5:04 am
and it was the best thing i ever did. >> announcer: now let's join lifelock member tom joden to learn more about identity theft, the fastest growing crime in america. with tom is former fbi agent and renowned speaker jeff lanza, an expert in fraud, cyber crime, and identity theft. >> jeff, thanks for being here. >> you're weweome. >> you know, 10 yeyes ago, i didn't even think ababt identity theft, but then, unfortunately, i became a victim. and now we hear that it's the fastest growing crime in america. why is that? >> a couple of reasons why it's the fastest growing crime in america -- number one, it's easy to commit, and the bad guys know that. the second reason is, it's very lucrative. so once they get your information, especially your social security number, then it's easy to convert that into cash, to monetize that information. and once that happens, the victim is left with a lot of problems. >> i think most people think if they have a problem, their bank or credit card company will just take care of it for them, right?
5:05 am
if the problem is credit card fraud, someone used your existing credit card numder or cloned your card, yeah, the bank will take care of that. but that's just one part of the problem of identity theft. there's a much broader problem, and that is when someone steals your identity entirely. they've got your i.d., they've got your social security number, they apply for these accounts in your name. you don't even know it's happening. you may not figure it out until you get a call from a bill collector, a credit card company that says you're past due on a credit card that you don't even know you had. >> so when you're on your own, you're kind of just blind that this is happeninin'cause there's no one out therereooking out for you. >> that's exactly right. you know, we have our jobs, we have our family, we have our life. do you want to take hours out of your day, maybe for days and weeks at a time, to try to gure out how to corrqct the problems that the identity thief caused? if you were gonna do all that, i don't know how much time it would take or even where you would begin to do that. you don't have the technology to do that. >> so, in general, the advice you would give -- what can we do to protect ourselves? >> the earlier identity theft gets detected, the sooner you
5:06 am
it from getting worse, and that's where lifelock comes in. they deal with this every day. >> when jennifer learned a fraudulent account was opened in her name, she thought she could easily deal with it on her own. >> so herere am trying to call d prove that i'm the real nnifer, and they jususdon't believe me. i probably talked to six or seven people. each time i'd have to repeat my story. "i did not sign up for this credit card. i don't owe you any money." that person says, "well, i can't help you, but let me transfer you to this person," and it's just so aggravating. it's like, "just send me to the right peon." i almost got to the point where i was like, "let me pay for this $400 and just close the account and let's be done," but the thing is, there were other credit cards out there. you just don't know how deep it goes. when my lifelock agent got involved, somehow she knew exactly who to talk to. i never figured out that, but she knew exactly who to talk to. and she helped me take care of it. >> we work, shop, even pay bills almost anywhere. it's great, but it can also make us more vulnerable to identity theft.
5:07 am
like a hacker. he's been featured on investigative reports revealing where we're ththmost vulnerable to c cer crime. >> no one thinks they're gonna fall v vtim to identity theft, but check this out. in a caf\ like this, you know, people have this idea that they're safe when they're online. they feel it's being provided by the local caf\ here, so it should be safe. the reality is, though, that something like this -- this is a wi-fi device -- can be brought to a local caf\, set up right he in front of people without them even knowing it, and instead of them connecting to the wi-fi in the organization, they'll be connecting to this wi-fi device instead. what if they type in login credentials? i've got them. if they type in a password, i've got it. if they type in credit card information, i'll get that, as well. all of this information can be captured by the criminal, and then they can use that information to commit identity theft. i do these scams to show people what's going on out there. criminals are continually finding new ways to rip people off. and the bottom line is, you need

