suspect, but u.s. marshals in omaha, nebraska, told ktiv that a man wanted by police was involved in an incident on the santee sioux reservation yesterday. 25-year-old david hoffman has been on the run, in northeast nebraska, since tuesday afternoon. that's when he stole a niobrara, nebraska police officer's weapon as the officer tried to arrest him for burglary and theft. he took off on foot. the nebraska state patrol and other agencies joined the search for hoffman as niobrara schools and some businesses were locked down. officers searched cabins and other buildings at niobrara state park, but there was no sign of hoffman. niobrara state park reopened yesterday morning. since then hoffman hadn't been seen... until yesterday afternoon on the santee sioux reservation. an fbi spokesperson has promised additional details will be released on the reservation shooting. but, she didn't say when those details would be released. a teen faces arson charges after a fire that damaged a home in spencer, iowa on tuesday. eighteen-year-old bianca watkins is charged

the home, located at 612 3rd avenue west, ended up with major fire damage to the kitchen and dining area. watkins also faces two counts of animal abuse. in texas, a grand jury has made the decision to indict the state trooper who arrested sandra bland. 28-year-old bland died in her cell last year while in custody of the waller sheriff's office... three days after she was arrested by trooper brian encinia during a traffic stop. encinia was indicted on misdemeanor perjury charges. the grand jury decided last month not to indict jail workers on criminal charges. ethan couch's lawyer says his client is "fine" and that he will be visiting him as much as possible while he's being held in mexico city. fernando benitez is the lawyer for couch, the texas teenager who gained notoriety for his "affluenza" defense in a deadly drunken- driving case. benitez visited couch yesterday at the immigration detention center in mexico city where he is being held.

the united states from mexico, where he was arrested last week after fleeing from the u-s. his lawyer said that things were progressing normally with his legal case. sources said a mexican court granted the 18-year-old a stay against deportation, which could delay his return by weeks or months. north korea is claiming it succesesully detonated a hydrogen bomb. if true, it would mark a huge jump in kim jong un's quest to improve its still-limited nuclear arsenal. but as nbc's bill neely reports, a significant number of analysts are skeptical about the claim.

missouri to help flood victims. the guard announced on new year's eve the troops were on their way to help with water purification and other services. the guard members, who are based in central and northeastern iowa, returned to the state yesterday. a new, kid-friendly siouxland organization that has been in the works for several years is finally coming together. the launchpad children's museum is just wrapping up construction of its new facility in downtown sioux city. workers are still installing exhibits like the "water table," where kids can learn how to harness the power of water. another attraction, called the "construction zone," is an exhibit where kids can learn to use the six simple machines. "everything in here is hands on. we are not a museum in the traditional sense," said the museum's exexutive director, bob fitch. "everything the kids get to touch and feel and manipulate and turn the cranks and move the blocks and they're in charge of everything. it gives them a good idea of how to deal with the real world." the launchpad children's museum

when the candidates can't make it to every corner of iowa, they often send someone in their place, like family members. nats of guns shot republican presidential candidate mike huckabee's wife, janet, stopped by sioux city's "yards shooting range" the meet and greet was part of the huckabees' 150-stops around iowa to lead up to the iowa caucuses on february 1st. huckabee spoke with supporters, and then took some shots in the range. it comes just a day after president obama's announcement that he'll use tighten gun laws. mrs. huckabee agreed that background checks are importanan so they can focus on americans with mental health issues. but, she argued the president's action only hurts current gun owners. "to do what he did, i don't think it is going to have a bearing on the previous shootings, obviously," huckabee said. "i don't think it is going to help those who are going to break the law anyway.it just makes it harder for those who are

a 2014 law blocks south dakota from sharing driver information when collecting a civil fine for an infraction captured on camera. sioux city police chief douglas young has previously said south dakota blocked the private contractor overseeing the cameras from getting the information. but, his department was still able to access it. expect a backup if you're traveling i-29 southbound through sioux city today. southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane for a short distance near the tyson events center while crews do sign work. it's scheduled to last from nine a-m to three p-m. the iowa dot wants to remind drivers to drive with caution and be prepared for traffic backups. california has been hit with rain, wind and snow due to el nino. roads have been closed and buildings damaged while forecasters warn this isn't the last of the severe weather. nbc's dan scheneman reports.

"everything in here is hands on. we are not a museum in the traditional sense," said the museum's executive director, bob fitch. condition this morning after shooting himself when authorities moved in on him. law officers caught up with 25-year-old david hoffman yesterday afternoon on the santee sioux indian reservation. that's when he reportedly turned the gun on himself. hoffman had been the focus on an intense manhunt since tuesday afternoon when a niobrara police officer tried to arrest him on warrants for burglay and theft. authorities say hoffman took the officer's gun, pointed it at the officer, then fled on foot. the wife of republican presidential candidate mike huckabee stumped for her husband yesterday in sioux city. janet huckabee visited the "yards shooting range", where she spoke with supporters and took a few shots. mrs. huckabee says she agrees that background checks are important in registering gun owners, so they can focus on americans with mental health issues. but, she says president obama's executive orders to tighten gun ownership laws only hurt current gun owners. it's the final countdown to opening day of the launchpad children's museum in downtown

a fun tradition that shows off their snow sculpting talents. in the past, connor, trevor, and austin barts have created a giant turtle, a shark, and a walrus. but this year they're building a giant snow octopus in their front yard. the brothers say they've been working on this masterpiece since just before thanksgiving and have put in about 400 hours of work.
