good morning. thanks for joining us on this wednesday, january 13th. breaking news from overseas... the iranian state media reports all 10 detained u-s navy sailors have been freed. this after iran held the sailors aboard two small u-s navy boats yesterday, but assured u-s officials the crew and vessels would be promptly returned. and sioux city school officials have released more information about the sixth grade boy who brought an unloaded gun to north middle school. more on the charges he faces in just a minute. and a therapeutic camp for kids with behavioral issues could be coming to o'brien county. why some are welcoming it in their backyard, but others aren't so sure.

u-s must apologize for its actions. the sailors, nine men and one woman, were held overnight at an iranian base on farsi island in the persian gulf. russia's foreign minister criticized the united states tuesday for pursuing anti-missile defense for south korea after north korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb. sergei lavrov made the comments while meeting with a former japanese foreign minister in moscow. lavrov said russia and china both fear the u-s moves will aggravate tension in the region. north korea claimed last week that it had conducted its fourth nuclear test, this time of a more advanced and powerful hydrogen bomb. but the u-s government and other experts are skeptical about the claim. the test has again raised questions among world powers about what can be done to stop the north's nuclear weapons program. turkish police in the mediterranean city of antalya detained three russian nationals today in a raid on suspected

according to a private turkish news agency, anti- terrorism police conducted the raids a day after an isis suicide bomber detonated a bomb in istanbul's historic sultanahmet district, killing ten foreigners, most of them german tourists. russia's consulate general in ankara confirmed the detention of the trio. the consul general said the suspects were allegedly in contact with isis fighters in conflict zones and had provided logistical support to the militant group. a woodbury county sheriff's deputy is being credited with saving a woman's life. a woman had been reported missing in sioux city two days ago. an investigator tells news 4 was found near moville, iowa next in snow next to her car around 5 p.m. authorities were able to locate the woman through her cell phone signal. her name isn't being released. she was sent to mercy medical center to be treated for hypothermia. the nebraska state patrol investigating a deadly crash

colfax county. deputy dan coughlin from fremont was going east on highway 30 when his car hit a deer carcass near rogers. that's two hours southwest of sioux city his vehicle crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. the deputy had just gotten off work. from fire to ice. there is now ten to 12- inches of ice on the damaged building in omaha's old market district. the crews worked in below freezing temperatures to fight the fire on saturday. the building may be on the verge of collapsing.. and the ice could do more damage as the temperature changes. police say the student accused of bringing a gun to north middle school in sioux city is a sixth grade boy. the student now faces a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. ktiv's tiffany lane has the update.

gausman. police say the call came from parents of a friend, who the 12 year old boy allegedly showed the handgun to. dr. gausman said the student was searched when he arrived on school property and that's when they found the gun and it was not loaded. "we don't believe in the initial conversations that we had that there was the intent to bring a weapon to school to do harm to that student, to another student, to a staff member, anything like that," said dr. gausman. "again, that doesn't make it any less serious to us." school officials contacted police when they received the information. su "crime prevention officer chad sheehan calls the police department's relationship with the school district, a "good working relationship and used monday's incident as an example." "when the information was obtained, the school district did what needed to be done and took the information immediately to law enforcement," said chad sheehan, crime prevention officer with the sioux city police department. "they didn't sit on any information. they acted very quickly." dr. gausman said an automated phone call was sent to parents of students about the incident around 6 p.m. "we needed to go through all of the steps necessary to make certain that our students and staff members are safe," said dr. gausman. "we

the proper direction." he said said the school district has a lot of actions they need to take and there are a number of steps the school district must go through with the student. they will have hearings with the student, many won't happen in public. but until they are over, the student is not allowed on campus. >> sioux city police say the student was taken into juvenile detention and had a hearing yesterday morning. they say the gun belonged to his parents who were unaware he found the combination to where the handgun was stored. colorado's attorney general honored the first responders and law enforcement officers who rose to the call of duty during a november shooting at a planned parenthood clinic. cynthia coffman thanked the individuals that stood between an act of evil and their community. robert dear junior stormed a colorado springs planned parenthood where he allegedly shot and killed three people on november 27-th. he also injured 12 others before he surrendered to authorities following a five-hour standoff. the first responders received an

