after a mild monday,we'll see very similar temperatures today with a bit more cloud cover overhead which could squeeze out a few sprinkles if not an isolated shower. highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s will be the new norm this week with a good mixture of clouds and sunshine with some stronger winds expected on thursday. temperatures will cool back down to the upper 30s and lower 40s over the weekend with cloudier skies. models are still in some disagreement, but a couple snow showers do appear to be possible saturday night and sunday, so we'll see how those chances play out in the coming days. see graphics. wx timer @ :40 >> sioux city police say a woman was held at gunpoint, and her son beaten, when burglars broke into their home early yesterday morning. ktiv's tiffany lane talked with the neighbor who called police after the terrifying incident.

a-m. the victims told sioux city police the suspects asked for drugs and money. police say the victims believe they had the wrong house. one of blackwell's sons sought out help from the next door neighbor after the police say they are searching for multiple suspects. but, they haven't offered any specifics on the suspects since it is an open case. a fire broke out in morningside apartment complex, last night. two of the apartment units were damaged by the fire. the cause of the fire was unattended cooking. the building was quickly evacuated and nobody was hurt.

into the building last night. the inspectors are expected to check the building today to see if first and second floor residents can return to their apartments. but the third floor will be closed for an extended period of time. a south sioux city, nebraska, man faces robbery charges after police say he kicked down the door to a sioux city residence. 20-year-old arturo silvas is charged with 1st degree robbery after police say he entered a home on west 2nd street. authorities say he kicked in the door and threated a man with a handgun. police say silvas left the home arrived. he was located a short time taken into custody. he is currently in the woodbury bond. a judge has sentenced a storm lake, iowa man to five years probation for having explosive devices in a home that's across the street from a preschool. the sentence came after 28-year-old dion caldwell pleaded guilty to possession of an explosive or incendiary device with intent to public offense.

prison sentence, which a judge suspended in favor of probation. back in march, storm lake police responded to reports of a fight and arrested three people in relation to the altercation. caldwell was arrested after police found several homemade explosive devices, plus the materials to make more inside the home. the devices were described as metallic cylinders with gun powder inside and a detonator cord. the police chief said had one exploded, it could have caused damage up to 100 feet away. it's been three years since hunters found two little bodies. three years and still no one has been charged with the murders of lyric cook and elizabeth collins. they were riding their bikes when they were abducted in evansdale. nearly five months after they went missing, hunters found their bodies at seven bridges wildlife area in bremer county, iowa. investigators continue to believe that area is a major part in this case. family believe the girere killed the same day they were abducted.

girls were killed. police have arrested a lake allegedly made threats against an area business. 28-year-old daniel wingert was arrested after the spirit lake police department received a call on sunday about those police searched wingert's home in lake he was booked into the dickinson county jail and was charged with a threat of terrorism. a federal appeals court has ruled that six people wrongly convicted in a 1985 slaying of a woman in southeast nebraska should have a chance to argue that the officials who prosecuted them acted improperly. today's ruling from the 8th u.s. circuit court of appeals revived the group's complaint against gage county and the officials who built the case against the six in the 1985 killing of helen wilson in beatrice. the initial trial in the lawsuit ended in mistrial in january. the wrongly convicted individuals -- known as the beatrice six -- served a combined 77 years in prison before dna testing

if you live in sioux city, you may see your trash rates increase at the the start of the new year. yesterday, the city council voted to increase the rates. currently, residents pay $15.44 a month. but, if approved at a meeting in early january, there will be an 86-cent hike. so, you'll end up paying $16.30 a month for trash collection. that amounts to about 10- dollars more you'll pay next year. "if we would have raised them 2% a year, we wouldn't still be where we're at," said sioux city mayor bob scott. "so, those citizens got a break for a little while. number two, i don't want to bid this contract right now, because i'm afraid the rates will be much higher than what than what these are proposed to be." that rate will stay the same for a minimum of three years. the san bernardino community continues to mourn the lives lost during last week's terrorist mass shooting. a candle light vigil was held at the government center there last night.

for each one of the victims. fourteen people were killed and and more than 20 wounded when the husband and wife team went to farook's job and opened fire. the couple was later killed in a shoot out with police. oregon families packed up their homes after evacuation orders were issued monday, as heavy rains flooded homes across the state. record rainfall overflowed rivers and creeks in milwaukie, oregon. the national weather service issued a flood watch for most of northwest oregon and southwest washington through wednesday afternoon. the storm has washed out homes and left many families searching for a new place to stay, while they wait for things to dry out. hoping to compete with neighboring cities, the sioux city city council approved an "enhancement study" for the tyson events center. consultants will look at improving concession stands, increasing premium level seating and possibly widening a number of concourse areas. the sioux city events & facilities executive director

"stick back as much money as we can into our community and i hope that it gets returned in the process. everything i've tried to do here all the labor that we've had to do the piping, electricity i've done local and i've always tried to do local stuff," said aqua shrimp farmer, dalton van zanten. and when asked what the biggest thing he learned was... it's concerning the transportatio n security administration 's efforts to protect threats to the homeland that involve aviation. the t-s-a's deputy assistant administrator is scheduled to testify. the department of justice is investigating chicago's police department. attorney general loretta lynch says the federal probe will have engaged in a pattern or practice of violating residents' civil rights. the investigation comes at the request of a number of state, local, and community leaders.. and after a preliminary review. "specifically, we will examine a number of issues related to the chicago police department's use of force, including its use of deadly force, racial, ethnic and other disparities in its use of force, and its accountability mechanisms. such as its disciplinary actions and its handling of allegations of misconduct," says loretta lynch, u.s. attorney general. the inquiry will be broader than the federal investigation already underway into the deadly police shooting of laquan

"we've been talking about it for a long time," said matt salvatore, sioux city parks and recreation director. "for the most part, people seem to be okay with the plan. it's not ideal, but we're moving forward. and we're going to provide a recommendation one way or the other." the pool committee will present the recommendations to the parks and recreation advisory committee. that will be tomorrow afternoon at four. it will be at the long lines family rec center third floor conference room. the meeting is open to the public. the outcome

while one nebraska couple's christmas display continues to grow, so does siouxland's holiday spirit. gene watchorn and julie mcdowell of ponca have been decking their halls with christmas spirit for more than 30 years. but over the last 10 years, the array of decorations has grown to what it is today. to date, the christmas collection includes more than 100 inflatables, 17 full-size christmas trees and several hundred nutcrackers and animations. more than a thousand people visited the home last year and the couple says they expect even more visitors this holiday season. "it's spectacular," said first time visitor, diane hoyt. "you wouldn't believe that a display this beautiful would be sitting out here in out-state nebraska, or the people who put that much time and energy and love into providing a display that everyone can enjoy." for some who live in the area, visiting the holiday

"you wouldn't believe that a display this beautiful would be sitting out here in out-state nebraska, or the pele who put that much time and energy and love into providing a display that everyone can enjoy." for soso who live in the area, visiting the holiday display has become tradition. brooke kneifl, who lives in ponca, saw the display for the first time with her grandmother when she was in 4th grade. "it's so lit up every year," said brooke kneifl.
