who the 12 year old boy allegedly showed the handgun to. dr. gausman said the student was searched when he arrived on school property and that's when they found the gun and it was not loaded. "we don't believe in the initial conversations that we had that there was the intent to bring a weapon to school to do harm to that student, to another student, to a staff member, anything like that," said dr. gausman. "again, that doesn't make it any less serious to us." school officials contacted police when they received the information. su "crime prevention officer chad sheehan calls the police department's relationship with the school district, a "good working relationship and used monday's incident as an example." "when the information was obtained, the school district did what needed to be done and took the information immediately to law enforcement," said chad sheehan, crime prevention officer with the sioux city police department. "they didn't sit on any information. they acted very quickly." dr. gausman said an automated phone call was sent to parents of students about the incident around 6 p.m. "we needed to go through all of the steps necessary to make certain that our students and staff members are safe," said dr. gausman. "we needed to get things moving in

he said said the school district has a lot of actions they need to take and there are a number of steps the school district must go through with the student. they will have hearings with the student, many won't happen in public. but until they are over, the student is not allowed on campus.>> sioux city police say the student was taken into juvenile detention and had a hearing this morning. they say the gun belonged to his parents who were unaware he found the combination to where the handgun was stored. authorities in sac county, iowa have now released the name of a man killed in a fire last week. it broke out overnight on friday between the communities of breda and auburn. when fire crews arrived on they found the house had already burned to the ground. the sheriff says 48-year- old daniel robert mielk died because of the fire. foul play isn't suspected. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. after a big cooldown today, we'll see a warmup tomorrow. let's toss it over to chief meteorologist ron demers with more. weather ad-lib there was sun today but there sure wasn't warmth as temperatures were a good 20

do more with programs already in place. still, school funding took center stage. ktiv's matt breen is with "live link 4", at the state captiol in des moines, with a recap. make no mistake, the governor's goal is to increase school funding. but, terry branstad has raised some eyebrows by planning to extend a state sales tax to tie that boost funding for both school frastructure and water quality.

"this is a monumental investment in both education funding and water quality and does it without raising taxes," branstad said. still, some in the governor's own party are skeptical. "i'm uncomfortable changing the direction of the tax, and i'm uncomfortable extending it without the voters saying so," said sen. jason schultz, (r) schleswig others, like john wills, who represents the environmental ly-sensitive iowa great lakes, want to know more about the plan. "i'd be cautiously optimistic," said rep. john wills, (r) spirit lake. "of course, i do want to make sure that we don't do something that the voters back at the counties-- every county approved the save-- but they approved it with 100-percent of the money going to the schools." for educators, and administrator s, the promise of funding beyond the sales tax sunset in 2029 may be too good to pass up. (sheila) thanks matt. today the governor of south dakota laid out his agenda for the year with his state of the state speech. dennis daugaard says lawmakers should pass a half-cent tax increase to improve south dakota's teacher pay. he says doing this would make teacher's pay more competative with neighboring states. the sales tax increase would raise more than 100-million dollars. some of that would be put toward helping raise the state's average teacher

thousand, 500 dollars per year. nebraska gov. pete ricketts says he won't meet with the president on wednesday when he visits omaha. he will send the lt. governor in his place. rickets says he has a scheduling conflict. the governor plans to give his state of the state on thursday. you can watch for coverage of that right here on ktiv. a siouxland community may be getting a facility to help children with behavioral disabilities. ktiv's tommie clark attended a public meeting today in o'brien county and joins us with more tonight. tommie? sheila, at the meeting today the county met with the executive director of seasons center for behavioral health. they're asking county leaders to help them reach their goal of creating a special camp for kids.

serving and their families," said seasons center for behavioral health executive director, kim scorza. as an extension of autumn's center, they're now working to create a therapeutic camp for children. they're seeking a more than half-a- million-dollar grant to purchase property ininutherland, iowa for the facility. and now, o'brien county supervisors are deciding if they want the camp in their county. "i think it's a good thing for the children and i understand the children she's talking about doing. the biggest thing is financial wise, we don't want to all of a sudden have this come back at us," said county supervisor, tom farnsworth. "this is where the therapeutic camp would be located with over 150 acres of land." the land seasons wants used to be mauer manufacturing and it's been vacant for years, but neighbors are still concerned with their own property value if the camp gets put in. at l-s-u. alabama outscored clemson 24-16 in the fourth quarter to win. alabama gets all 61 votes in the final associated press poll. clemson was second, followed by stanford and ohio state. iowa was ninth -- at 12 and 2. the hawkeyes were ranked sixth before losing to stanford in the rose bowl. it's their first top ten ranking at the end of a season since '09. head coach kirk ferentz is ready to turn the page.
