good morning. thanks for joining us on this tuesday, december 15th. coming up in this half hour of news 4 today more on the school threat in northwest iowa. police have arrested a siouxland student after allegedly making a threat against sheldon high school. details in just a minute. also... not something you think of this time of year... flooding, but after the recent rainfall, some siouxland residents are cleaning up and drying out after rivers and creeks swell with rainwater. and forget the red suit with fur trim and the black belt. santa in toronto has a new look this year... he's trimmed down and very fashion forward. we'll meet the fashionista santa is just a bit. but first, here's ben.

following saturdays arrest, students were able to return to sheldon high school with their backpacks in hand monday morning. there was an extra police officer at the school. but superintenden t robin spears says that was optional after the potential threat was found to be not viable. kourtney dagel's kids go to the elementary school a couple hundred yards from where the threat was made. she kept them home monday as a precaution. "just because i'm not comfortable with how the informing parents," said superintendent says it only didn't want to risk it. "i felt that as a parent, us parents are our kids' voice," said kourtney dagel. "we speak for their children. nobody really knows who this kid is." as for who made the threat, spears says it was a student that later was arrested on saturday. adding it was something written in a bathroom at the school but would not say what. sunday, the

this email updating many on the situation outlining the threat no longer exists. the school even had a christmas concert in the auditorium that day. spears says that student acted alone and the school is now following its safety procedures. in sheldon, iowa, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. >> there is no word if the student will be expelled or charged with anything. ktiv also put in calls to the sheldon police department. they have not been returned at this time. in the wake of the san bernardino mass shooting, california congressman mike thompson hosted a gun violence prevention conference at the state capitol yesterday. congressman thompson -- who prevention task force -- wants to ban guns for anyone on the some want to go farther, such as police to carry a concealed weapon. but some gun owners are calling for just the opposite, allowing everyone the right. california has some of the toughest gun control laws anywhere. efforts to expand background checks nationally remain highly politicized - and currently stalled in congress. a jury in baltimore is

connection with the death of freddie gray. attorneys made their closing arguments yesterday in the trial of officer william porter. porter is the first of six baltimore police officers to go on trial in connection to gray's death. gray sustained a spinal cord injury while he was being transported in a police van. prosecutors say porter ignored a department policy requiring officers to buckle prisoners in seat belts and didn't call for an ambulance when gray asked for medical help. porter testified gray didn't show signs of injury and he told his commanding officers about gray's medical request. the sentencing of a northeast iowa teenager charged in the traffic deaths of two siouxland girls last year--has been pushed back. 18-year-old trevor feauto of clarksville was supposed to be sentenced yesterday. he pleaded gulity last month to two counts of felony vehicular homicide. prosecutors say feauto was driving drunk in august of last year when his pickup truck crashed into a car near breda, iowa. bailey jacobsen and lindsey quirk, both 16 and both of wall lake, iowa, were

the judge says he has some things to take into consideration before sentencing. it's now set for january 19th at the sac county courthouse. two missing storm lake, iowa children have been located and their father and grandmother have been arrested in their disappearance . 3-year old ymani banks and one-year-old yamir banks were found safe last night. 32-year-old scott banks and 50-year-old dionne pamon both face kidnapping charges. they're accused of hiding the children from officials with the department of human services. an iowa high school is planning to close a school nursery next year because fewer teenage girls are getting pregnant. in 2001 there were 97 teens who had babies in muscatine county. that has decreased to just 40 last year in 2014. and right now, the cribs inside the nursery at muscatine high school are all empty. "we're down to one baby and that mother will be graduating at the end of the school year and we only have three teenagers who are pregnant currently in our high school," said broderson. "so, we're very happy to be able to

officials say in years past muscatine had the highest number of teen parents in the state. broderson said it's proof that prevention programs and education work. the nursery will close permanently by the end of the school year. broderson said closing the nursery will also free up at-risk state funding for the school district to use in other areas. both sioux city hospitals recently released the most popular baby names for 2015. at unitypoint health-st. luke's saw a mix of traditional and modern names. evelyn was the top girl's name in 2015 beating out mia from last year. other popular girls' names included zoey, mia, emma, sophia, in the boys' department, jackson took the top spot with various spelling of the name. other popular names included liam, noah, henry, hudson,

names in 2014, missed the cut this year, meanwhile, over at mercy medical center, mia and carson topped their list. among the list of other most chosen names for newborn boys were easton, noah, landon and lucas. other favorite names for newborn girls were ava, lillian, amelia and violet. among the more original names for boys were axel, holden, jett and gideon. a new owner is about to transform an old shopping center in sioux city. the boys and girls home bought the indian hills shopping center for almost $2 million dollars. next spring they plan to reveal what they have planned for the site that includes eight and half acres. sioux city mayor bob scott spoke on the acquisition after this evening's city council meeting. "i know art, and i was going to try and call him and see if there's anything the city can do, and see what's going on, but i've not been able...today was just a really busy day, we had a lotf

