with the candidate and will have his response to the controversial data breach on news 4 at ten. after recent mass shootings in the u.s., and overseas, gun control has taken center stage in the presidential campaigns. fears of potential new gun laws are often cited as driving factors for a spike in gun permit applications. that's true for at least one siouxland county as ktiv's sam curtiss reports. on a mid-december day, foot traffic at shooter's paradise in sioux city is slow. the owner, paul barrett, says he's fielding more phone calls than transactions. "i'm getting a lot of concealed carry class questions," said paul barrrett, owner of shooter's paradise. barrett says he's answering three to four times more calls a day about the topic. "how much, where it's at, how to do it [or] how to go about getting one," said paul barrett. some might suggest the recent san bernadino shootings is the reason for the increase. but, barrett isn't sure about that. "i don't know," said paul barrett. "i can't answer that." some people in woodbury county

calls about concealed carry licenses. they're taking action. "just in the first week of december we've had 120 applications filled out for carry permits," said major todd wieck. which is a lot. december's applications were the most in any month since february of 2014. "i think people are a litte bit more inclined to protect themselves now rather than just protecting themselves in their own home," said major todd wieck. statistics from the woodbury county sheriff's office show they were averaging 72 permits a month until this point. back at shooter's paradise paul barrett continues to field phone calls. but, he says it's nothing like the aftermath of another tragedy. "sandy hook was really a bad time," said paul barrett. "now people are thinking about it but it wasn't nothing like sandy hook." in sioux city, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. as we prepare to start a new year, there might be another spike when it comes to gun permits. major wieck says that could be due to permit renewals. in 2011, iowa changed to a

permits. those permits are good for five-years. following the attack in southern california, gun owners in siouxland are taking advantage of their 2nd amendment right chase cjeka is a co-owner of american brothers in arms gun shop in sioux city. his shop has seen the impact on the store's firearm sales made by recent mass shootings that caught national attention. "it really impacts sales as far as, it really increases sales," said american brothers in arms co-owner, chase cjeka. loss of a high school wrestler who died over the weekend. today, the clay county medical examiner says the preliminary investigation shows austin roberts died of natural causes. he was a senior at spencer high school. the case has been turned over to the state medical examiner. austin's father told nbc news that his son had never collapsed before and they don't understand what happened. one minute he was competing for the championship and was doing fine. the third period started and he just went down and never got back up. the high school was open yesterday for grief roberts placed eighth at the class 2a state tournament last year. he planned on wrestling and playing football at iowa central community college in fort dodge. we'll let you know when funeral arraignment have been a wichita man has been sentenced in sioux county, iowa 37-year-old roberto martinez-marcial received two,

sentences and two years of probation for assault, burglary and going armed with intent. earlier this month, officials significant other with another man, the victim, inside the significant other's home. martinez-marcial stabbed the victim with a knife and then fled the scene. he was also sentenced to 180 days in the sioux county jail then immigration will start deportation proceedings. police say they are still looking for a second suspect in connection with a robbery and assault that terrorized a sioux city woman and her two sons earlier this month. authorities have arrested 21-year-old austin cummings of sioux city and charged him with robbery, going armed with intent, assault while participating in a felony and theft in the 2nd degree. he is scheduled to be arraigned on thursday, december 31st. police say cummings was one of two men who entered jodi blackwell's home at 26-27 south alice street, early last monday morning. police say they will not identify the second suspect at this time.

cause of a deadly fire in spencer, iowa over the weekend. firefighters responded to a a trailer home at 317 w. 18th around 1:30 saturday afternoon, just off of highway 71. after putting out the flames, firefighters found the person who lived there dead. investigators say the fire was caused by flammable items placed located too close to a space heater. but, they are not releasing the name of the victim. the investigation continues into a deadly fire in denison, iowa. thirty-seven-year old wendy waldemar died in the first on 1st avenue north. her husband sufferened minor injuries. the fire marshall tells ktiv news 4 today the fire wasn't suspicious. but, they still don't know what started the blaze. today, a legal battle between des moines water works entered a federal courtroom. the utility is suing three counties in northwest iowa. ktiv's tommie clark attended the hearing and joins us outside the federal courthouse tonight with live link 4 with an update. attorneys defending sac,

counties previously filed a motion to dismiss some of the counts in the lawsuit. and today a judge heard arguments from both sides to determine if those will be dismissed or not. last january, des moines water works sued three siouxland counties. the utility is suing 10 drainage districts, claiming the water it receives from the raccoon river is polluted by nitrates from ag operations located upstream in those counties. the counties' attorney says that under iowa law, drainage districts are immune from lawsuits and therefore some of those counts should be thrown out. how law works and they're stepping outside the bounds of rules allowed regarding drainage the water utility serving 500,000 customers in central iowa says it has spent more than one- point-five million dollars since december to remove nitrate from the water to keep it within safe drinking limits. the judge made a comment today the utility seems "to be the only one in the state advocating this principal." he asked, "it hasn't been done before, so why now?"

gathered to prepare their robots and score points with some judges. first tech challenge teams met at humphrey high school to bounce ideas off each other to get ready for state competition. lieutenant governor mike foley came out for the event and spoke to the crowd. "learning gear ratios, learning about traction, learning about leveraging, the concepts of physics and engineering, and the computer programming, using smartphones, and using a second smartphone as a remote control device to control your machine; these are all pretty advanced technology ideas that these kids are mastering at a very young age." there will be a competition on january 23rd in columbus, ohio where you can see some of these robots in action. when it comes to volunteering, iowa is one of the most giving in the nation. a new study by the corporation for national and community service shows iowans rank 10th in the country for volunteering.

of iowa residents volunteered last year and gave almost 70 million hours of service worth and over a million and a half billion dollars. and nearly 72% of iowa residents participated in informal volunteering which includes helping sick neighbors or watching each others children. south dakota ranked nineth. a local sioux city company is expanding. consumer supply distributing plans to build a 50,000 square foot expansion in bridgeport west industrial park. the company is a "wholesale distibutor of ag and animal nutirion products." the vice president says after being in business for 60 years in sioux city, they look forward to staying in town. iowa coach kirk ferentz has been named the big ten coach of the year, and has won two other national coaching awards. the associated press named their coach of the year today -- and ferentz was the runner-up. ferentz received 10 of 60 first place votes from the ap to finish behind clemson's dabo swinney, who has his tigers undefeated and are the number-one seed in the college football playoffs. swinney is the first clemson coach to win the award. ferentz -- in his 17th season -- will take a 12-1 record to the rose bowl to face stanford. the 12 wins are the most ever for a hawkeye team. iowa leaves for the rose bowl on thursday. the second-ranked hawkeye wrestling team will compete at the prestigous midland championhips next week in evanston, illinois. iowa will send eight wrestlers to the event -- and seven of those men are ranked in the top ten in their weight class. last year, the hawks won four individual titles and won the event with a tournament record 189 points. head coach tom brands wants his guys to battle for every point.
