good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm sheila brummer. matt breen has the night off. presidential hopeful dr. ben carson making a stop in sioux city tonight. it's all part of a three-day campaign swing throughout the state. at a rally at stoney creek, he spoke about his views on radical islam. he said "dangerous individuals are infiltrating our society." carson shared how he thinks the u-s needs to further recognize that radical islam is a

"we have to be serious about destroying them first. we have to use every mechanism that's available to us and we cannot fight a politically correct war...they count on us to be stupid enough to do that," said dr. ben carson, republican presidential candidate. carson's next stop tomorrow is in the shelby, iowa community of harlan. carson started the day in storm lake iowa at buena vista university. much of his focus was on his faith and how it has affected his life. carson discussed putting health care in the hands of individuals and health care providers as well as common core education. while the university was out for winter break, there were still students who stopped by to hear from carson. and they weren't the only young voters educating themselves on the issues. students from remsen- union high school in remsen, iowa can to hear carson speak. and, they have heard from other candidates as well. and while, they just make the age limit to vote, they are encouraging other youth to share their voices as well. "it is important to vote as a

four years, that's your future. what they do, what they say, that's the future," said remsen-union high school 18-year-old student katie gannon. a future that will be determined soon as the iowa caucuses grow near. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will also be at buena vista university next week. he'll be there on tuesday at 10:00 a.m. on monday, the vermont senator will be speaking at the boys club of sioux city at 7 p.m. the last time sanders campaigned in siouxland was in july. controversy surrounds bernie sanders campaign after a staffer got caught looking at voter information for hillary clinton. the staffer was fired. but, the sanders campaign claims the democratic national committe is trying to sabotage sanders and is favoring clinton. a computer glitch allowed the staffer to peek at clinton's voter information. the d-n-c has now shut down the sanders campaign's access to its own voter database. and the sanders team is threatening to go to federal court to get access. the campaign claims the venter hired to oversee the voter list is guilty of

clinton says the sanders campaign stole her voter information. sanders and clinton will go head-to-head at the third democratic debate tomorrow night in new hampshire. martin o'malley the former governor of maryland will join clinton and sanders. they take the stage at 7. the debate will air on abc. the president has signed a trillion dollar spending bill stopping a government shutdown. it will boost spending for defense and non-defense programs over the coming year. the president fended off efforts to stop federal money for planned parenthood and to place greater restrictions on syrian refugees. republicans secured an end to the ban on most crude oil exports. congress also extended $680 billion in tax cuts for businesses and individuals. republican leaders and the white house have said they feel good about the outcome. it's hard to feel good about the weather.. it's cold! but what does the rest of the weekend have in store?

meteorologist ron demers to find out. the wind combined with temps in the 20s to keep it a very cool friday around siouxland. we also saw some clouds and flurries rotating through the region although most of those clouds should clear tonight as lows dip well down into the teens for most of us with single digits even likely in northern siouxland. a south will start blowing saturday and that will begin bringing back the warmer temperatures.

big boost in test scores. the students of south sioux city middle school have been taking map tests for the past five years. these tests measure the academic progress of students over time. this year, they challenged students to see an increase in scores and students met that goal in every grade level in every content level tested. and now, they're rewarding the students for their hard work and the students say they're proud. "when we celebrate it i feel that i met my goal and i'm proud of myself," said south sioux city middle school sixth "we have to meet our goal because you always want to go up from the fall and so when you get to meet your goal you get to do fun things i guess," said south sioux city middle school seventh grade student, mackenzie mcguire. "since it's kind of a hard test and you know we've been taking it for a long time so it feels good to go up and have all this improvement," said south sioux city middle school eighth grade student, jagger horken. students say these test improvements will help them with their final map testing in the spring. and, they say it's also good preparation for a-c-ts

have. the sioux city public museum has a new exhibit. it's called "when quality was higher than price: martin's, davidson's and pelletier's." it features the history of three local department stores dating back to the 1880s. the display features historical photos, memorabilia and fashion from the late 1800s through the 1940s. davidsons was the largest retail store in iowa in the 1920s-- attracting shoppers from all over the midwest. the store later became what we now know as younkers. the display is open through march 6th. still to come on sportsfource extra.... highlights from basketball games all over siouxland including bluff's thomas jefferson high. the wind combined with temps in 20s to keep it a very cool friday around siouxland. we

and flurries rotating through the region although most of those clouds should clear tonight as lows dip well down into the teens for most of us with single digits even likely in northern siouxland. a south will start blowing saturday and that will begin bringing back the warmer temperatures. highs in the upper 30s on saturday could move into the low to mid 40s on sunday even though more clouds move in as the weekend goes along. it looks like our highs will stay above average in our 7-day forecast with a slight chance of a little light rain and snow mix on wednesday.

