matt breen is off tonight. tonight, we're hearing new details about an escape from a burning apartment building in northwest, iowa. ktiv's sam curtiss with the story from sloan. he talked to the first responder who many are calling a "hero". "there was no time for thinking," said todd peterson. "you just need to react." as todd peterson stared down a woman hanging upside down from a second floor window. aggressively trying to escape the flames of an apartment fire tuesday. "it happened very quickly," said todd peterson. "very quickly." peterson, a deputy with the woodbury county sheriff's office, was first on site at the prairie apartments in sloan, iowa. "and upon arrival i did note that the second floor of the apartment building was completely engulfed," said peterson. next, peterson saw one woman who had already jumped from the top floor. as another woman positioned herself to do the same. "a lot of things went through my head at that point and time," said todd peterson. "the first thing i was thinking was i just didn't want her to fall and land on her neck." be able to catch her but at least wanted to brace her fall." authorities say the charred mess was caused by items left alone on a stove. cars idled by wednesday, looking over the building described in short as a total loss. a loss, that could have been much worse. "from the looks of the building they probably didn't have a choice," said todd peterson. "if they probably wouldn't of came out that window they probably would have been killed in that fire." in sloan, iowa, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. peterson says he called the hospital to check on the women. he was told they are doing just fine. temperatures are dropping tonight. meteorologist ben dorenbach is here to tell us just how cold it's going to get. after quick inch or two of snow in some places this morning, we should be done with snow for both the month and the year. our snow total ended up being just over 11 inches for the month of december leaving us well above our average of 7.8 inches. december of 2015 also ended up being the 2nd wettest on record in sioux city with 2.86 inches of measurable precipitation, capping off yet another wetter (by almost 8"!) than average year in sioux city! cold temperatures will be the main issue the next few nights with many expected to be barely above if not below zero tonight.

the family requested the honor and the cardinal agreed. of the five eulogies delivered, police commissioner bill bratton seemed the most emotional. he said he'd only met detective lemm only once-- at his promotion ceremony two years ago but triggered a standing ovation with his salute to lemm's record of service and ultimate sacrifice and his promise the police community would take care of the family left behind. he spoke from the heart about a true american hero, it brings emotion to everyone; you cant help but rise to your feet out of respect and love for a fallen brother. there was a final salute outside the cathedral-- taps for a man who was as good as many wish they could be. republican presidential candidate rick santorum making some stops in siouxland today. the former pennsylvania senator attending a meet and greet at a home in holstein, iowa this afternoon. santorum, who won the last iowa caucuses is low in the polls. but, he says he does plan to gain some ground before february 1st. "i think you're going to see the polls change," said santorum. "we've seen that in pretty much every iowa caucus. most folks here decide late and i don't think this is going to be any different this time." santorum also attended private gatherings in sioux city and sioux center tonight. we're learning more about candidate ted cruz's trip through iowa next week. he's planning to visit 36 counties in six days. one of his stops will take him to dordt college, in sioux center on tuesday, january 5th. he'll speak at the de yager activity center on campus from 6 until 8:30 p.m. democrat martin o'malley will be visiting sioux city on sunday. the former maryland governor

doors open at 11:45 a.m. and, democrat hillary clinton plans to be in sioux city on tuesday for an afternoon event. today more than 350 kids found out if they have what it takes to be a ninja warrior. the second annual siouxland ninja warrior camp began monday at the hper center in sioux city. the camp included different stations with several inflatables. the kids' favorite..the melt master. not only did the camp touch on physcial fitness but also learning about healthy snack options. today marked the last day of the camp this year. holmes already has a vision for next year's event...more inflatables. later in sportsforce: ready for the rosebowl: the two head coaches meet the media one more time before the big game on new year's day.

do you get to the point of arrest? for impaired drivers, there are a set of tests the sioux city police department's asap unit takes. "when we are looking for drunk drivers are small cues, like somebody who drifts across the dotted line and move into the wrong lane." once the drivers are pulled over, there are a set of tests. for drunk driving: "follow it with your eyes only, keep your head still." looking for involuntary jerking of the eyes. "five, six, seven, eight" the nine step walk and turn test. "like this. one thousand one. one thousand two. one thousand three." and the one leg stand test for 30 seconds. there is also a preliminary breath test on scene. "nats blowing" "we take kind of the totality of all of it," "just cause they fail one doesn't primarily mean we're going to take them for drunk driving. it's just combining all of them together." su "after arriving at the jail, drivers take the state certified datamaster, which is an official breath test." (nats of blowing) whether they test over a point o-8 or not is whether they'll be charged. for drugged driving, testing for police takes a little longer. there is a 12 step process that takes at least 45 minutes. officers check pupil size, clinical signs such as blood

and before impaired drivers are released, law enforcement makes sure it's safe first. you can call the number on your screen for your free ride through early new year's day. police arrested a man in ohio after he posted a facebook video of himself driving while drinking alcohol. 28-year old dustin rittgers of his behavior and one of his facebook friends saw it and tipped off authorities. dispatchers were able use motor vehicle records to identify his vehicle. rittgers was arrested and charged with several offenses including drunk driving. brad's here -- the rose bowl coaches met the media today. kirk ferentz and david shaw have a lot of respect around the country -- and for each other. we'll hear from both men. and, the briar cliff men try to continue a long winning streak.
