter: nine were injured, three killed. >> 221, officer shot. >> reporter: police officer

garrett swasey, a former champion figure skater who trained with nancy kerrigan leaves behind his wife and two small children. >> he was willing to do whatever it took to lay down his wife. >> reporter: jennifer markovsky a mother of two was at planned parenthood with a friend, her father writing, life was too short, my beloved daughter. and ke'arre stewart, the father of two young girls, was there with a pregnant girlfriend with a child he'll never meet. >> he took away my only brother. the only brother i have and he took it away from me the it's hard but i forgive him. >> reporter: planned parenthood executives believe they were targeted because they offer abortion services. security stepped up at some clinics after so much bloodshed. >> it's a tragedy. it's a worldwide tragedy. >> reporter: detectives have not released a motive, but law

enforcement sources tell nbc news after the suspect was taken into custody, he rambled about president obama, politics, and abortion, saying, quote, no more baby parts. today's court proceeding is procedural, but the d.a. will have ten days to file criminal charges. matt and savannah? >> all right, miguel almaguer, thank you. >> that shooting is pushing the issues of planned parenthood and gun violence back into the forefront of the presidential race as republican front-runner donald trump faces fresh scrutiny over some of the controversial things he's been saying on the campaign trail. nbc's kristen welker has more on that. hi, kristen, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. that's right. the 2016 race is intensifying just as this debate surrounding planned parenthood is coming into sharper focus. while all of the democratic candidates responded to the shooting the night it happened condemning the violence and making it clear they stand by planned parenthood, many of the republican candidates waited under sunday to way in. for the gop it's more
7:06 am
is largely pro-life, so they chose their words carefully. gop candidates finally responding to the shootings of the planned parenthood facility in colorado springs. >> it's obviously a tragedy. nothing justifies this. >> reporter: condemning the attack but stopping short of agreeing with critics, including the executives at planned parenthood who say that fiery anti-abortion rhetoric contributed to this shooting. >> this is so typical of the left to immediately begin demonizing the messenger because they don't agree with the message. >> there is a tremendous group of people that think it's terrible. all of the videos that they've seen, with some of these people from planned parenthood, talking about it like you're selling parts to a car. >> reporter: meanwhile donald trump is also not backing down after repeatedly insisting he saw muslims celebrating in new jersey after 9/11. >> this didn't happen in new jersey. there were plenty of reports, and you're -- >> it did happen in new jersey. chuck, it did happen in new jersey i have hundreds of people that agree with me and by the way, you -- >> reporter: trump also under

