thursday, december 17th. coming up in this half hour of news 4 today... four kids are in custody after a threat puts a northeast nebraska school on lockdown. authorities in madisis county locked down newman grove high school yesterday after a threat was received on social media. we've got the latest coming up. also after reports of misconduct and misuse of force, the department of justice begins its investigation into the chicago police department. more from the windy city in just a minute. and one siouxland woman has a unique christmas collection. her home is filled with one-of-a-kind nutcrackers, nativity scenes, and special santas. we'll check out her holiday decore a little later. but first, here's ben.

"it started about 12:10, when school administrator s were made aware of a facebook post that was posted at about 10am. in that post, unspecified threats were made against the school building and the people inside. school officials immediately contacted newman grove police

county sheriff officials. "the threat was one of the nature of violence to the school and its students," said madison county sheriff, vern hjorth. "so, consequently, the school was shut down." now, madison county has what's called a cirt team - critical incident response team. they immediately made their way to newman grove, surrounded the school and began investigating exactly what happened. a short time after their arrival, they took four students into custody, all juveniles, and transported them to the juvenile detention center in madison, which is about 15 miles away. as for the rest of the day, they spent a little time after that sweeping the school just to see if anything was left behind or if anybody e ee was involved, and by 2:30, i iwas business as usuaua "we are very lucky to have officers in and around o community to help us deal with these types of situations," said newman grove superintendent, mikel shalikow. now parents were alerted that the school had been placed on lockdown. school officials say they'd like to call everybody and let them know exactly what happened, but things are moving so quickly. the good news is, at the end of the day, all of the kids, the parents, the teachers went home safely. four

the madison county attorney will now decide what charges the teens face and if they will be tried as adults. the man arrested for setting fire to a california mosqsq last friday was arraigned yesterday. 23-year-old carl james dial junior faces a felony count of arson and burglary and a misdemeanor count of committing a hate crime. he was identified by investigators as the primary suspect in the coachella mosque fire. the mosque suffered considerable damage to it's entrance and smoke damage roughout. dial plead not guilty to all three charges. if convicted, he could face up to 11 years and four months in prison. his next court appearance is set for december 28-th. the comptoir voltaire cafe in paris has reopened more than one month after the terrorist attacks hit the city.

on november 13- th, when a suicide bomber blew himself up on the terrace of the cafe. several people were injured. thehe shattered windows have been replaced and the owners have added a french flag to the christmas decorations. a few feet from the entrance of the cafe, flowers are still on the ground as a tribute for the victims of the attacks. protesters marched in downtown baltimore after a mistrial was declared in the trial of a police officer charged in the death of freddie gray. they shout "no justice no peace" outside the baltimore court house. after the jury said it could not reach a unanimous decision on any of the four charges against william portrt. the judge thanked d e jury for their service and dismissed them. porter is charged with manslaughter, second degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. porter will be retried by a new jury. five other officers also face various charged and will be tried separately . the u-s department of justice

awarded. a sheriff's deputy in madison county, nebraska is being called a hero after his brave actions were caught on video. two week ago, 911 dispatchers received a call about a reckless semi driver on highway 81 at the platte county line. deputies caught up with the tractor trailer near madison using their lights and sirens when they became concerned because the truck wouldn't stop. madison county deputy todd volk was working that day and knew something didn't sound right. he says the driver just had a blank stare on his face. the semi then barreled towards norfolk. so, at that point, deputy volk knew something needed to be done. "as he came by, i could see the driver's head slumped down and felt he was not conscious. at that point in time, the truck was traveling about 20 mph, i jumped back in my patrol vehicle, punched it and got up in front and jumped out and jumped up and grabbed the hand railing and the mirror on the side of the truck and hit the

many people have their own hobbies, passions, or collections. for one sioux city woman, hers is christmas. and her niche is nutcrackers. ktiv's sam curtiss reports on a collection that has grown over the years.

