good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm matt breen. (sheila) and i'm sheila brummer. sioux city leaders continue to tread water over which pools to close-- if any. (matt) today, the city council decided to delay a final decision on the pool committee's recommendati on. if that plan had been approved. leeds and cook pools would close after the 2016 season. both facilities would be replaced with a splash pad. riverside would stay the same. lewis pool would close after a new aquatic center is built in morningside. leif erikson would remain open until the pool is no longer operational. at that time it would be replaced with a splash pad. sioux city's parks and rec director says he understands the council's decision. "i wasn't surprised, the council wanted to take a look at where we're at in the cip process before a decision's been made," said sioux city parks and rec dir. matt salvatore. the capital improvement budget

january 23rd. the council plans to approve the budget on march 7th. the city of dakota city, nebraska is one step closer to building a estimated $6.6 million dollar waste water treatment plant. today, the planning and zoning board unanimously survey. that includes plans to acquire an 80-foot, permanent utility easement and a land. the next step is for the city council to approve the plans. the city of sioux city appointed three important new positions this morning. bob scott was sworn in as the mayor of sioux city. scott broke a record by becoming the longest serving mayor in city history. he has served the past 11 years and his four-year term began today after running unopposed for re-election. councilwoman rhonda capron began her second term with today's swearing in ceremony. she defeated her only challenger, thomas venesky, in the election. council member, dan moore, also

(sheila) woodbury county also gained some new leadership today. as the county supervisors' chairman, mark monson, stepped down, jeremy taylor stepped up. taylor officially took the seat of county chairman today, beginning his one-year term. crews searched the area between pender and concord for the missing plane overnight. the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. the name of the pilot has not been released at this time. kenny thomsen, the owner of the farm says he didn't find out about the crash until hours after it happened. "you never know where it's at and this morning, vehicles kept going by the house and highway patrolmen went by," said kenny thomsen, the owner of the farm where the plane crashed. "and i seen- and i knew it had to be close and then when the fog lifted, i could see it." monday, the wayne county sheriff's office and federal aviation administration officials were on scene to investigate. nebraska state troopers were also there to safeguard the area. thomsen says he spoke with an faa official monday. "he said that as soon as talked to a mechanic in wayne, they'd come out with a flat bed and asked if i could help lift it up on there," said thomsen. the ntsb official is planned to arrive on scene tomorrow to begin its investigation. a car that caught fire around 7 p.m. temporarily blocked exit 141 near port neal on i-29. the driver was on his way to winnavegas to drop the passenger off at work. neither of the individuals suffered any injuries. the exit opened back up around 7:40. the woodbury county sheriff's office has identified two women who jumped from a second-story apartment window during a sloan, iowa fire last week. nineteen-year-old alanna gotto and 19-year-old alyssa boggs of both transported to mercy medical center for treatment and released on january 1st. woodbury county sheriff's deputy, todd peterson, was first on the scene and assisted gotto and boggs when they jumped from the apartment building. officials with the sloan fire department said the fire started because of cooking materials left alone.

rural norfolk man who died after falling through the ice on an atv in northeast nebraska. 57-year-old randall simpson reportedly drove an atv onto a rural pond just south of norfolk when the ice broke. it happened shortly after four saturday afternoon. fire officials deployed their ice rescue team. simpson was pronounced dead at a hospital in omaha. the incident remains under investigation. for the third day, armed protesters are occupying buildings on a federal wildlife refuge in rural oregon. law enforcement officials say they're trying to end the standoff quickly and peacefully. the federal wildlife refuge near burns, oregon is occupied by a group of purported militiamen who call themselves citizens for constitutiona l freedom the occupiers say they're supporting two local ranchers, dwight and steven hammond who own land adjacent to the refuge and were sentenced to federal prison for setting public land on fire. the hammond family has said the group does not speak on their behalf and they plan on reporting to prison. the occupiers say they're prepared to stay for months, even years, as the fbi, local and state authorities work to resolve the standoff. president barack obama is moving ahead on plans to require background checks for guns purchased from dealers... even if they're bought online, or at gun shows. the white house is coming out with a series of long-awaited executive steps aimed at curbing gun violence despite opposition in congress to new gun laws. the a-t-f is issuing updated guidance that says the government can consider someone a gun dealer regardless of where the guns are sold. the guidance aims to narrow the gun show loophole. right now, only federally licensed gun dealers must conduct background checks on buyers. the presidential candidate told supporters that no executive action-- including further restrictions on the definition of a gun dealer-- would have have prevented any recent mass shootings. which means last minute campaign stops and phone calls to voters. ktiv's michelle schoening shows us how both sides are getting ready. with just days left until the 2016 iowa caucuses both parties are busy making preparations for february 1st. a way both parties are gearing up for the caucuses is emphasizing early registration. "if you get registered a couple weeks, like now, so that you are on our records that shows who are registered. it just backs up the process when you have a line when we have a line of 100 people trying to register," said kevin alons. chairman of woodbury county republican party. another big preparation...f inding your correct precinct number and location as it could be different than your normal voting one. we are trying to get the word out about our caucus locations and about where and when to go, " said rick mullin, former chairman of woodbury county democrats. candidates are busy making their final stops across the state before caucus night trying to reach as many iowans as they can. "we've had so many accomplished people around here and it's been fun," said hersom. "i would like to think, in the midwest, this is an area that produces achievers and i think sioux city's done their fair share of that and i think we should be proud of

hersom may still write a column from time to time for the journal. the big ten season could not have started better for iowa. the hawkeyes beat then- number one ranked michigan state at home -- and then went on the road to top number-14 purdue. iowa only has one game this week, against nebraska. the hawkeyes are 11-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. that's eight wins in their last nine games. nebraska is going the other way. the huskers have lost three of their last four and have lost their first two big ten games -- at home, to northwestern and indiana -- putting them at 8-7 overall. iowa is one of five teams that are 2-0 in the conference -- and every game will be a test. "they're a very good team. they can put points up," said senior mike gesell.
