(matt) joining us. i'm matt breen. and i'm sheila brummer. the investigation continues into the death of a pilot whose plane crashed near pender, nebraska. (matt) ktiv's tiffany lane was on the tiffany? matt and sheila, the wayne county sheriff's office, and the f-a-a, were at the rural corn field this morning to small plane. the plane was a single engine cessna, which looked just like this one. the wreckage was found overnight.

this morning, vehicles kept going by the house and highway patrolmen went by," said kenny thomsen, the owner of the farm where the plane crashed. "and i seen- and i knew it had to be close and then when the fog lifted, i could see it." monday, the wayne county sheriff's office and federal aviation agency officials were on scene to investigate. nebraska state troopers were also there to safeguard the area. thomsen says he spoke with an faa official monday. "he said that as soon as talked to a mechanic in wayne, they'd come out with a flat bed and asked if i could help lift it up on there," said thomsen. an faa spokesperson says the national transportation safety board will be leading the investigation. she said it could take between a year and 14 months to complete.>> the investigation is expected to take at least a year. the f-a-a spokesperson says there are lots of different agencies involved, and sometimes parts of the aircraft are sent to the manufacturer . the woodbury county sheriff's office has identified two women who jumped from a second-story apartment window during a sloan, fire last week. nineteen-year-old alanna gotto of sloan, iowa and 19-year-old alyssa boggs of anthon were both transported to mercy medical center for treatment and released on january 1st. woodbury county sheriff's deputy, todd peterson, was first on the scene and assisted gotto and boggs when they jumped from the officials with the sloan fire department said the fire started because of cooking materials alone. authorities have identified a rural norfolk man who died after falling through the ice on an atv in northeast nebraska. 57-year-old randall simpson reportedly drove an atv onto a rural pond just south of norfolk when the ice broke. it happened shortly after four saturday afternoon. fire officials deployed their ice rescue team. simpson was pronounced dead at a hospital in omaha. the incident remains under investigation. woodbury county democrats and republicans are gearing up for caucus night. which means last minute campaign stops and phone calls to voters. ktiv's michelle schoening is live in "studio b" with more. michelle? matt and shelia this week alone three presidential hopefuls will make stops in siouxland all in preparation for the iowa caucuses. i spoke with woodbury county's republican party chairman, and a former democratic party chairman, to see how they're preparing for the big night. with just days left until the 2016 iowa caucuses both parties are busy making preparations for february 1st. a way both parties are gearing up for the caucuses is emphasizing early registration. "if you get registered a couple weeks, like now, so that you are on our records that shows who are registered. it just backs up the process when you have a line when we have a line of 100 people trying to register," said kevin alons. chairman of woodbury county republican party. another big preparation...f inding your correct precinct number and location as it could be different than your

about our caucus locations and about where and when to go, " said rick mullin, former chairman of woodbury county democrats. candidates are busy making their final stops across the state before caucus night trying to reach as many iowans as they can. "the enviroment that we are in those visits certainly are important as peopple are still trying to decide. maybe they are torn between two or three candidates and meet that person another time or for the first time and think that's my guy or girl," said kevin alons, woodbury county republican party chairman. "it's the last ten days i think when you start to see real changes and you are going to see the final poll numbers shift and consolidate and solidify and that's a very interesting time. so right now everything is tossed in the air and who knows what's going to happen by caucus night," said rick mullin, former woodbury county democratic party chair. >> the iowa caucuses begin february 1st at 7 p.m., but if you plan to go, be sure to arrive a little early as there could be long lines. matt and shelia. can visit the woodbury county republicans or woodbury county democrats website. also, the iowa secretary of state's website can help you find your all of those webites can be website ktiv-dot-com. matt...shelia. iowa officials have launched an online voter registration system, despite criticism it doesn't reach every potential voter. the iowa secretary of state says that the system, launched on new year's day, is intended to compliment the options already available to residents. that includes same-day voter registration at the polls on election day. the new system is available through a website developed in part by the iowa department of transportatio n, and it's accessible to residents with a driver's license or dot-issued id. ted cruz has brought his campaign back to iowa. and he'll be here for the better part of a week. the republican texas senator kicked off a six-day, 28-stop bus tour of iowa this morning in boone.

