the dubuque, iowa karate club is now a few months into their jedi training. it was the original star wars movie, released nearly 40 years ago, that inspired this unique training course. brad hanson from our sister station in waterloo got a chance to see this training first hand.

i wanted to be a jedi." schmitt was crushed when he found out jedi's weren't real. but he soon started a decades long journey with martial arts--includin g running a weapon's academy. schmitt was determined to merge his two passions into a very real class. "as a kid, i would've given anything to join a jedi training academy or lightsaber academy, but there wasn't really anythinin around. so i thought, you know, i'm going to look into starting my own." his mission to find a cure for cancer today. at tuesday night's state of the union address president obama tapped joe biden to head an effort to work on curing cancer. in october, biden called for a "moonshot" to cure cancer. today biden will be in philadelphia to participate in a roundtable discussion at the university of pennsylvania's perelman school of medicine.... it's a personal cause for mister biden, of cour, after his son, beau, died of brain cancer last year. after taking office last year, nebraska governor pete ricketts vowed to make property tax relief a priority. it's a theme that continued delivered his second state of ktiv's robert lowe has more from lincoln, nebraska.

"agriculture is our number one industry here in nebraska, representing nearly 25 percent of our state's economy," said nebraska gov. pete ricketts "while farm incomes are subject to variations and flucuations each year, property taxes go up and up." part of the plan aims to slash agricultural land valuations. for example, cutting a projected 6.8 percent increase in 2016 for northeast, nebraska--dow n to 1.7 percent. "every farmer, every farmowner pays that tax every year whether you make money or not," said state sen. dave bloomfield from hoskins. another portion of the package includes tightening local government spending limits. "he's(gov. rickett's) has basically looked at the entire realm of services me must have and those we'd like to have," said sen. lydia brasch, bancroft, ne. but, the gov. didn't stop with property tax relief. ricketts is also asking lawmakers to approve using $150 million of the state's cash reserve to improve infrastructure. that'll possibly drive forward

al? thanks, sarah here's a look at some of the stories making headlines this friday morning in siouxland. governor pete ricketts is urging nebraska lawmakers to pass bills to slow the statewide growth in property taxes. after delivering his second "state of the state" address to the legislature thursday morning, ricketts hit the road to sell his ideas to nebraskans. he outlined his proposals at this stop in south sioux city. he also touted nebraska's unemployment rate of 2.9 percent, which is the second lowest in the country. ricketts also wants lawmakers to

under the federal health care law. the sioux city's education association is asking for a six-percent pay raise for salaried teachers. it's a starting point in negotiations with the public school district. the teachers' union is also asking for smaller class sizes, which would require the district to hire more teachers. the school board will review the proposal, and present the district's initial offer on january 28th. after that, the two sides will hold private negotiations to reach a contract. and bryon stewart collects his check. the onawa, iowa man won two-million dollars in this week's record 1-point-6 bilion dollar powerball game. stewart matched the first five numbers but not the powerball, and he added the "power play" which doubled his prize to two-million. stewart bought three tickets from casey's store in onawa, where word of his win traveled quickly thursday. after taxes, he's taking home 1-point-4 million dollars. stewart, who is 23, says he'll pay off some loans, but he plans to keep his job.
