authorities say shots were fired, though they would not elaborate on who fired. one protester was killed, identified as lavoy finicum, an arizona rancher who became a spokesman for the occupation. >> honestly, there are things more important than your life. freedom is one of them. >> reporter: nbc news spoke by phone with finicum's daughter. >> i want to know why, because i know my dad. he would never put someone's life in jeopardy. he would only defend his life. >> reporter: another militant was injured, treated at the hospital and turned over to the fbi. in all eight anti-government occupiers are behind bars, clugt group's leader, ammon bundy and his brother. shauna cox was also arrested. we saw her making soup shortly after it began. >> we are setting ourselves up to help those reclaim their lands back.

happened in arizona where occupier john had returned home. he posted a video on facebook, hugging his kids before turning himself in. they took occupation on january 2nd. they're calling for local control of the land and demanding freedom for two oregon rancher convicted of lighting fires on government land. while many residents wanted the group to leave, authorities made no forceful attempt to stop the occupation until now. some armed militants still remain at the refuge. the occupation is not over, although a few did choose to leave this morning. those who were arrested now face federal felony charges of conspiracy to impede u.s. officers. >> joe fryer, thank you. another major story we're covering&this morning. donald trump's decision to pull out of tomorrow night's republican presidential debate, which comes just days before the iowa caucuses. we have complete coverage

donald trump off. a fox news spokesperson gave this statement, we learned from a secret back channel that the ayatollah and putin both intend to treat donald trump unfairly when they meet with him. a nefarious source tells us that trump has his own secret plan to replace the cabinet with his twitter followers to see if he should even go to these meetings. what was the strategy? was that smart of fox to poke the bear? >> i think journalistically and tactically it was not smart. a news organization sponsoring a debate should let their journalism speak for themselves. fox for some reason decided to go after donald trump. they have a right to have megyn kelly be a moderator, that's their choice. trump can decide to participate. by putting out that provocative statement, they gave him not only an excuse but a general rationale to say, i'm not going to show up at the debate sponsored by a news organization that's taunting me. that's not donald trump's way.

cruz wasted no time, mark. he jumped in and said, look, i'll challenge you, donald, to a one-on-one debate with no moderator, seemingly taking away the obstacles. how can trump duck that? >> well, it's going to be an interesting question to see whether cruz keeps that up and whether that debate begins an issue. ted cruz must win iowa more than donald trump. it's not absolutely essential he finish first but he needs to win there. trump i don't think will do a one-on-one debate with cruz. cruz will have to decide if he wants to keep on that message. trump has a lot of momentum going on in iowa, a lot of organizations, and cruz has to find a way to stop him. i'm not sure fighting about debates is the way to stop him. >> thank you. as for democrats, bernie sanders headsed to white house today for a sitdown with president obama. the president has remained officially neutral for months but this week in an interview

"these fish are normally cold water species that live in northeast iowa in our spring fed streams, but during the winter time, we can bring them out to some of these lakes and stock them, and provide a really neat and unique fishing opportunity for people." said ben wallace,