(natsound/new year celebrations) financial experts have another reason to celebrate the upcoming new year... a survey finds more americans...now willing to make resolutions related to their financial health. (sot/ ken hevert / fidelity investments :12 - :16 ) "i think the overall theme here is that people are feeling a little more optimistic going into next year." ken hevert's with fidelity investments... who sponsored the study... that found the most popular financial resolutions include paying off debt... spending less... and definitely saving more. (sot/ ken hevert / fidelity investments :30 - :28 ) "even if i was to increase my annual savings by 1% ultimately that's going to get me a lot closer to building up the nestegg you want in retirement." seeing how many americans will likely be facing higher health insurance costs in 2016, he says to keep in mind... that better health and fitness can reduce health care expenses. and just like resolutions to be healthier, make sure you tell someone about your financial resolutions. plus, calhoun, crawford, carroll and sac counties all under a flood warning until 10:45 this morning. early morning rainstorms left some siouxlanders with severe flooding. ktiv's tommie clark visited towns in sac county yesterday that are dealing with the flood waters.

and said they've never had flooding like this. and now, she has some advice for other homeowners in the same situation... "get flood insurance. make sure you have maybe sand bags if you know the rain's coming. use youre best judgement honestly," said early, ia homeowner, melissa dean. for now, the deans are working on sealing their basement and adding a new coat of waterproof paint. "the rain has let up for now and we'll see what comes of the flooding. in sac city, iowa...tommie clark...ktiv news 4." >> and, high water was an issue for the boyer river in the crawford county community of denison, iowa yesterday. the farmland foods pork plant actually had to send workers home because of

good news though, the river started to go back down yesterday afternoon. about 6 inches of rain fell in the area. the town of luther in boone county was a mess. basements are flooded and the city park is under water. city hall has also taken on water. crews tried to pump water out... but it's hard to keep up when it keeps raining. and with that rain, it's important to stay safe on the roads. authorities alway says don't drive through water that's over the roadway. your car can be swept away if there's 12 inches of water on the roads. and, if you're using cruise control, disengage it and drive manually if you're around any water. "if the road is wet, take caution. the roads are the most dangerous right after it rains because the water has not had a chance to wash away the oils or anything so the roads are most slick after it rains so just slow down," said sioux city police officer, brent heald. officer heald says they have not seen

russia over a political transition to end syria's civil war. he is due to meet with russian president vladimir putin and foreign minister. this is kerry's second trip to russia this year - but his first since frosty relations over ukraine were exacerbated by moscow's intervention in syria in late september. some people at the university of iowa are calling for a name change to their online student information system. put the name iowa in front of the words.... student information system and the acronym is "isis". the system has been called isis for many years but in light of world events some want it changed... so the school hopes to have a new name officially in place by spring. however, at least one student thinks most people wouldn't think of terrorism when they log on. "i mean i feel like it's pretty obvious that the university of iowa is not standing with isis, the terror organization but i guess if you know we don't want to seem affiliated with it, if that's the case," said iowa university student, heidi aude. a university spokesperson said

seriously considering the acronym change. terry branstad is now the longest serving governor in u.s. history. politicians and supporters came together last night to celebrate his time in office. on hand, a number of friends, family and fellow politicans celebrating branstad surpassing former new york governor george clinton, who first took office back in 1777. but, this service record now belongs to branstad. ktiv's robert lowe was in the iowa state capitol in des moines and has the story.

roots that resonate with iowans from sioux city to dubuque. with an overall election record of 19-0, making history isn't new to the head of the hawkeye state. only 35 years old at the time, branstad won his first gubernatorial race in 1982, becoming the youngest serving governor in state history. more than 33 years later, 21 spent working in the office of the governor, branstad says there's more work to be done "we'll continue to bring more good jobs to iowa and diversyfying the economy", said gov. branstad." i'm honored and proud to be selected by the people to have this super responsiblity to serve as their chief executive," said gov. branstad. and everyday at work, means another day in the history books. proving iowa really is a field of dreams. >> the proceeds raised from last night's event will go toward promoting and preserving iowa's history. a sioux city firm has been awarded the contract to repair an endangered fish habitat on the missouri river in northeast nebraska. western contracting corporation will do the work in a backwater area near ponca state park. the area provides space for the endangered pallid sturgeon to feed and spawn. it was damaged in the massive 2011 missouri river flood. the pallid sturgeon is considered "critically endangered" because only a small population remains in the wild. western contracting will be paid one and 3- quarter million