>> it's something that's out of control. i can't protect my identity all the time with everything that i do. bad people are gonna get your information whether you want them to or not. i have really a teammate in lifelock knowing that they're keeping an eye out for things, things that i couldn't do myself, and having them on my side, and it really is that [sighs] i can just relax and take one worry off my plate. >> the technology behind cyber crime is extensive, but what about lifelock's technology to protect you? well, dr. stephen coggeshall, lifelock's chief analytics and science officer, is here to explain how lifelock's proprietary technology is helping fight identity fraud. dr. coggeshall, thanks for being here. >> my pleasure. >> tell me about lifelock's proprietary technology. >> well, we do a variety of things. and what we do is really cool. we go to our more than a trillion data elements in our data bank. we'll look at all the other things it's connected to in the world, all the other applications we see, we look at what's going on at the address,
5:13 am
social security number, is there something strange about that e-mail? and we gather all that information together and put it through some pretty complicated mathematical formulas, and we come up with a probability score, the likelihood that that's a fraud attempt. >> and then you alert me as a lifelock customer if you see something out of the ordinary? >> that's correct. if a member gets an alert, they have the opportunity to say, "oh, yeah, that's me." but if it's not them, if they're sitting home watching tv and they get one of these alerts, they can press a button and contact lifelock, and we start the process of shutting that fraud attempt down. lifelock started from the very beginning specifically to protect our members from identity fraud. that's our reason for existence. >> my cellphone goes off at just past 6:00 a.m. and it's a text alert from lifelock. someone attempted to use my name and social security number to open a credit card. they filled out an application online with a $10,000 limit. lifelock caught it, notified me, and we were able to stop that credit card from ever being
5:14 am
early enough in the processing phase. >> when your identity's been stolen, you want a knowledgeable, trusted friend on your side to get you out of the mess, and this is the big difference between monitoring your own credit and lifelock. a lifelock membership means you have a whole team of identity-protection agents ready to watch for threats to your identity, to answer your questions, and to help resolve identity-theft problems. lifelock members like me get a dedicated agent based right here in the u.s. to help resolve any threats to your identity. meet identity-protection agents daniel, pua, and sarah. they're part of a team of agents who address identity threats and help lifelock members if an identity theft occurs. what happens when a member gets an alert? i mean, when do you get involved, and how does that work? >> once our members notify us that it was not them, that they believe it's identity theft, is when we get started. then you'll speak to somebody like me, and i'll call you and i'll assist you through the whole process. >> we know who to call, what documents are needed, and we get it done much quicker than a
5:15 am
>> i know the questions to ask, i know the people to talk to, i know the numbers to call, and i can make it just so much easier for you. and i'm also willing to stay on hold for you if you need. >> wait a minute. say that again? >> yeah, i'm willing to stay on hold as long as it takes on your behalf if necessary. >> 'cause that is the worst part -- staying on hold. >> it is. [ chuckles ] but i'm happy to do it. >> you're happy to do it? >> yes. i am. >> now, sarah, i know that you are a veteran. you, i assume, work with a lot of veterans and people in the armed services. >> i do. up until a couple years ago, social security number was on identification cards. it's sad that people fighting for our country have to worry about that, but we are more than happy to help and see them through it, to carry the burden, and that way they can focus on the mission, and that's why i love what we do. >> and when you go home, sarah, at the end of the day, what makes you say, "that was a good day"? >> i love when i close a case. i love it.
5:16 am
can't wait to call my member, it really is just gratifying knowing that taking the burden and helping them through the process and being able to make that phone call, "hey, your case is closed" is priceless. i love it. >> what's impressed me most about lifelock is they're also gonna be there to help you afterwards if something happens. the credit monitoring agencies, they're just gonna go, "no, you had an issue. it's on you." whereas lifelock says, "let us help you." >> every single time the lifelock agent, if we've had to stay on the phone too long with the other company, the agent will always say, "let me take this, angela. i'll call you back when i get them back." and i just feel like they respected my time and me. >> they know everything that there's no way i could know. i don't have to think about, "how do i fix this?" i turn it over to lifelock, and they'll help me. >> announcer: identity theft is the fastest growing crime in america. are you at risk? you could be if you bank or shop

5:20 am
you're nearly 6 times more likely to be a victim of identity fraud than those who are not notified. and once your information is out there, it's out of your control. that's why you need protection. >> you know, i've always heard of these data breaches at retailers. you always think it doesn't happen to you. and it did. my information, as well as that of many others, had been breached during a christmas shopping season by this major retailer. and that's when i said, "i have to protect my family." i called lifelock. it was so simple, and i actually was kicking myself that i didn't do it earlier. sometimes i even like hearing the ding, knowing there's an alert. lifelock makes me feel safe knowing someone is concerned about my future and that of my children. >> you know, jeff, last time i was part of a data breach, i got this letter, and they offered me identity-theft protection. i mean, what do you think about that from the company that just got breached? >> well, by the time you got the letter, it's already days or weeks have gone by since the
5:21 am
happened, and they don't usually realize it's happened until well after the breach has occurred. so the point is, it's too late. i mean, you've already had your information out there. it could already be a big problem. the point of identity-theft protection is being proactive. that's what lifelock does. it helps you figure out if someone's trying to steal your identity, and then if it does happen, they help to resolve it. >> i went to the doctor, and they told me -- i got a letter that there was a breach and that my information may have been compromised. i was very relieved that i had already signed up for lifelock. >> so, here's one scam that criminals will do. they'll buy an 800 phone number, which will actually forward to their cellphone, and then they'll call up and leave a voicemail to you telling you there's a problem with your banking account. they'll leave that 800 number in hopes that you'll call them back. so you should have received a security i.d. when you got your voicemail. so, once they answer the phone, the first thing they're gonna want to do is they're gonna want to verify that you are who you say you are. for security purposes, i just need to verify your social security number. people are very used to that, so
5:22 am
security number is" whatever it is, and just like that, they have that before people even have a chance to think, "maybe i shouldn't have given that out." yeah, no problem at all. you have a great day. thank you. bye-bye. and just like that, we have her social security number. >> protecting your identity is a smart financial move. personal finance expert, best-selling author, and journalist lynnette khalfani-cox helps her clients with their financial portfolios. here's what she had to say about identity-theft protection. >> you might be doing a lot of things right. you might be saving, planning for the future, investing. all of those things are great. but if you haven't taken time to protect yourself against the risks that are out there, the very real risk of identity theft, then you haven't really secured your family's finances in a way that's smart. identity theft is a threat to your financial wellbeing because it not only affects your credit rating and impacts your ability to get loans, it could also hamper you in everyday life, and doing things like renting an apartment, getting a

