around three a-m monday morning, a sioux city family had an unexpected and unforgettabl e experience. two masked suspects made their way into their locked home at 26-27 south alice street while the family was asleep, police say. su sioux city police say the twl men kicked in the door and you can see one of the footprints remaining here and they entered the house with a handgun and a crowbar. the suspects tied up, and hit the 19-year-old son with a crowbar, and held his mom at gunpoint. according to the womana when she would try to stop them from hitting her son they would pull the gun on r, keeping her from tryjng to protest her son. "once tied up, the suspects continued to kick and hit the victim wh a crowbar," said det. nick thompson of the sioux city police department. "the men threatened to shoot the residents of the home and demanded money." the mother who still comes to tears when describibi the traumatic incident, said that her son received blows to the head as well as a gash in his back from the beating. her 13-year-old son was also in the home at the

harmed, according to police. during the armed robbery, the suspects stole multiple gaming systems, a television and a cell phone. "the suspects did take the cell phone that belonged to the mother, preventing her from calling 9-1-1," "once the suspects left, the younger son did leave to a neighbor's house to phone for help." the teen wenenaround the back of t t home for safety, according to his mother and made his way to the neighbor's where police were finally called.>> i spoke with the 19 year- old victim who was treated at mercy medical center yesterday. he says that he has experienced more mental injuries than anything from the devastating experience. but he s ss overall, they are e doing okay at the moment. police described one of the men as tall and thin, and around six feet tall. the other suspect is male, with a thin build, between five foot eight and five feet 11 inches. police were unable to release any additional detatas about the suspectsts.

three years of probation and a suspended fifi-year prison ntence in the case. the yankton school district is making changes to its security protocols and systems after two men were arrested last week for entering the high school. the district today told parents the front entrances of the schools will now remain locked. a camera and buzzer were installed at yankton high school, and now people may only go inside the building i ia staff member authorizes it. the same system will be installed at the elementary and middle schools. the changes come after 18-year-old joseph vanbuskirk and 19-year- old adam gerard, who are university of south dakota students, entered the high school. police say the men didn't have permission to enter the school. they are facing various charges including trespassing and possession of firearms on school grounds. a fire forced people from m eir homes at a morningside apartment complex last night. firefighters responded to the call at 22-01 gibson street just before 10 o'clock. when crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the three story building. officials say food left unattended on the stove in a

the fire, which then spread to the attic. smoke and flames damaged 2 units and forcededbout 20 people from their homes. south dakota governor dennis daugaard is outlining his key priorities for the 2016 legislative session. the governor's budget address is scheduled for today in pierre. daugaard says he plans to discuss issues including paying off debt and a task force that examined education and how to raise teacher pay. woodbury county y pervisors are diussing what can be done to expand the law enforcement center and close prairie hills jail. an engineer has determined that the law enforcement center can support an addition that would allow extra space where beds could be added. the next step would be to hire a consultant to figure out how to create the addition and how to get everyying up to code. ktiv's robert lowe is at the woodbubu county supervisors s meeting tonight and will bring up more on news 4 at ten. another nice day if siouxland. chief meteorologis t ron demers has more

spread some holiday cheer. ktiv's sarah te slaa and ben dorenbach sang christmas carols and handed out gifts. special thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with part of our morning crew for the third year, norfolk will be hosting the nebraska school activities association one-act ay production champipiships. over 1,000 students from all over nebraska will be competing in the championships which start tomorrow at the johnny carson theatre. the norfolk area sports council sports development manager says they've learned a lot over the years hosting the championships . "when those schools walk into the johnny carson theatre, they're awestruck if they haven't seen it before and they're starstruck. the theatre stage is huge is for them, norfolk area sports council sports development manager mike fuehrer said." it's not easy to host the thousands of people that are expected to compete in and attend the championships. organizers say the community has been quick to assist in any way they can. the state one-act championships will begin on wednesday and continue through friday. today is national b bwnie day!

"we're always looking for drivers. you have to remembers as i said a lot of these people are shut-ins. if you were to deliver, you might be the only person they see in the outside world all day long and they really appreciate having meals delivered to them," said connections area agency on aging meals on wheels volunteer recruiter and healthy legs instructor, stan wisnieski. volunteers say it's worth the drive just to see the elderlys' faces light up when they get that meal. if you would like to volunteer, visit ktiv.com and therre will be a link inside this story. officials are trying to determine the species of a large canine shot in northwest iowa. the iowa department of natural resources says it is teing the animal's dna following a shooting sunday morning in osceola county. a hunter looking for coyote used a common technique to shoot the animal from about 100 to 150 yards away. the hunter determined the animal was not a coyote and contacted a local state conservation officer. officials think the animal could be a wolf. more. it's not every day you get to see a big-time division 1 basketball recruit in siouxland. but fans here in cherokee will get a treat tonight -- even if it's two players on the visiting team. ryan kriener averaged over 19 points and 8 rebounun as a junior. so far as a senior, he's averaging 22 and a half points per game in spirit lake's first two games. the indians are 1 and 1 -- beating sioux central -- then losing to cedar rapids kennedy. kriener shot 71 percent from the field last season and signed with the hawkeyes last month. spirit lake beat cherokee by 50 points last season. kriener isn't spirit lake's only division one recruit. guard billy brown has signed to play at north dakota next season. cherokee comes into tonight's game with an 0 and 1 record. also, the girls teams are both ranked in class 3a and they're playing right now. we'll have the highlights on sports fource extra at ten. live in cherokee, sam curtiss
