you're about to get a fresh new start, and for some of you that may be e king a decision to end your marriage. >> in fact, the american academy of matrimonial lawyers -- who knew there was such a thing says that the number of people filing for divorce is one-third higher this time of year. le >> if you are going through one right now, you're not alone. bravo's "girlfriend's guide to divorce" tries to put a positive spin on divorce. >> you want to be the new face of divorce? knock yourself out. this is what the real fafa of divorce looks like. it's stressed out. it's old before its damn time, and it's scared to death. >> wow. >> we love her. >> we love her. >> marty is the creator and executive producer of "girlfriend's guide to divorce." vickie is the author of the girlfriend's guide books series. >> and a producer on the show. both of them very smart. >> jeff is a p pchologist and all threreof them are survivors of divorce. >> actually, all five of us are.
2:40 am
>> let's be honest. >> you know what's funny, we're talking about divorce, and she was describing the horrible things people go through, but there are also some sense of relief. they talked about five emotions people go through after divorce. relieved, hopeful, confident, empowered, and rejuvenated. i was a little surprised. >> maybe not all at the same time, though. >> i actually -- there's a survey that bravo did that indicates that most people feel that way. i, h hever, felt terrifieded i had been married for 25 years. i didn't know anything from what my -- to what -- if i should start wearing bras and panties that matched. should i get a tummy tuck? i was so scared about being in mymy0s and getting a divorce. >> i love jeff nodding yes to bras and panti.
2:41 am
other thing she said before. i think what this survey is showing is initially you do have these very positive feelings because you just are out of something that has been -- >> totally unhappy. >> unhappy for such a long time, but the reality is that you do begin to deal with a lot of those fears and you have to figure it out. you haveo work it out. then eventually you get to that place where there is joy once again. something you probably have not had for a very long time. >> it depends on the details, doesn't it? if somebody leaves you for, say, another person, that's pretty devastating. you got to get over that, the rejection part of that. if you have children -- >> i have two. i have an 11-year-old and 13-year-old now, but they were 5 and 8. >> how tough that was decision? >> it makes it -- it makes it so much more difficult, and obviously i think a lot of people stay in marriages because they're worried about the kids, but i don't know on reflection whether one is better than the other. i think -- >> unhappy parents make unhappy
2:42 am
>> if you have children, i think certainly it is a factor to look at whether you should keep working on that marriage and whether you can fall in love again and make it work. however, if you are going to be in a situation of where you just are roommates and you are doing it for the kids, i can tell i have seen enough therapy cases where that can really hurt the kids much, much more. >> i have been interviewing a bunch of couple that is have been married for 50 plus years they all did say a couple of they said, number onon they didn't plan on loving each other forever. they just agreed to love each other tomorrow. they also -- they all said this. they weren't of the generation where you threw something out if it was broken. they all were sort of nodding. i am noticing in the couple -- i thought i wonder if we jump too quick sometimes. >> it's funny. the show this season -- abby's message is about positivity and, you know, trying to make the best of whatever situation you're in.
2:43 am
split conn, because they have divorce conventions. she's, like, i know, i read your ok and i did this and i just got divorced. it was just too much work. that's not her message at all. it is a last resort. >> at the end of the day it's a last resort. >> this season you see that she went in with sort of a euphoria in the first season. now it's getting real. in the reality divorce when it ends, it's not really the end of the experience. >> right. >> you may be ininherapy with your kids for another two years. >> right. >> you may be in court for a very long time too. you really should give your marriage everything that you can. don't give up. just do everything possible, and then if it has to en at least you don't have to look back and say i wish i could have, what if i had. >> we have to go, but you also say don't start dating too soon or you'll make the same mistakes. >> you'll to it again. >> wish i had known that part. >> by the way, girlfriend's
2:44 am
