"massive, massive ship," said nick mcgowan, sioux city. more impressive? the words "sioux city" stamped on the stern. it's a sight that wasn't lost on even the youngest tourists. "the ship, itself, was truly extraordinary," said nick. 14-year-old nick mcgowan, and his 12-year-old brother, jake, joined their dad, chris, on the 10-hour drive to see the launch of the ship named after their hometown. "we're pretty fortunate to come to see the uss sioux city in wisconsin," said jake mcgowan, sioux city. "it was pretty cool!" that's despite the darkness. this close to launch, the electrical system is shut down. in fact, when the sioux city launches, commander ken lieberman says it will only be about 80-percent complete. the rest of the work gets done on the water. stand-up "the launch is also a point of personal pride for commander lieberman, who has watched this ship be built from the keel all the way up. "this is really somethingnghat we should be teaching the next generation," said chris mcgowan, sioux city. it's a powerful example." >> also today, the navy conducted one off its oldest rituals that surround the launch of a ship. the "mast stepping" ceremony involved placing commemorativ e items into a capsule that will be welded to the uss sioux city's radar mast. the practice comes from roman times. because early sea travel was dangerous, coins were placed under the ship's mast so the crew could pay for safe passage afterlife, if they died on the journey.

poll shows the governor polling in 5th place in iowa at four percent. but,t,he governor says he e ans on surprising a lot of people on monday and throughout the rest of the election cycle. you've seen the ads on your tv and radio, but have you wondered...wh o's paying for them? ktiv's michelle schoening found one national organization breaking down the issue of money and politics. michelle, what can you tell us? the organization is called reformers caucus. it's a group of former members of congress and governors who hope to reform the way money influences the e ter and politicians. a former congressman and member of reformers caucus says over the last decade campaiais have become more and d re expensive.e.ith that greater expense--those who don't have the money for support may decide not to run. he also added if we want to be a democracy...o ur legislation that protects naming who is funding campaigns and advertisement s needs to change. representative leach said the groups who raise the most money may have no interest of what happens in your state. the bubbles were flying today as cars rolled into the car wash due to warmer temperatures. cars lined up for most of the day to get some of that salt and road grime off of their vehicles in anticipation of siouxland's next wintry system. one of the owners says that the combination of warm temperatures and the impending winter storm made for a great day for a car wash. "yes, everytime there is a snowstorm, people want to come in and get the salt off of their cars and get ready for the snowstorm," said daniel gesy, an owner of power wash. with two power wash locations across sioux city, there's hope for many more washes before the storm arrives. still to come... a blood drive to remember a siouxland teenager killed in a crash. her friends share their thoughts

the iowa economic development authority approved tax benefits for the corn ethanol project proposed by farmers energy cardinal northwest of atlantic. the ieda board approved $4.25 million in sales tax refunds for the company promising to create 49 jobs. it will be iowa's 44th corn ethanol refinery and at 150 million gallons a year is among the state's largest. a businessman from minnesota who has built many of the nation's plant is the one buying the facility. brad's here -- the high school wrestling season is winding down. we'll have districts coming up soon -- and the siouxland conference is holding center. we'll have a live report from ktiv's mark freundith head coach nic nelson. and, mma fighting returns to siouxland this weekend, with championship fights. sports fource is next. one of the areas that i've been particularly interested in is the area of children.

sioux city east grad kyle angerman will fight for the 170-pound welterweight amateur title against martin sellers of north platte, nebraska. it's the first title fight for angerman. the main event is the 135-pound flyweight world title match. sioux city's john devall will face derrick mandell of michigan for the championship belt. devall is 2 and 1 in 'king of the cage' fights -- and a win would give him his second title. "when i came into this organization, this is what i originally wanted," said devall. "i had a backstep, so they gave me an opportunity for a different title. i showed up and i knocked the kid out and i'm ready to do it again if i have to." "i heard he's a tough kid so i'm just ready to put on a show and show what i can do," said angerman. "i'm gonna celebrate the win with my hometown and all my family and friends." doors open at 4:30 on saturday. the are 12 fights in all and the action starts at six o'clock. the sioux city explorers have re-signed another all- star.
