it's not everyday that a presidential candidate stops by your school. but friday morning, buena vista university in storm lake, iowa, was paid a visit by republican hopeful dr. ben carson. "being able to see the candidates live, being able to ask them questions, i think is a huge piece of the political process and it's a way to use that as an educational in the classroom and outside the classroom," said dr. ashley farmer-hanson, assistant dean for student life at buena vista university. while the university was out for winter break, there were still students who stopped by. su "when it comes to candidates' visits, some students say there are certain things they are looking for before they make their decisions on who they're going to vote for." "the issues for me more is immigration, foreign policy right now with everything that's going on in the middle east," said matt meiners, president of the buena vista college republicans. "we also have to look at our economic issues right now with taxing and spending." university students aren't the only young voters educating themselves on the issues. students from remsen- union high school in remsen, iowa can to hear carson speak and have heard from other candidates as well. "it's uncut. there's no way that they can cut everything out and make it all perfect," said

18-year-old student ciara foster. "what they say is what they actually mean here." and while at 18 they just make the age limit to vote, they are encouraging other youth to share their voices as well. "it is important to vote as a young person because the next four years, that's your future. what they do, what they say, that's the future," said remsen-union high school 18-year-old student katie gannon. a future that will be determined soon as the elections approach. in storm lake, iowa, tiffany lane, ktiv news 4.>> carly fiorina and rand paul are among the other candidates who have made stops at buena vista. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will also be at buena vista university next week. he'll be there on tuesday at 10:00 a.m. on monday, the vermont senator will be speaking at the boys club of sioux city at 7 p.m. the last time sanders campaigned in siouxland was in july. one siouxland school is seeing a big boost in test scores. the students of south sioux city middle school have been taking map tests for the past five years. these tests measure the academic progress of students over time. this year, they challenged

scores and students met that goal in every grade level in every content level tested. and now, they're rewarding the students for their hard work. "we really want to promote and have a culture that celebrates learning for students and show we wanted to show them that working hard and their efforts really do pay off. we are so proud of our teachers and so proud of our students," said south sioux city middle school assistant principal, erica somsky. they celebrated that success today with activities throughout the school like crafts and games. students say they're proud of their work. "when we celebrate it i feel that i met my goal and i'm proud of myself," said south sioux city middle school sixth grade student, jennifer ortiz. "we have to meet our goal because you always want to go up from the fall and so when you get to meet your goal you get to do fun things i guess," said south sioux city middle school seventh grade student, mackenzie mcguire. "since it's kind of a hard test and you know we've been taking it for a long time so it feels good to go up and have all this improvement," said south sioux city middle school eighth grade student, jagger horken. students say these test

the spring. and, they say it's also good preparation for a-c-ts and other future tests they'll have. the sioux city public museum is telling a story they've wanted to share for years with their newest exhibit. it's called "when quality was higher than price: martin's, davidson's and pelletier's." it features the history of three local department stores dating back to the 1880s. the display features over 200 historical photos, memorabilia and fashion from the late 1800s through the 1940s. davidsons was the largest retail store in iowa in the 1920s-- attracting shoppers from all over the midwest. the store later became what we now know as younkers. "it's a way to show how business was traditionally conducted in our cities, using sioux city specifically. then to show how sioux city had these stores that were nationally known. they may not have ranked with a marshall fields or a macy's, but they were very well known and well regarded stores," said sioux city public museum exhibits preparator, matt anderson. the display is open through

the trial for an estherville, iowa man charged in the shooting death of 19-year-old thomas bortvit has been delayed. lee christensen is now scheduled to go on trial in june. in emmet county district court. christensen is charged with 1st degree murder in bortvit's death back in june. bortvit's body was found days later near some buildings about two miles northeast of estherville. prosecutors have expressed concerns of a potential conflict of interest regarding the attorney representing christensen and members of his family. his parents and sister may be expected to testify at