attorney general. coffman says each man and woman responded heroically to an emergency call, not only because it was part of their job, but because of their inherent sense of duty. parenting in a digital world was the target of a talk last night at south sioux city middle school. the presentation showed parents how to take charge of their kids' online activity. an education lawyer stressed that parents need to be both active and educated about their children's social media sites. "you need to be on the exact same platform as your kids are. i tell parents it's kind of like you want to live in the same town as your kid. your kid wouldn't move to lincoln and you stay in south sioux city so you want to be living in the same place as your kids are online as well. a siouxland community may be getting a camp to help kids with behavioral issues. o'brien county held a public meeting yesterday, led by the executive director of seasons for behavioral health. ktiv's tommie clark attended

purchase property in sutherland, iowa for the facility. and now, o'brien county supervisors are deciding if they want the camp in their county. "i think it's a good thing for the children and i understand the children she's talking about doing. the biggest thing is financial wise, we don't want to all of a sudden have this come back at us," said county supervisor, tom farnsworth. "this is where the therapeutic camp would be located with over 150 acres of land." the land seasons wants used to be mauer manufacturing and it's been vacant for years, but neighbors are still concerned with their own property value if the camp gets put in. "makes us a little nervous, like i say i'm not against what they do i just wish it was in a different location. if it goes through there won't be any hard feelings or anything. i've met with kim and we'll be able to work together and try to be neighborly," said neighbor, mark shriver. the camp would include a rock climbing wall, lake activities and an intensive skill development program for kids in need. a need seasons wants the county to allow them to take care of by approving the grant to build the facility. "we've heard loud and clear from our communities. we've heard loud and clear from our families and our kiddos that they want to have this happen so regardless if it doesn't happen here, which of course we would be dissapointed and sad, it will be happening we will continue to move forward with it because it's the right

attorney general loretta lynch will visit a boston jail today to discuss the obama administration's work on reforming the criminal justice system. lynch's visit to the suffolk county house of correction comes a day after the president's final state of the union address. during the visit, the attorney general will meet with local leaders of a couple of programs that aim to prepare people for their return to society. later in the day, lynch will visit harvard law school where she will deliver remarks on criminal justice and re-entry services. hillary clinton's campaign stance on behalf of gun reform was boosted as she was endorsed by the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. and clinton used the event at iowa state university to ramp up her criticism of democratic rival bernie sanders. clinton tried to turn the tables on senator sanders' claim that he battles special interests.. by arguing he has backed the gun lobby in multiple votes.

from an attorney. but jeana goosmann says there's more to getting a big check than you t think. "you want to make sure you claim your prize properly," said jeana goosmann. "there are a lot of rules involved in the game and certain ways you have to fill out those forms." on top of figuring out where you plan to stash all that money. an estimated $930 million dollar lump-sum if you choose that. "you're going to want to make sure that you have a solid financial plan put in place and some assest protection vehicles for you [and] for those winnings," said jeana goosmann. "especially with the amount of money that we're talking about right now." one of those vehicles goosman says is a south dakota domestic asset protection trust. she says it would protect you from tricky situations. "you don't want people running out in front of your car to get run over because they know you have a lot of money because you're a winner," said jeana goosmann. maybe the biggest dilemma: take the lump-sum or annuity payments? "for most people, i would recommend the lump-sum option because you have the certainty that you're getting all of the money.," said jeana goosmann. a

diesel emissions scandal. on tuesday the e-p-a, and california regulators rejected a recall proposal submitted by v-w last month. the california air resources board said in a statement released tuesday that the proposal contained gaps and lacked sufficient detail... and went further... issuing 13 violations. the e-p-a released its own statement tuesday, saying in part quote "volkswagen has not submitted an approvable recall to bring the vehicles into compliance and reduce pollution." the scandal using software to cheat emission tests involves over a half- million vehicles in the u.s., from model years 2009 to 2015. an arizona starbucks employee has come up with a special way to share america's love of coffee this valentine's day. tony aguilar has created three new frappuccinos for customers to try on february 14th. the first offering is called "the valentine frappuccino." it has strawberries and cream with raspberry at the bottom...

county sheriff's deputy. dan coughlin of fremont was killed after his car hit a deer carcass on highway 30 near rogers then crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. coughlin had just gotten off work when that accident happened. a woodbury county sheriff's deputy is being credited with saving a woman's life. the woman had been reported missing in sioux city two days ago. an investigator tells news 4 she was found near moville, iowa next in the snow next to her car around 5 yesterday afternoon. authorities were able to locate the woman through her cell phone signal. her name isn't being released. she was taken to mercy medical center and was treated for hypothermia. turkish police in the mediterranean city of antalya detained three russian nationals today in a raid on suspected isis militants. according to a private turkish news agency, anti- terrorism police conducted the raids a day after an isis suicide bomber detonated a bomb in istanbul's historic sultanahmet

