today, we're dealing with the effects of the winter storm that hit siouxland yesterday and overnight. as the morning snow hit, roads and sidewalks began to freeze over. sioux city was a white out earlier yesterday, with less than half a mile visibility. and the icy sidewalks and streets were making it more difficult for travel. earlier in the morning, crews were out clearing the streets and spreading sand, but it was slow going. the winter weather conditions did cause some problems for drivers. ktiv's tommie clark shows us the tricky travel on sioux city roads yesterday.

"this morning after about 9:30 they just started to deteriate quickly. we really saw that significant change. we've had troopers staggered. some came out at 4am, 6am, and then i came out at 7 and then we'll all extend our shifts throughout the day," said i state trooper, john farley. trooper john farley says with the limited visibility, it's important to take extra precautions. "we encourage people, turn your headlights on. leave them on low beams. we always say see and be seen," said iowa state trooper, john farley. "and, that's not the only tip for siouxlanders that do have to go out on those snow-covered roads." there's still a thin layer of ice that's built up with road traffic and blowing snow. so there's some important tips to keep in mind. "slow down. always expect the unexpected. take care when you're passing or approaching your snow plows. don't overestimate their speed. you might be coming up on them pretty quick. not only watching what they're doing, but watch all around you," said iowa state trooper, john farley. farley says driving is a 360-degree process and it's not just what's in front of

if you do swerve into a median or ditch and you're stranded, trooper farley says to get out your phone and call 9-1-1. make sure some emergency personnel know where you are and they will locate you as quickly as possible. and never leave your vehicle, let the emergency personnel come to you. "this is my first time sledding this year," said sledder, vishakha kanwar. "my goal was to go sledding every single day, so that's what i'm going to try to do." with several more inches in the forecast for most of siouxland today, it should

opportunity for sledders to hit the hills. many people spent their monday digging out from under the snow. sioux city residents took to the cold to dig out their cars, sidewalks, parking lots and drive ways. some had to use more than a shovel to push around all the snow. and while many don't look forward to these big snowfalls, for others, the snow provides work and a paycheck. "most of the time, we don't stop until 8, 9, 10 o' clock in the morning. we go all through the night, take shifts. there's four on our crew, but somebody will take a break and warm up for a little bit, will stop and grab a coffee or whatnot, and we get right back out there." said ashley kellen, contracted employee. kellen is part of a crew that clears snow off the properties of a local contractor. she said when these big snowstorms hit, it's usually an all day job getting everything cleared off. residents in texas are picking the pieces after deadly tornados turned homes into rubble. the national weather service

tornado with winds of up to 180 miles per hour tore through the city of garland. the tornadoes were part of a storm system being blamed for 24 deaths in three states. c-n-n's alina machado reports.

barnes and her family rode out the storm inside a bathroom. her husband and her children held on as the twister tore through the home. (carol barnes/surviv or) "the walls started shaking and the house was rocking, and and we just kept hearing these noises and just 'hold on, hold on,' and then it was nothing." they survived - but lost everything in the storm. so did david ruiz and his family. avid ruiz/survivor) "you really don't know what's coming next, you don't know how to recover yet." the family's two cats are still missing. the wintry mix that followed the tornado left little hope of salvaging much of what was left behind. but ruiz says he's glad they have insurance, grateful they have support of family and friends and most of all, thankful his wife and two children survived. (david ruiz/survivor) "thankfully a lot of family has sent a lot of money that we can recover and we're able to eat and stay somewhere warm with a friend." in illinois and missouri - more than a dozen people died after driving onto flooded roads. the victims include four foreign soldiers who were temporarily stationed at fort leonard wood

now people in both states are bracing for what could be record flooding in the coming days. >> thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed across the u-s because of bad weather. more than 700 flights were canceled at dallas-fort worth international airport alone because of the tornadoes. o'hare international airport officials reported more than 400 flights were canceled yesterday. and, that also impacted the sioux gateway airport. officials say a typical travel y sees about 150 cancelations and four- thousand delays. the trtrel troubles may only get worse as the national weather service predicts the wintery weather to continue this week. if you have some gifts to return or exchange... coming up, we'll give you some things to keep in mind before you head out to the stores. ben: and i'll have your complete

santa, with the help of some california sanitation workers, made a 4-year-old's christmas wish come true. but this was no ordinary wish and his unusual request brought out the entire neighborhood. kevin oliver reports.

rahm emmanuel cut his vacation short amid new calls for his resignation. two officers shot and killed a 19 year old they say was acting out with a baseball bat. chicago police also say they accidentially killed a mother of 5 in the gunfire. the justice department is already looking at the chicago police department as a whole for their community response and escalation protocols.. i'm edward lawrence in washington, now back to you. >> ethan couch, the texas teen who was described as having "affluenza" while on trial for killing four people in a drunk- driving crash in 2013 has been arrested by mexican authorities. mexican federal officials have confirmed couch and his mother tonya were arrested yesterday. a man hunt began for couch and his mother after he missed an appointment with his probation officer. the tarrant county sheriff believes a brief twitter video of young men playing beer pong may have triggered couch to flee. the person who posted the video claimed that 18 year old couch, who can't drink, was in the video and was violating his court terms. authorities say two women died

highway and crashed in northeast nebraska. the accident happened sunday afternoon on highway 75 in thurston county near pender. the nebraska state patrol says the vehicle rolled down an embankment. they died at the scene. the patrol identified them as 30-year-old britney mccauley, of walthill, and 24-year-old brianna wolfe, of macy. the patrol says investigators suspect alcohol use was a factor in the crash. friends and family gathered yesterday to honor the memory of a spencer, iowa wrestler. more than 12-hundred people packed spencer high school to attend funeral services for senior austin roberts. during the championship round the 18-year-old collapsed and never got back up. a gofundme account was put together by the spencer tail-twisters to help austin's family with medical and funeral expenses. the account has raised nearly $50,000. if you would like to donate there's a link in this story if you go to ktiv.com. new hampshire's largest newspaper

finally this morning, a group of cliff photos spreading on social media have made this little known place in the suburbs of rio de janeiro a hot tourism attraction. the site is now receiving curious hikers who want to pose for photos on its cliff. tourists first have to climb the hill for over an hour and then wait in line, perhaps for another hour under the scorching summer sun, in order to get a chance to stand on a stone, which is right on the edge of the cliff and pose for pictures. one local tourist said even though the line is long,
