getting your finances in order can be a lot like losing weight.... both take time, hard work and small changes can make a big difference. committing t tsome positive steps in january could make 2016 the best year ever. bob hansen shares two ideas you can start right now.
5:13 am
(nats) no matter who you are, january is a great time to review your finances. (sot: mary beth storjohann, certified financial planner) "this time of year is the time to basically set yourself up and fix things that you maybe messed up the previous year." and where do you start? financial planner mary beth storjohann says start the year by checking your credit score. (sot: mary beth storjohann, certified financial planner) "your credit report is basically your financial report card but there's no getting rid of it after college. so knowing this number and how it impacts you is a great way to kick off the year." you can get a free report every year from each of the credit reporting agencies by going to annual credit report dot com. to get your score you'll have to pay about 12 dollars, but the information is critical to understanding how you measure up on your finances. (sot: mary beth storjrjann, certified financial planner) "doing a debt inventory, ununrstanding the balances that you owe, the interest rates on them and the minimum payments due." (reporter stand up: bob hansen) "of course building up your savings account is critical for the new year. but maybe you need more than just one account."
5:14 am
"so i always say if you have separate goals, have separate savings accounts." mary beth has 9 different savings accounts, most with online banks. she contributes separate amounts to each account every month, each one divided by needs from insurance to travel, from emergencies to down payments. (sot: mary beth storjohann, certified financial planner) "the problem is when everything is in one account it's way easier to dip in for every little expense. if you want a new laptop, oh that's coming from the ssvings account. . f you need new tires on the car, that's coming from the savings account. realistically those are things that should have separate savings accounts." >> that was bob hansen reporting. coming up next on news 4 today... decades after a terrible murder took place, a witness is speaking out. she's doing it through a new book by a sioux city couple. it's shedding light on the heinious crime that took place at a state park in

just find a lot of people, they think salad, they think chicken, so we are going to make it with a flank steak today, and i have adaded barley to it, which if you hahae never made barley, i use a quick cooking one, it takes like 10 minutes. it's a really good way to kind of bulk up your salad. if you want to stretch your dollar a little bit, i also added mushrooms, that's a nice way to also stretch your dollar a little bit more." s- "oh yeah it does have some protein in there." w- "yeah, you get a little protein and a good dose of fiber, too. so i think that's just a nice way to make your salad just a little bit more satisfying. so, for the steak part of it, um, i know we probably don't want to go outside to our grill right now, so i'm broiling a flank steak, and flank steaks work perfect to broil. you can't throw just any steak under the broiler. some just don't work very well. but this is what a flank steak looks like. in total, this is only going to take 10 to 11 minutes broiled on high. so i usually season it, put it in there for about 6 minutes on the first side, flip it over, 5 more minutes and you're done.what you want to make sure you're doing is letting it rest for a couple of minutes before you slice it and put it on your salad. and you'll notice that this piece of meat, it has a very strong grain running vertically through it, so when you go to slice it, make sure you're cutting across the ain this wwy, and that's actually what you want o do
6:04 am
across the grain, not with the grain, otherwise what you're going to end up doing is spending half of your dinner time chewing, and trying to pull it out of your teeth exactly. so you want to always slice against the grain, and that's why this piece works so perfectly for broiling, because it doesn't seize up a bunch under the broiler, so it stays nice and tender, and then when you can cut it across that grain, it makes it even more tender. so, we've heard that a lot from our meat experts that we've had on, and this is the perfect cut for that." s- "is it hard to find that cut?" w- "it is n-, i have not had a hard time findii this cut. my storeecarries it all the time. if you can't find it, just ask your meat experts for it, and they can be able to go cut one for you, or yeah they can maybe locate one for you, maybe go back the next day and get it. they're more than happy to help yu find it, but it is one of my favorite cuts of meat, especially in the winter cuz, like i said, it works perfect under the broiler and you don't have to go outside." s- "and it's good and lean." w- "yes, it's a nice, lean protein source for you." s- "have you been keeping up on your resolutions?" w- "you know, i actually didn't make any." s- "see, that's what you need to do, right?" w- "i actually didn't make any, but for those of you that did, i hope you're still going strong." s- "alright, welel thank you whitney. if you'd like more information about today's centsable health, or any centsable health topic, go to k-t-i-v dot com and just look
