today, we're dealing with the effects of the winter storm that hit siouxland yesterday and overnight. as the morning snow hit, roads and sidewalks began to freeze over. sioux city was a white out earlier yesterday, with less than half a mile visibility. and the icy sidewalks and streets were making it more difficult for travel. earlier in the morning, crews were out clearing the streets and spreading sand, but it was slow going. the winter weather conditions did cause some problems for drivers. ktiv's tommie clark shows us the tricky travel on sioux city roads yesterday.

"this morning after about 9:30 they just started to deteriate quickly. we really saw that significant change. we've had troopers staggered. some came out at 4am, 6am, and then i came out at 7 and then we'll all extend our shifts throughout the day," said i state trooper, john farley. trooper john farley says with the limited visibility, it's important to take extra precautions. "we encourage people, turn your headlights on. leave them on low beams. we always say see and be seen," said iowa state trooper, john farley. "and, that's not the only tip for siouxlanders that do have to go out on those snow-covered roads." there's still a thin layer of ice that's built up with road traffic and blowing snow. so there's some important tips to keep in mind. "slow down. always expect the unexpected. take care when you're passing or approaching your snow plows. don't overestimate their speed. you might be coming up on them pretty quick. not only watching what they're doing, but watch all around you," said iowa state trooper, john farley. farley says driving is a 360-degree process and it's not just what's in front of

"first of all plan your route. we know we are experiencing bad wheather here but we always encourage people make sure they check where their destination, what it's like. make sure you know where you're at on the roadway. if you're traveling down i-29 towards the omaha area make sure you know your mile markers. what exit you just passed," said iowa state patrol trooper, john farley. if it's an extended period of snow like yestserday-- bring a jacket, blanket, gloves, and bottled water. if you have to drive somewhere today, make sure you check the road conditions before you go. you'll find a link on our website, ktiv-dot-com. under the

"this is my first time sledding this year," said sledder, vishakha kanwar. "most of the time, we don't stop until 8, 9, 10 o' clock in the morning. we go all through the night, take shifts. there's four on our crew, but somebody will take a break and warm up for a little bit, will stop and grab a coffee or whatnot, and we get right back out there." said ashley kellen, contracted employee. kellen is part of a crew that clears snow off the properties of a local contractor. she said when these big snowstorms hit, it's usually an all day job getting everything cleared off. residents in texas are picking the pieces after deadly tornados turned homes into rubble. the national weather service

big situations. friday presents a new challenge against a stanford offense led by a-p player of the year, running back christian mccaffrey, who set an ncaa record with nearly 3,500 all-purpose yards he's a guy who certainly has the hawkeyes attention. "he just seems to run through arm tackles like it's no big deal," said iowa linebacker cole fishers. "he's really dangerous in the pass." "it's hard to tackle him," said iowa defensive coordinator phil parker, "it's hard to get your hands wrapped around him and make tackles. i think you've got to leverage him, and you've got to make sure you can contain him." which is something the iowa defense has been built on, strength and fundamentals, the big battle appears to be up front which is the way the hawks say they like it. "for me that's the most fun when you're down in the trenches, big collisions in the holes," added fisher. "i think that's like true football i guess." the respect the hawks have for mccaffrey seems to be mutual from the stanford star "we know

"there's going to be plays made all over the place. iowa's a great football team and they're here for a reason. so, we know it's going to present a lot of challenges." and in order to contain the stanford offense the hawks say they've got to be mean, which apparently isn't a problem for jaleel johnson - "my family's full of mean people. it was handed down," said johnson.