the judge set february 15th as the deadline to consider any request to move the trial out of emmet county. a norfolk, nebraska woman already serving time for arson will not face additional time for witness tampering related to the case. a jury returned a not guilty verdict against 28-year old cassie zoubek in madison county district court to a count of witness tampering. authorities filed the charges against zoubek, after an investigation alleged that she tried to get witnesses in her arson case to change their story and lie to investigators. but, the jury did not find enough evidence to support a guilty verdict. she was sentenced to ten to 12 years in prison earlier this year after being convicted of burning down a norfolk mobile home owned by her father last october. a northside car accident tied up traffic in sioux city earlier this evening. a wreck involving at least two vehicles caused a traffic jam at the intersection of lewis boulevard and outer drive. sioux city fire rescue and police were on the scene. a car had windows damaged while

were driving through north sioux city to say her life was in danger. gary olson, an off-duty sheriff deputy stopped. erik johnson then drove up and pointed a gun at melonie, who was his wife. when gary showed the man his badge, johnson pointed his gun at gary. gary told his wife to drive away. johnson then drove off and chased the women. authorities say he shot at the car at least three times during a high speed chase. the daughter, shelby got shot in the lower back. after a police pursuit, johnson shot and killed himself. a siouxland animal rescue group getting a big of a boost today from local firefighters. the sioux city professional firefighters union presented noah's hope with a check for $500. the money came from members who took part in "no shave november." it was the first time the firefighters in sioux city took part in the fundraiser to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer. as the days until christmas dwindle, the collection efforts by groups like the toys for tots kick into high gear. the non-profit helped gather, sort and get donations ready to

the u.s. marine corps reserve's toys for tots program in the norfolk area began collecting toys around halloween. but the area coordinator says the drive really gets going after thanksgiving, giving them a three week window to collect all the toys they need. "every kid deserves to have that happiness at christmas time, to be able to open a gift and go, 'wow, a brand new toy!' the joy that it puts in that child is unbelievable." they plan to hand out about 2,500 toys in antelope, wayne, pierce, stanton, and madison counties. yankton continues to hit the bullseye when it comes to archery. the city has been selected to host two major tournaments in the next few years. that decision was made at the "world archery executive meeting" in istanbul last weekend. the world indoor championships will be held in 20-18 and the world field championships come to town in 20-20. around one-thousand athletes from sixty countries are expected to attend. this past summer yankton hosted the world youth championships ,

good from top-to- bottom, no matter what sport. girls basketball is no exception - and the girls from george-little rock are hoping that a tough schedule will prepare them to try and make a run at the state tournament. ktiv's sam curtiss has more. not only do they hope a tough schedule will prepare them for a postseason run. the mustangs will need to rely on experience. all nine players on the roster are upper classmen. six of the nine are seniors, led by senior mariah terhark. she averages just over 17 points a game. that's about eight more than she averaged as a junior. that could be because opposing defenses have zoned in on mia graham, a first team all conference player a season ago. it's been an up and down start to the season as the mustangs are three and four. in games against ranked teams, george-little rock is 0-2. but five of their next seven games are at home. a good chance to bolster their record. "the biggest challenge that i think the girls have this year is every single one of them, while they have varsity experience, they're adjusting to a different role on the

coach. "i think we're defintely better than a 3-4 team," said mia graham, a senior guard. "the games we lost we got outrebounded so i think we need to work on that and we can get ahead again." mustangs are hosting central lyon tonight who comes in at 1-4. we'll have those highlights tonight at 10 on sportsfource extra in george, iowa, sam curtiss, ktiv sportsfource. the new iowa girls rankings are out - in 5a, sioux city west stays at 14th. waukee is number-1. in 4a - bishop heelan holds at 10th. spencer moves up one spot to 14th. ballard holds the top spot there. down to 3a - pocahontas area is just behind top- ranked nevada. sioux center is 5th, cherokee is 7th - both are undefeated. spirit lake holds pat at 10th. unity christian stays at number-1 in the 2a rankings. manson-northwest webster is 4th. western christian and okoboji are 6th and 7th, respectively. there's lawton- bronson at number 11.