but you only have one identity. you're not gonna be able to replace it. so protect it with the best. >> when your identity is stolen, you just feel so violated and just so helpless. but knowing that you have lifelock, it just -- you have this whole team of people on your side, and you know that you don't have to go it alone. >> we feel protected, and we feel like there's almost like a blanket of security around us. >> it's just really great to know that they are there and we can call on them whenever we need it. >> i would compare lifelock to having that big older brother walking side by side with you on the first day of school so that everyone knows "don't mess with him." >> choosing lifelock to protect our identity was one of the best decisions we've ever made. >> this is financial protection that you can't afford not to have. it's kind of like the people who say to me, "uh, i'm too cash-strapped and i can't afford to save." i say, "you can't afford not to save."

6:18 am

6:21 am
i walk away and look at myself, and i just can't believe that's me in the mirror. it looks like a -- i look like a different person. i'm overall just more energetic. i feel like i can do a million things a day instead of wanting to take a nap ininhe middle of the afternoon. i was told recently that i looked hot, and i hadn't been told that in a while. 6:23 am
you're gonna go off your diet. all you have to do in the morning is say, "this is what i want. i want this," and then you're done. and they do all the work. it's fantastic. -it sure is. -yeah.h. -thank you. -all right, who else has a question for marie? yes, you in the purple. -hi, marie. -hi. my name's renee. my question is, is i'm 54 years old, and i've already been through thchange. all my life i've never had to deal with weight gain. d then, all of a sududn, boom, it hits. it just seems like you're fighting it all the time, and you're losing the fight. but what i want to know, is this nutrisystem something that you can really combat mother nature? yes, and it helps while your hormones are doing all those crazy y ings. and so, when you're having one of those horrible hot flashes, you can stand there and say, "hey, but i look hot." good morning everybody and welcome to the balancing act. we're so glad you joined us. i'm julie moran. and i'm olga villaverde. alright, are you triple threat, julie? how about a quadruple threat? maybe a triple. i dodot know about a quad. not me. but today we're about to meet some as we continue our broadway balances america series, going behind the scenes of broadways's best shows as they travel across the country. so much fun. i love this one. life is a...cabaret, baby! as we introduce you to some of the talented cast from e tony award winning production of cabaret directed by sam mendes and rob marshall we'll enter into the world of the infamous kit kat club and see how they prepare for such a demanding role that has them acting, singing, dancing, and playing an instrument. what talent! okay, and if sometimes it feels like you're tap dancing with your goals. love that. you knowowand new years resosotions. we've got you covered. we've got some life coaching solutions. plus, some