said jacque goettsch. "it was on a family christmas. i got one from one sister, one from another sister and one from niece and when i opened them they said 'oh i didn't know you got the same one'." she has all different types including this on made by h h dad. around the rest of her home, 53 nativity displays. and one room dedicated to the jolly red man. "christmas is my hobby," said jacque goettsch. goettsch says it takes her about a week and a half to set up the decorations. "each one i have to dust off and look at and remember who gave it to me," said jacque g gttsch. "there's a lot of memeries down here for me." but goettsch's collection isn't quite complete. the retired nurse needs just one more to be satisfied. "i do not have a nurse nutcracker," said jacque goettsch. come the first week of january her prized set will be still be on display. only inside boxes stacked in the garage. "it's priceless to me only," said jacque goettsch. "there's other people that think i'm really nu about nutcrackers and they aren't so it's not improtant to other people but it's important for me."

auditorium full of staffers. this visit comes in the wake of the deadly shootings in paris and san bernardino and increased public concern aboututerrorist attacks and the threat of isis. u-s defense secretary ash carter said yesterday the u-s is "willing to do more" in the fight against isis. there are growing signs of the u-s seeking to step up its military campaign against terrorists. the fall of ramadi to isis was the biggest defeat of iraq's central government in about a year. this month, the u-s announced plans to deploy american military teams to iraq to conduct attacks against isis there and in syria. the u-s also said it's willing to send advisers and helicopters to help iraq retake ramadaiai the obama administration is urging the supreme court to reject a marijuana lawsuit from nebraska and oklahoma. the states want the high court to rule that colorado's legalization of pot is unconstitutio nal. the two statat have complained that colorado's action has hindered efforts to enforce anti-marijuana laws in their

marijuana that's coming across the border is a drain on their resources. however, the justice department says that the interstate dispute does not belong at the high court. iowa health officials have lowered the state's projected savings for switching its medicaid program to private care. the privatization of iowa's $4.2 billion dollar medicaid program starts on january 1st. yesterday, it was projected the iowa department of human services will save a"out $47 million in the first 6 mths of next year. the department first estimated a cost savings of about $51 million. however, a dhs spokesperson says the department could still save that much money. plenty of people decorate the outsides of their homes for christmas. but in le mars, iowa, probably none are more extravagent than one home along highway three. it's not hard to find if you've never driven by it before. your eyes will practically gravitate toward the display by how large it is. mark and shari frerichs are the two masterminds

blow-up characters. frerichs says they've been doing this for what he thinks is 24 years now. and the display keeps getting bigger every year. "how many lights, uh, we don't even know for sure," said mark frerichs. "we tried counting but we can't keep track of it. it's just unreal." he says to put it all up it takes about six weeks. but he says it seems never ending as upkeep is constant to replace bulbs. if you've seen it once, you haven't seen it all because it's different each year. frerichs says setting it up is the hardest part. "taking down is easisi because you don't have to worrry about where you're going to put it anymore," said mark frerichs. "it's already planned out so taking down is easier than putting up." mark says the reason he and his wife continue to do this is because it's their gift to the

"for women who are taking antidepressan t during pregnancy, they found that they have one half of one percent of increase in having g autisticichild." while the study did find an association -- it does not prove antidepressan ts cause autism. depression itself may play a role. while the researchers continue to sort out the possssle link ... doctors who treat pregnant women say those with mild depression may want to talk to their physician about going off medication and trying other therapies instead. for women with more severe forms of depression -- it's dangerous to stop taking anti- depressants abruptly without consulting a doctor. president obama is set to visit the national counterterrorism center in virginia later today. the president will travel to mclean, virginia, where he will be briefed by intelligence and security agagcies on threat assessments. following the meeting, president obama will offer brief remarks to an auditorium full of staffers. this visit comes in the wake of the deadly shootings in paris and san bernardino and increased public concern about terrorist attacks and the threat of isis. the obama administration is urging the supreme court to reject a marijuana lawsuit from nebraska and oklahoma. the states want the high court to rule that colorado's legalization of pot is unconstitutio nal. the two states have complained that colorado's action has hindered efforts to enforce anti-marijuana laws in their states. they say combatting marijuana that's coming across the border is a drain on their resources. however, the justice department says that the interstate dispute does not belong at the high court. a christmas display that might just be visibile from space is up in le mars, iowa.
