other and keep moving on," said father john vakulskas, jeannie vakulskas' cousin. those words echoed through st. joseph's catholic church wednesday morning. dozens of people gathered to reflect on the life of a pioneer... jeanne vakulskas. "she had a footprint on the fire department being the first female firefighter in sioux city and she set a standard for everybody else that came on," said mark roth, a lieutenant with the sioux city fire department. vakulskas joined the fire department in 1985, a career she dedicated her life to for 22 years. while a fire engine was parked outside during her funeral mass, firefighters sat together in the corner of the church. it was a reflection of the brotherhood she was accepted into. "she was just very compassionate," said sioux city fire chief tom everett. "she had a unique ability to be able to connect with people and really make them comfortable in some of the worst situations that they'd ever experience." those who knew vakulskas say her greatest accomplishment was her three sons. "i don't even know if it's hit me yet, because it just doesn't seem real that she's gone," said dan plathe, vakulskas' son. "i feel

"i don't know if i will ever be able to top what she did," said lee hansen, vakulskas' youngest son. "but it definitely helps me want to be better, how she cared for people." with all the recognition vakulskas earned, her family says she was never the one to brag about the impact she had. "her legacy will live on forever," said jerry plathe, vakulskas' oldest son. "and you know only us boys are boastful of that. you know like i said, she was very modest but it's us boys that are probably the proudest." and, as long as her family, and friends, remember her, jeanne vakulskas's legacy will live forever.>> there was a quote posted in jeanne vakulska's funeral program... it read, quote "those we love don't go away, they