came from parents of a friend, who the 12 year old boy allegedly showed the handgun to. dr. gausman said the student was searched when he arrived on school property and that's when they found the gun and it was not loaded. "we don't believe in the initial conversations that we had that there was the intent to bring a weapon to school to do harm to that student, to another student, to a staff member, anything like that," said dr. gausman. "again, that doesn't make it any less serious to us." school officials contacted police when they received the information. su "crime prevention officer chad sheehan calls the police department's relationship with the school district, a "good working relationship and used monday's incident as an example." "when the information was obtained, the school district did what needed to be done and took the information immediately to law enforcement," said chad sheehan, crime prevention officer with the sioux city police department. "they didn't sit on any information. they acted very quickly." dr. gausman said an automated phone call was sent to parents of students about the incident around 6 p.m. "we needed to go through all of the steps necessary to make certain that our students and staff members are safe," said dr. gausman. "we needed to get things moving in the proper direction." he said said the school district has a lot of actions they need to take and there are a number of steps the school district must go through with the student. they will have hearings with the student, many won't happen in public.

resolutions to lose weight or to be healthier. and, a lot of them get hung up on snacking. should they snack. or, not snack and what should they choose? it's the number one question i get in emails is about snacking. i'm a big fan of snacking on. not all of the can use the same eating plan. i am definately a three meal, two snack kind of girl. some, are 6 meals. it's important to plan your snacks like you would your meals. so, alot of time people get in trouble because they don't plan their snacks and then they get hungry and head to the vending machine. sheila: then they eat everything they can get ahold of. whitney: yes, the chips and candy to satifsy their hunger and cravings. you need to plan your snacks like your meals. i actually eat the same snacks every day. so, it's something you don't have to be overcreative for and whatever fits in with your lifesytle. let's start with liquid calories. a lot of people hit the vending and they start drinking. but, it's a lot of empty calories. you don't get a lot of nutricial value with the drinks. so, all the calories go right to your waistline. so, look for things that are low calorie or calorie free. but, always of course trying to drink more water. all of us could always use more water so try and get more water in your day helps you make you full. sheila: how much water? whitney: i would say at least 8 glasses a day. but, i usually drink double that. i drink a lot of water during the day. but, most people could afford to drink more. so, when you're planning your snacks to eat throughout the

least 2 foot groups. because then you get a nice balance of a protein and carb. the protein will keep you full and the carbohydrates will give you energy. and, try to have fiber to try and keep you full. but, it's not rocket science. just try and have those two food groups to try and balance things out. so, when i plan a snack i try to do an apple and a string cheese. two food groups. then, i get the protein and the carbs and the fiber as well.sheila: you have some examples here. whitney: yes, i have tradition ants on a log, some luncheon meat, try to have a fruit and a vegetable. that way you can try and get your 5 to 9 servings a day. sheila: and, here's some packs of tuna. whitney: yes, and i find things that you traditionally do for breakfast work really well for snacks too. these oatmeal packages are not just breakfast anymore. they can go with with you very easily nowdays. sheila: great tips, thank you so much whitney, and make sure you drink the water too. if you would like more information about today's centsable health

kids with behavioral issues. officials in o'brien county are considering a plan for a new kids camp in sutherland. ktiv's tommie clark has the details.

for behavioral health executive director, kim scorza. as an extension of autumn's center, they're now working to create a therapeutic camp for children. they're seeking a more than half-a- million-dollar grant to purchase property in sutherland, iowa for the facility. and now, o'brien county supervisors are deciding if they want the camp in their county. "i think it's a good thing for the children and i understand the children she's talking about doing. the biggest thing is financial wise, we don't want to all of a sudden have this come back at us," said county supervisor, tom farnsworth. "this is where the therapeutic camp would be located with over 150 acres of land." the land seasons wants used to be mauer manufacturing and it's been vacant for years, but neighbors are still concerned with their own property value if the camp gets put in. "makes us a little nervous, like i say i'm not against what they do i just wish it was in a different location. if it goes through there won't be any hard feelings or anything. i've met with kim and we'll be able to work together and try to be neighborly,"

a couple of furry felines proved that opposites really do in fact attract. a siberian tiger cub and an african lion cub are being raised as sisters at six flags great adventure in central new jersey. the two typically would never meet in the wild... but folks are wild over their pairing.... and the tiny cubs appear to agree. both were delivered to first-time mothers who failed to care for them, so veterinarians stepped in and the two are being raised together.