fire for seeming to mock "new york times" reporter serge kovaleski who has a genital joint condition after kovaleski challenged trump's claims about 9/11. over the weekend trump again said he wasnocking the reporter. >> he's using what he's got to such a horrible degree. i think it's disgraceful, and i think the "new york times" frankly should give me an apology. >> reporter: "new york times" isn't apologizing, and trump's rivals aren't buying it. >> he's insulted other reporters, this one he absolutely mocked who was disabled. >> reporter: and some candidates are showing new strengths. ted cruz is now just two points behind trump in iowa and chris christie picked up a key endorsement from the influential "new hampshire union leader." meanwhile ben cacaon visited jordan this weekend aiming to boost his foreign policy credentials after a series of blunders, including referring to some syrian refugees as rabid dogs. on sunday carson said the refugees he met weren't offended. >> they understand here that
7:08 am
we're talking about the jihadist, the islamic terrorists. >> reporter: meanwhile today the trump campaign is canceling what was initially dubbed a news conference to announce the endorsement by about 100 black religious leaders after many announced they have no immediate plans to back him. trump will still meet privately with those leaders and then head back out on the campaign trail as will almost all of the other candidates. matt, savannah. >> all right, kristen welker. kristen, thank you very much. >> let's bring in mark halperin, managing editor of bloomberg politics. >> good morning. >> stop me if you've heard this, before, donald trump says something that makes his rivals howl, the media howl and his numbers only grow stronger or at least stay solid. why should this be any different? >> his supporters don't care about this. look, we're two months away from iowa, particularly in the iowa caucus states and in new hampshire where they vote in the
7:09 am
primary, they're getting serious about this, and the nominee is going to be donald trump or one of six other people who get hot at the end. and the way to get hot is to pass trump while trump's flaps start to weigh on the mind of voters. >> we hear the same thing over and over again. the other thing we hear over and over again is the establishment in the republican party is panicked over donald trump, and they are going to band together to derail his campaign. hasn't happened so far. what are their options? >> it won't happen. the establishment is worried about christmas and other things and recognize if it's donald trump versus the establishment, trump supporters will rally even hard around him. it's not about the establishment. i can tell you who the nominee is going to be, it's going to be trump or the person who gets hot. whoever gets hot, even ted cruz
7:10 am
who the establishment of the party doesn't like, if that's the hot person there will be a lot of rallying around that person. >> let's talk about who is hot and who is not. chris christie got a big boost this weekend by getting the endorsement of the "new hampshire union leader," incredible and maybe a life lock. >> in a crazy cycle where donald trump is the front-runner and all these unorthodox things happening. there's no dead man walking. anyone on the stage can be the nominee. chris christie proves it. a lot of people said no chance. not just his endorsement but other things happening with him. he's in this game because he could be the hot candidate. >> real, real quickly. the attack at the planned patient parenthood clinic in colorado. there's no proof that there was a motive on the part of the gunman that was related to any of the rhetoric we're hearing on the campaign trail, but does the attack take the issue of planned parenthood off the table for republican candidates who don't want to be seen or don't want to risk taking advantage of a tragedy or being on the wrong side of a tragedy. >> it certainly makes it harder to talk about in political terms. look. planned parenthood, gun violence, isis, there's so many big serious issues in a presidential campaign that's been like a circus.
7:11 am
now we have to see how candidates finesse talking about serious things, even in the context of this race. >> we're going to hold you accountable. you'll be here with us dozens of times between now and the conventions. let's say we're driving in the car, the candidates are. which candidate is moving forward and which is stuck in neutral and which canned skate in full reverse? >> two going farthest fastest ted cruz, senator from texas and chris christie. the ones going forward. jeb bush is stalled. he's in neutral. he's not going back. and donald trump, i think, right now is in neutral but headed uphill. >> and who is going backwards? >> backwards right now i think is ben carson. he's the one who has got to figure out a way to get a little bit more gas in the tank beyond what he's already done. >> mark, i think we've stretched this met for met for metaphor as far as humanly possible. classes cancelled today at university of chicago because of an online threat of gun violence. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good morning. the university says it's responding to some information provided by the fbi that
7:12 am
somebody posted a threat of a shooting attack this morning. that threat was said to come from an unknown person mentioning what the anonymous posting called the campus quad at 10:00 a.m. in response the university canceled all classes and other activities at the hyde park campus for the entire day, and it also urged students who live in campus housing to stay indoors for the day. a public letter from the university of chicago's president robert zimmer says he acted, quote, based on the fbi's assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country. the university says a visible police presence will be on and around the campus today. the fbi is investigating the source of the online posting, and this morning a law enforcement official says concern is decreasing as agents get a better idea of where this came from. threats like this are a challenge to school officials because they are hard to ignore, hard to ignore something this specific, even though it's very rare for such an act of violence to be preceded by an actual threat. matt? >> pete williams on this story, pete, thank you. now to virginia where a bus
7:13 am
heading back to school after the holiday breakover turned. natalie is following this story. good morning, natalie. >> good morning. three dozen passengers on that bus suffered injuries and first responders say it's a miracle only one of them is considered serious. a scary scene as a charter bus full of college students overturned in westchester county, virginia, overnight. at 1:50 p.m. the bus was traveling south on the poe white parkway when it approached a ramp as reportedly high speed, the driver losing control as the bus flipped on its side. a passing car then hit the overturned bus leaving students in a panic. >> all the students are just saying the bus driver was driving very, very fast. they had to climb out of the bus. there was a lot of dirt all over her. she said she couldn't move her right arm. she thought she had broken it. they think she may have broken her wrist. >> the passengers were all students returning to virginia tech, radford university, and
7:14 am
the university of virginia after the holiday weekend. approximately 34 of the bus's 50 passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. one passenger's injuries are being described as serious. >> we decided to call this a mass casualty incident due to the amount of resources that we had to use, and doing that we open up all the area hospitals to be able to kind of dice purse the patients evenly. >> and virginia state police are still investigating the crash. the driver of the bus has been charged with reckless driving. guys? >> natalie, thank you very much. weather doesn't appear to be a factor in that crash. in other areas across the country, though, snow, flooding rains, ice made it forfor a very difficult holiday weekend. al, are they over those storms? >> not even close and we've got at least as we look at maps 12 million people under some sort of winter weather advisory or winter storm warning stretching from oklahoma all the way into wisconsin. we're going to be watching this.