day. i think it's time to raise the curtain and start the show. the balancing act starts... right now. (in unison) life is a cabaret! (music). (music). month? well, today we're taking a bit of a closer look at why setting dreams, goals, and resolutions is not only healthy but necessary. here's olga. it's the end of january. how's your new years resolution coming? well, if your answer is "bah humbug," let's take a closer look at goal setting and let's start t hearing what some of you had to say. hohos that new
6:30 am
does not go so well. they're going pretty good. we volunteer at several places and we enjoy being able to give back. stay happy, healthy, concentrate on my family. finish my degree and get a betttt job. sorry. great stuff this morning, , d joining us now to get an even better handle on how to successfully set -- successfully set -- and achieve our resolutions and goals is our resident life coach doctor, jessica leon. good morning. good morning. i'm so happy to be here. a new year! yes, glad to have you here. why is it a good thing to set goals? well, i think resolutions and goals first need to be defined. we know that resolution is being able to solve problems and go through things, and we know that goals are something that we set and we look forward to. so, when we have something that gives us longterm motivation and short-term vision, what we're able to do is we're able to put our priorities in order. we can
6:31 am
that when we're doing all of these things, they give us a sense of confidence and our self-esteem. so, the more that we set and the more that we are successful, the better our self-esteem goes up and up. and so then we are much more likely to have better judgements in life and continue to set goals for ourselves. now why do we do this at the beginning of a new year? i mean, shouldn't it be done all year long? i think what happens is people get so caught up in new year's resolution. new year. new you! so, exactly. that's our motto here. and we all, while we can still have a new year and a new you, what's really important is looking at how important goal setting is on a regular basis. so, when we set daily intentions, it gives us a practice of setting these goals. so, when it's time to join the tradition and go ahead and set a new year's resolution goal, you already have set up a sense of practice for yourself and successes so that you're much more likely to be successful during that new year's resolution that you set. and what do you tell to people that say, "you know, i'm not even going to set a goal.
6:32 am
goals." what do you say? you know, i think the biggest problem with people is really their interpretation of failure. so, that internal dialog is huge in what do they see as a mistake in failure. so, being able to really re-examine exactly what failure means. so, it's going into it saying, "i'm not going to be perfect going into this goal." but i'm going to try. exactly. and so just trying makes all the difference in the world to at least say, "okay, well i did this and this didn't work." now you have something new to be able to try differently. the other thing i think is so important is that when people set goals, they forget about two really important pieces. the first one is the accountability. it is so important when we can put ourselves accountable, whether it's through putting it out in public, whether it's being competitive with somebody, whether it's making a bet. but we know that whenever we hold ourselves accountable, we are much more likely to comply with different things. in addition to that, the visual piece i think is what's missing from a lot of people. so when you have something right there in front
6:33 am
checkoff system that you completed it. something more tangible. much more tangible. marbles in a jar, pounds to lose, pounds lost. anything that you can do that represents some sort of visual way to stay accountable, i think that also is the necessary ingredient for you to follow through into that successful goal. so, when it comes to new year's resolutions, what are the most popular that really never get achieved. well, i think what happens is people get so gung ho, which is wonderful, they get so excited and they take on one of the most difficult challenging goals which is addictive behavior. and to undo a habit that you're so used to requires a lot of help. it requires a support system. it requires a plan. and people don't often put everything that's involved in that plan and support system that they need to accomplish that goal. so sometimes even getting professional help along with a goal that requires much more attention into the underlying root of some of those addictive behaviors is also something
6:34 am
you've got to set something more realistic. yeah. small and achievable is much more realistic for somebody than the whole entire year that they're looking that they're going to accomplish something that was an addict-type behavior. mine was, "okay, i'm going to learn to relax more." (laughter). but, you know, and so start off with the smallest piece that maybe in the car, you'll start to relax a little bit differently by maybe incorporating some smells, maybe some peppermint oil or some lavender oil. maybe the sounds that you listen to. you can have any goal you want, but starting so small and with the most achievable way so that you feel successful. thank you very much for your tips. what was yours by the way? my resolution is to be able to have, to engage in, a lot more meditation for myself. okay, see the relaxing part. yes. i'll get there one day. thank you, doctor, appreciate your time. and for all these great tips on goal setting, just log onto thebalancingact.com (music). up next, if anyone knows how to dream big and overcome the fear of failure, it's our next guests. it's hard

they travel across the country and into your local theatre. roundabout theatre company's tony award winning production of cabaret, directed by sam mendes and rob marshall is hitting the road and taking audiences into the infamous and sedsuctive kit kat club during a pre-world war ii germany where the mc, sally bowles, and a ruckus ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd and to leave their troubles outside. and for the talented quadruple threats of the kit kat girls and boys who make up the ensemble of the production, prepping for a rigorous touring schedule takes balance to excel in all four disciplines. as balancing act correspondent, amber milt, learned when she got a preview of their acting, singing, dancing, and musical abilities. so together we say, "come hear the music play!" that's right, baby. here we go.

