gop candidate rick santorum returned to iowa this weekend. while he has lagging poll numbers, its a position that's not unfamiliar to the fmr. pennsylvania senator. back in 2012, it wasn't until right before the caucus that santorum began to gain momentum. ktiv's michelle schoening joins us live in the newsroom michelle, you spoke one on one with the senator, what he have to say? robert, the former senator talked with me about the importance of getting out and interacting with iowans. and the sub-zero temperatures didn't keep those in the hawkeye state from showing up. more than 70 people attended the house party tonight in sac city. those at the gathering spoke with santorum on issues of national security, faith, and action he would take if elected. the former senator explained the importance of meeting one-on-one caucus. "a lot can happen and the reason don't pay attention to the national polls, they don't pay attention to what the experts say are best for them. they go out and do what these 75-80 people are doing here tonight; which is come out, meet the candidates, and kick the tires," said rick santorum, gop candidate.

tomorrow morning for a town hall at the pizza ranch beginning at 10 am. robert, as you alluded to earlier, the former senator was quick to note that going into the 2012 caucus night santorum was at 3 percent in iowa while newt gingrich was at 34 percent. but, as you said, he ended up winning. from national to state politics, the iowa legislature is expected to tackle k through 12 education and water quality initiatives in the session that begins tomorrow. the democratic- controlled senate and the republican- led house have long been at odds over how much money to spend on education. the 2016 session will likely continue that pattern. ktiv's matt breen is in des moines and will have coverage from the capitol on news 4. it was a cold sunday across siouxland with many of us not getting out of the single digits

investigators are working to determine what caused an explosion and fire that caused extensive damage to a historic downtown omaha building. several witnesses say they smelled natural gas at m's pub shortly before the explosion. one man was seriously injured, yet no one was killed in the fire. the omaha fire chief said today that the fire was essentially out, but crews were still monitoring hot spots for flare ups. the saga of the mexican drug lord known as "el chapo" got more bizarre today, with the release of an interview in rolling stone magazine. the magazine said the mexican drug lord met with actor sean penn and a mexican t-v star at a jungle hideout late last year. n-b-c's gabe gutierrez reports from the prison where el chapo is being held.

responding to questions submitted by sean pean...and mexican soap opera star kate del castillo... after the actors say they secretly met with the drug kingpin... following his daring escape from a maximum security prison last july. "i supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world," "el chapo" is quoted as telling penn. meantime, a trusted source tells nbc news that authorities were aware that penn and del castillo were in mexico to meet with guzman. that raised concerns, because authorities were in the process then of trying to locate and capture el chapo. we reached out to sean penn... but he was unavailable for comment. it wasn't until friday morning...that the mexican navy captured "el chapo" following a bloody shootout in his home state of sinoloa. this is the first look inside the drainage tunnel...where guzman tried to make his last-ditch effort to escape. mexican officials are moving toward extraditing guzman to face drug charges in the u-s...though the process could take months. (sot: mike vigil/ former dea supervisor ) "chapo guzman is gonna be fighting extradition with every resource that he possibly has."