a student linked to a threat made against sheldon high school last friday has been arrested. superintendent robin spears says something written inside a bathroom of the school. he didn't say what was written, but it prompted officials to tell students not to bring backpacks to school on monday. following the arrest, students were allowed and did have backpacks in class. the name of the student who was arrested has not been released. heavy rains prompted flooding warnings in several parts of iowa yesterday. all of sac county was under a warning with the north raccoon river overflowing into parks, streets, and backyards. one homeowner in early tells us she woke up to find three inches of water in her basement. in denison, where more than four inches of rain fell, the boyer river almost went out of its banks. the farmland foods pork plant sent workers home because of the flood threat. but by afternoon, the river level was going back down. and iowa governor terry branstad celebrates his record achievement. on monday, he became the

of officer william porter. porter is the first of six baltimore police officers to go on trial in connection to gray's death. gray sustained a spinal cord injury while he was being transported in a police van. prosecutors say porter ignored a department policy requiring officers to buckle prisoners in seat belts and didn't call for an ambulance when gray asked for medical help. porter testified gray didn't show signs of injury and he told his commanding officers about gray's medical request. the sentencing of a northeast iowa teenager charged in the traffic deaths of two siouxland girls last year--has been pushed back. 18-year-old trevor feauto of clarksville was supposed to be sentenced yesterday. he pleaded gulity last month to two counts of felony vehicular homicide. prosecutors say feauto was driving drunk in august of last year when his pickup truck crashed into a car near breda, iowa. 16 year olds bailey jacobsen and lindsey quirk, both from wall lake, iowa, were killed in the crash. the judge says he has some things to take into consideration before sentencing.

the sac county courthouse. two missing storm lake, iowa children have been located and their father and grandmother have been arrested in their disappearance . 3-year old ymani banks and one-year-old yamir banks were found safe last night. 32-year-old scott banks and 50-year-old dionne pamon both face kidnapping charges. they're accused of hiding the children from officials with the department of human services. both sioux city hospitals recently released the most popular baby names for 2015. unitypoint health-st. luke's saw a mix of traditional and modern names. evelyn was the top girl's name in 2015 beating out mia from last year. other popular girls' names included zoey, mia, emma, sophia. in the boys' department, jackson took the top spot with various spelling of the name. other popular names included liam, noah, henry, hudson, carter, which was

an, unusual sight this time of year, parts of siouxland under flood warnings this morning. that includes the little sioux river and the communities of spencer and linn grove, iowa. plus, calhoun, crawford, carroll and sac counties all under a flood warning until 10:45 this morning. rainstorms left some siouxlanders with severe flooding. ktiv's tommie clark visited towns in sac county that are dealing with the flood waters.

entire basement flooded. at it's peak, her basement was filled with 3 inches of water. "i had to take today off of work, which as a teacher is not something you can normally do. i had to ask for a personal day. my poor kids are missing out on the project we were going to do for christmas. so it's really impacted my life, not just my day," said early, ia homeowner melissa dean. dean and her family have lived in early for five years and said they've never had flooding like this. and now, she has some advice for other homeowners in the same situation... "get flood insurance. make sure you have maybe sand bags if you know the rain's coming. use youre best judgement honestly," said early, ia homeowner, melissa dean. for now, the deans are working on sealing their basement and adding a new coat of waterproof paint. and, high water was an issue for the boyer river in the crawford county community of denison, iowa yesterday. the farmland foods pork plant actually had to send workers home because of the flood threat. good news though, the river started to go back down by the afternoon. more than four inches of rain fell in denison. the town of luther in boone county was a mess. basements are flooded.. and so is the city park. city hall has also taken on water. crews are trying to pump the water out... but it's hard to keep up when it keeps raining. it's . time for a break. we're back with our fourth half hour of news 4 today. first though.. here's a look at some of the events on the ktiv-dot-com community calendar.

the farmland foods pork plant sent workers home because of the flood threat. but by afternoon, the river level was going back down. and iowa governor terry branstad celebrates his record achievement. on monday, he became the longest- serving governor in u-s history. he's been in office 7,642 days. that's just under 21 years, stretched over two tenures. when branstad was first elected governor in 1982, he was iowa's youngest governor at age 36. more than one-thousand people joined a celebration last night at the iowa state fairgrounds.