actors are part of the roundabout theatre company's 50th anniversary season which includes the national tour of the tony award winning musical, cabaret. (music). rehearsal is in full swing as the performers get final notes from choreographer, cynthia onrubia. being part of the kit kat club ensembles means they must be able to sing, dance, act, and play a musical instrument. you want diversity, but it all has to come together musically. i want to keep a certain standard of the show because once you set the tone, and especially me, i won't settle for anything less. (singing) the numbers are hugely important to the show partly because they drive the show in

numbers intersect with the scenes. they propel the themes of the show. the abrasion between the scenes which fire in and the songs that fire out that give the show its unique energy. (singing) the story, which first debuted on broadway 50 years ago, takes audiences into the seductive kit kat club during pre-world war ii germany. berlin is thriving but everything is about to change. it's what happens to sally bowles, who is a chanteuse, and cliff bradshaw, an american writer, and their romance. and how history intersects with that romance. their romance and also the romance of an older couple, fraulein schneider and herr schultz. and of course there's the character, the mc, which is maybe perhaps the most famous character in the show. and he comes in throughout the evening and does fantastic numbers that illuminate and expand upon the

tough situation in history and adds light to it from the characters, from what they're going through. the dancing is pretty surreal. the way that the story is told is so innovative and so timeless to all the audiences that get to see it. this sam mendes rob marshall production features the music of kander and ebb, the team behind chicago, and it all starts with casting. kit kat boys and girls are also the orchestra. there is that extra element of musicianship that comes into play. it's finding the people who can also wail on a saxophone and sing and dance and act. that is where it becomes tricky. as a quadruple threat, dani spieler who plays lulu can definitely wail on the

started working on willkommen and don't tell mama. these are iconic numbers that i have sang in my bedroom since i was a little girl. so to actually be learning that same choreography and that same production that i was so excited to see. i can't even put it into words. it's so, just doing those moves, it immediately feels like, "wow, this is so exciting!" preparation is key. it's just making sure to warm up every part of your show. you have to warm up your instrument, you have to warm up your voice, you have to warm up your body, and then at the end of the show you have to cool it all down as well. playing the character of helga, this marks sarah bishops' touring debut. "i am like a father to her. so, when she is bad, i spank her." there's a lot of anticipation. i'm just excited to get started because, you know, i've dreamed about

all these awkward weird talents i just happen to have. like how many girls play the trumpet? it was such a perfect fit for what i wanted to do as an actor and what the show has to offer. and being on tour, i think it's a good time for me to be traveling and exploring at a relatively young age. lori eure is more familiar with the territory. she was part of the shows revival in 1998 and the first national tour of cabaret. i'm still excited to be apart of the show 15 years later in my career. but i felt like i have so much more to offer for my characters now. i've lived longer and i've had more life experiences whether they were good or bad, but they can all add to make a stronger presence on stage and add more layers to the character that i will be playing. making sure the

award winner, william ivey long who is once again creating the fabulous fashions. this needs to hug the butt like that. one of the mc's lines is "every night we have to fight with the girls to keep them from taking off all their clothes. tonight we might lose the battle." so specifically i took that as my mission. so my job is to make sure the ladies can give that impression that these clothes are just going to fall off of them...we have two bras on and three panties. while supporting them in all the choreography and everything they're doing. this is an example of you can think you're just so smart and you do a sketch based on a reference, and then you get the live person in the room and it doesn't look good at all. so you change it. you can learn the combination all day long in the studio, but once you put the costume, it adds a-whole-nother level of intensity to your character. wearing those revealing costumes

going? good. hi, how are you? lift it up and exhale! pull your shoulder blades together. absolutely breathtaking. keep tension on the bands the whole time. prepare us for our show tonight, not destroy us. do about 5 more seconds of this, nice and easy. so actually dancers will know it's like you're trying to go in opposition. but to balance that so is having a life outside of the theatre. professional and personal balance, especially as an actor, is necessary. i'm recently engaged. so for me being on tour, it's going to be a matter of staying in touch. my finance's going to be flying out a ton. i'm a preschool teacher when i'm not doing the show. so it's all about finding little things that give you a little bit of happiness, a little bit of joy in your day-to-day when you're not on a gig. so here at cabaret, everybody is so multi-talented, but i wanted to get in on the fun. ready guys,

now getting underway. you want them to take away what has always been at the heart of the show which is that it's exciting, it's memorable, it's musically thrilling. the numbers are fantastic, the characters are memorable, but also that it's challenging. it makes us think, it moves us, and i think i can say that this production in particular does that probably better than any other. you come out, maybe with a few tears, but yet you are like, "this is why i just bought a ticket to this. this is what theatre is and this is why we come to the theatre."
