president barack obama has signed a measure replacing the landmark no child left behind education law of 2002. president obama calls the new law a "christmas miracle." he's praising republicans and democrats for coming together to change the way teachers are evaluated and underperforming schools are pushed to improve. president obama says the old law had the right goals, but fell short in practiti. the new law gives more decision-making power to the states. protesters are back on the streets of chicago several medical students staged a "die- in" on the sidewalk near daley plaza this morning. they lay on the ground for 16 minutes to represent the number of times a white police officer fatally shot a black teenager. the latest protest comes a day afr mayor rahm emanuel gave a speech to aldermen apologizing in the wake of recent video footage showing the fatal shooting. some protesters are calling for his resignation. more protests are planned for today.

on this month's planned trip to israel. the republican presidential candidate tweeted today that he'll reschedule, quote---"at a later date after i become president of the u.s." trump has come under fire worldwide after proposing that muslims not be allowed into the united states. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu faced calls to cancel the visit. trump saysyse didn't want to put netanyahu "under pressure." trump has come under fire for his comments about muslims, even from fellow republicans. the scrutiny has raised questions of whether he would run as an independent candidate for president. he addressed that on cnn. the state department on this latest north korea nuclear claim. but it's being viewed with suspicion by many experts, just rhetoric some say. keir simmons/ nbc news/ london, england "the aim perhaps to send a message the country will not abandon it's nuclear weapons and to force the international community to recognize north korea's nuclear status, something washington of course says it will never do. back to you." >> the governor of massachusetts says a passenger train that left a suburban boston station without a driver this morning was tampered with. the six-car train with 50 people aboard left the braintree station this morning and traveled through four other stations without stopping before power was cut off to stop the train. no passengers were hurt. governor charlie baker told boston herald radio that someone "who knew what they were doing" tampered with the train. the u-s navy's newest combat ship is under fire over its name. the new ship was commissioned last weekend as the "u-s-s jackson."

but that city is named after former president andrew jackson, and that's where the controversy comes in. his legacy is facing new scrutiny, especially his questionable treatment of slave owner. civil rights activists are change the ship's name. the u-s-s jackson is the same type of littoral combat ship as t "uss sioux city" currently under construction in wisconsin. a very non- traditional nativity controversy in one ohio neighborhood will stay put, after some downsizing. it depicts the holy family, including baby jesus, as blood-thirsty zombies. scott wegener has the story.

(kathy thomas) "they didn't do it to harm-to make any gestures about anybody's religion." the township received several profane emails telling them to stop interfering with the display. one of the few we could put on tv; "i hope you guys get coal." this is what the display looked like before. project called the "seedslide." it's a device that enables a farm to load grain into a wagon by remoted control. it's touted as safer and more efficient. doering is one of 24 students from across the country to compete after putting his entry on youtube. he also got to pitch his product to shark tank cast member daymond john. "while the five-thousand dollars is nice," "i think that's one of the lower things i actually took away from this experience. the networks, the connections i made there was really, really nice of just people who want to help me succeed." doering's startup company was launched in april. doering grew up on a farm. his dad is a seed dealer. he says he designed seed-slide so that his dad and granpa don't have to be climbing around on wagons.

the buick "envision" next year. it's a crossover s- u-v that was designed in the u-s, but built completely in china. g-m cars are very popular in china. in fact, g-m sells more vehicles there than in the u-s. but critics are blasting g-m for the move, suggesting that cheaper chinese labor could lead to fewer u-s jobs. the united auto workers union is calling on g-m to reconsider its plans and build the envision at a u-s plant. an artist in tucson, arizona is using an unconventional way to put your imagination on fabric. he uses his sewing.. machine to draw. domen-ica fuller shows us.