started ours last week." on the plus side, many cities which saw budgets busted by snow removal last year haven't had to shell it out this year. but not everyone is enjoying tee-shirt weather. snow blankets much of the west salt lake city already has more snow than it got all of last wier. forecasters say warm weather will blanket the east and midwest for several more weeks before a more normal winter pattern returns.. chris pollone, nbc news. >> as the days until christmas dwindle, the collection efforts by groups like toys for tots kick into high gear. the non-profit helped gather, sort and get donations ready to deliver to children tomorrow in norfolk, nebraska. they started collecting toys around halloween. but, the area coordinator says the drive really gets going after thanksgiving. that gives just them a three week window to collect all the toys they need. "every kid deserves to have that happiness at christmas time, to be able to open a gift and go, 'wow, a brand new toy!' the joy that it puts in that child is unbelievable." they plan to hand out about

thanks for tuning in to sports fource extra. i'm mark freund - brad pautsch has the night off. we've got 8 high school basketball games on the docket tonight. a pair of metro matchups, a huge boy/girl doubleheader in hull, iowa, plus stops in emerson and wayne in nebraska. plus, we'll check out the musketeers - but tonight we'll start in sioux city. when you play in a conference like the missouri river, the teams in class 3a get plenty of chances to step up to 4a competition. that was the case for the sergeant bluff-luton guys. the warriors, receiving votes in class 3a, made the short trip to face a good east high team. the black raiders - coming into this one at 5-1, with a win over heelan on tuesday. but it was jacob shulz who was putting on a show early for

nice stutter step and finish on the drive. the warriors got out to a 12-nothing lead - don't leave shulz open - he buries the three - shulz had a team- high 28 points. but here comes east late in the quarter - off the miss - big jaylen rees - the 6-7 senior pulls it down and gets the follow to go. and then connor murrell - doing what connor murrell does - he drives for two of his 32 points. east comes back to beat sergeant bluff-luton, 79-71. over at "the pit." the heelan rls, hosting council bluffs, t-j. crusaders up big in the third quarter - but t-j continues to fight - abby hays collects her own rebound and puts it back. but heelan rolled along in this one - carlie long - takes the pass from lexie stolen and buries the three - crusaders up 54-14. later - taylor ferguson stuck underneath - she hits long on the wing - long drops another one in

roll. heelan - scoring, even when they're a little sloppy - kierrah llanos finds the ball under the hoop and converts - cruaders roll over cbtj, 61-24 to the rushmore state - the dakota valley guys - at home against canton. first quarter - on the inbound play - jayce kittler - dakota valley off to a good start. but canton strikes back - christian beachler gets the jumper to go - beachler was the man tonight for the c-hawks. canton goes back to beachler later on the easy layup. but the panthers handle their business - robert rosenquist drills the triple - rosenquist had a team-high 24 points and dakota valley gets the home win, 81-55. there was a massive boy- girl doubleheader in hull, iowa tonight. ktiv's sam curtiss was in hull for all the action and has more from studio b tonight. both the western christian boys and girls teams are perennial state

both get plenty of challenges against higher-class schools in the lakes conference. tonight, spencer came to town - both the tigers' boys and girls teams are ranked - so there were not one, but two matchups between ranked opponents tonight. starting with the girls - wolfpack led by 25 early in the thrid quarter. tigers need points - alley schlaeger - not how she drew it up but gets it back and to go to make it 50-26. wolfpack inside game very strong - ashtyn veerbeek gets a good look - she finished the night with 18 points. more inside action - kaira moss - wolfpack leading scorer with two of her 20 points. spencer turned it over a lot and you can't do that if you wan't to come back - erika feenstra had 17 points. western christian won by 50 tonight. the final, 75-25. "i thought our inside game really had a nice night," said bill harmsen, "kaira moss, aashtyn veerbeek did a really great job inside. our bench players, janae wynja, really had a nice night coming off the bench.

central lyon coming to town tonight. summer struckman gets into the lane and gets the good bounce to get the scoring started - 2-0 early on. mustang fans have seen this connection a lot - mia graham to mariah terhark she lays it. that started a quick run for glr - taylor jumbeck inside - gets fouled storng finish. mustangs led 11-5. one more mustnag bucket from kaley arends but central lyon on the road downs glr, 55-47. still to come, two more basketball games from nebraska, including a top-10 battle in emerson. and, the musketeers try for their third straight win please stay with us. the state semifinals in volleyball this fall. the pirate basketball team is looking to duplicate that feat. e-h is ranked 3rd by the omaha world herald, and was hosting number-10 ponca in a top-10 showdown. the pirates are the defending lewis and clark tournament champions - both teams are 4-1 this year. early on, the pirates force a turnover and abby drieling takes it in for the easy layup, emerson-hubbard goes up by two. e-h continues their attack as ponca she nails the 3-pointer to put the pirates up three. ponca answers back, though, as elizabeth watchhorn puts up a three that rattles around the rim before finally going in, and that ties it up. it's too much emerson-hubbard though, blanke is left wide open again on the inbounds play, and she hits another 3-pointer to put the pirates back up. they beat the indians tonight, 71 to 51. the wayne boys - 1-4, at home against 3-2 wisner-pilger.

good passes lead to logan godbersen hitting the deep 2-pointer to give wisner-pilger a two point lead. but wayne would control it from there, grayson mcbride gets the long pass in the corner, and he sinks the three to put the blue devils up four. later, the blue devils get it done in the paint as drew davie misses his shot but colby keiser is there to grab the board and get the basket, putting wayne up four once again. the blue devils strike again as this time a long pass leads to payten gamble hitting the 3-pointer, and wayne takes down the gators tonight, 53 to 44. to the tyson - musketeers have won two straight - tri-city in town tonight. first period - storm on the power play - but eeli the other way - and converts for a short-handed goal - musketeers take a 1-0 lead on the great individual effort. tri-city strikes back - they get there to rebound his own miss - storm tie