guthrie center, and winterset before wrapping things up in missouri valley. he's scheduled to speak at penny's diner there late tonight.. at 11:45. then tommorrow, cruz is set to speak at dordt college in sioux center. that's scheduled for six p-m at the de yager activity center. gop presidential candidate rand paul is returning to iowa later this week. the kentucky senator will be in council bluffs on thursday at 10:00 a.m. from there he heads to sioux city for a "stand with rnad meet and greet." that takes place at 1:00 p.m. a the sioux city public library. from there paul heads to carroll, iowa. (sheila) hillary clinton brings her campaign back to sioux city tomorrow. she will have a townhall event at the orpheum theatre. it starts at 2:15 and is open to the public. the city of sioux city appointed three important new positions this morning. bob scott was sworn in as the mayor of sioux city. scott broke a record by becoming the longest serving mayor in city history. he has served the past 11 years and his four-year term began today after running unopposed for re-election. scott says his goals surround improving

"it's a great feeling. this is a great community. i love serving in this community so it's an honor and i just feel really blessed," said sioux city mayor, bob scott. council member, dan moore, also took the oath of office this morning as the new mayor pro tempore. moore says he's here to serve the people and he's honored to receive the position. his goals include connecting city trails, looking at the amount of swimming pools, and anything else that is for the greater good. "the goals are to continue on with some of the programs we got going on. economic development is probably at the best that its ever been. we want to continue on that path. again, we want to strive for excellence in what we do. we don't want to just have any development. we want development that's going to be excellent, that's going to be solid, long term what's best for the community," said sioux city mayor pro tem, dan moore. moore says he wants to provide a quality of life the younger generation will appreciate too. councilwoman rhonda capron began her second term with today's swearing in ceremony. she defeated her only challenger, thomas

woodbury county also gained some new leadership today. as the county supervisors' chairman, mark monson, stepped down, jeremy taylor stepped up. taylor officially took the seat of county chairman today, beginning his one-year term. he says he wants to focus on creative solutions for the future. and, says he's looking forward to rolling up his sleeves and getting to work. "really it's coming together to do long term planning, increasing communication among departments. we're spread out in the county and to provide excellent services for people as we budget and really keep the family budget at the heart of each decision that we make," said woodbury county supervisors chairman, jeremy taylor. taylor says his other priority is improving economic development that can spur a greater tax base, job opportunities and increase the quality of life in woodbury county. still to come... the dakota farm show kicks off tomorrow. see what you can expect from

tuesday morning. the wind will pick up tonight into tuesday and temperatures will start to come up some as well with highs on tuesday possibly getting into the low 30s. the middle and latter part with a chance of a little light snow on wednesday and maybe a mix on thursday. our best chances of precipitation will be friday when some light snow is likely. that system pulls out for the weekend but it's looking like it's going to get very cold with highs by sunday and monday only getting into the teens at best.

success this season. at first there was concern that a shortage of bell ringers and the weather might impact this year's drive. the goal this year was $180,000. from the start of the campaign to the day before christmas eve they brought in $194,000. that's $14,000 more and that doesn't include christmas eve. the money will help 540 families children in siouxland. plus, a coat drive provides more than 1,500 coats to keep people warm in the winter. the official total for the season is expected to come out sometime this week. the dakota farm show starts tomorrow and goes until thursday in vermillion, south dakota's dakotadome. the dakota farm show will showcase agricultural products and services, as well as show the latest in farm techonology. attendees can also take advantage of health screenings and receive flu vaccines. brad's here -- it was a very good week for the hawkeye basketball team. iowa beat two ranked teams and have jumped into the top-25,

iowa only has one game this week, against nebraska. the hawkeyes are 11-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. that's eight wins in their last nine games. nebraska is going the other way. the huskers have lost three of their last four and have lost their first two big ten games -- at home, to northwestern and indiana -- putting them at 8-7 overall. iowa is one of five teams that are 2-0 in the conference -- so every game will be a test. iowa and nebraska tipoff at 8 o'clock tuesday on the big ten network. the hawkeyes are into the associated press poll at number-19.

22 in two seasons, with just three wins this year. the eagles parted ways with chip kelly last week. as many as nine nfl teams could have new coaches next season. the dean of sioux city sports reporters has retired. sioux city journal sports editor terry hersom spent his last day at work on new year's eve. a reception was held in his honor at the journal this afternoon, with dozens of colleagues, coaches, family and friends. hersom spent more than 38 years at the journal -- and 46 years in the newspaper siness. through all his work, hersom did a wonderful job of promoting siouxland athletes. "we've had so many accomplished people around here and it's been fun," said hersom. "i would like to think, in the midwest, this is an area that produces achievers and i think sioux city's done their fair share of that and i think we should be proud of that." hersom may still write a column from time to time
