good morning. thanks for joining us on this tuesday, february 2nd. from a winter storm to politics... there's a lot going on to tell you about this morning. siouxland is bracing for this latest round of winter weather. it's set to be the biggest storm of the season so far. we've got crews out keeping tabs on the roads this morning... and ben will have all the details in his forecast. and what a night at the iowa caucus head quarters in des moines. the votes have been tallied. ted cruz sailed to an unexpected victory on the republican side. and a razor thin win for hillary clinton on the democratic side. so let's get to our top story this morning.... the blizzard. but first ben is on the outdoor

reminding people to move their cars from the streets to make way for plows to get through. also, city leaders in south sioux city, nebraska have issued a snow emergency today and tomorrow for people there. that means no parking on emergency routes or you will be towed. don't push snow onto streets, clear sidewalks as soon as possible, stay back from plows and give them room to get by, and limit your travel. the heavy part of the storm should be hitting us right around 8 o'clock, so while the roads aren't too bad right now, they're only getting worse throughout the morning. ktiv's michelle schoening has been following the preparations for this storm and she joins us live from floyd boulevard in sioux city this morning.

and with the possibility of a foot of snow around the siouxland area, everyone is making last minute preparations. yesterday, i checked-in to see how sioux city prepared for the storm. last night, city plow crews began prepping the roadways and equipment. more than 15 trucks will be on the roads trying to make them as clear as possible. sioux city's field service manager says the windy conditions and heavy snow will be a challenge to keep the roadways clear. shovels, salt, and snow blowers were the hot ticket items for shoppers as they, too, get ready to dig out. "that. and i saw one on sale and thought maybe i was going to need that tomorrow," said miles petersen, last minute shopper. the city asks the public to remove parked cars along the streets to make plowing the roads easier. they also advise everyone to stay safe if travel is a necessity.

now to the other big story of the morning... the iowa caucus. the results are in. on the republican side, ted cruz pulls the upset over donald trump, beating him by four percent. cruz's iowa victory was propelled by republican caucus-goers who said they want a candidate who shares their values. marco rubio finished a strong third and carries that momentum into new hampshire. hillary clinton is claiming a razor-thin win

democrats. sanders say he's taking that as a big thumbs-up for his presidential campaign that shows he can ultimately prevail. and in woodbury county donald trump actually won the republican caucus with 31 percent of the votes. and on the democrat side, hillary clinton ended up with 46 percent and bernie sanders had fifty-three percent of the votes. so on the republican side, we have an unexpected republican winner. and on the democratic side, it was a historically close race. let's go to nbc's tracie potts... she's analyzing results in des moines.

reporting live in des moines, iowa with chief photographer jordan ogren, robert lowe, ktiv news 4. >> the caucuses turned into a nail-biter that kept politicos guessing into the early morning hours. democrat martin o'malley pulled out of the presidential race after a poor showing last night and republican mike huckabee says he's ending his second bid for the white house, too. now, for those still in the race, the focus turns to new hampshire, where the nation's first primary vote takes place next week. in other news this morning... the three inmates who escaped from an orange county, california detention center last month faced a judge for the first time since their capture last weekend. investigators revealed yesterday the fugitives argued over the life of a cab driver who they had kidnapped while they were on the run. the men eventually decided to let the man go. the inmates are from various parts of california. they escaped from the jail january 22nd. one inmate surrendered last friday in santa ana, while the other two were arrested last saturday morning

detained oregon militia leader ammon bundy's father ordered protesters yesterday to keep occupying the malhaur wildlife refuge. cliven bundy sent a notice to the harney county sheriff to remove all federal and state policing agents out of harney county. group leader ammon bundy and ten others were arrested last week, after one of the protest group's most prominent members was shot dead by a law enforcement officer. ammon bundy will be back in court today. there's a new smartphone app for emergencies. coming up next, how first responders can use it to save your life if you can't respond when they get to you.

have been expanded to cover 13 million americans from new mexico to the great lakes as this winter storm kicks into high gear. heavy snow and high winds will lead to major travel concerns for the next two days. taking a live look at our okoboji skycam... here's a look at the weather conditions in sioux city. this is a look at the i-29 and wesley parkway overpass... and in spencer, iowa.... here's a look down grand avenue. the ioio department of transportation says that highways in the area are wet and partially snow-covered. in the cornhusker state... the norfolk, nebraska skycam shows snow coming down there. according to the nebraska

in the state are snow-covered, slushy, and icy... they are warning drivers about blowing snow too. norfolk and the surrounding areas could get up to a foot of snow. due to the weather, many schools are closed today, including all schools in sioux city. be sure to watch for the latest in scscol closings and delays right here on ktiv, or online at ktiv dot com. we have received a few new ones, so they keep rolling in. south sioux city, nebraska has issued a snow emergency for today and tomorrow. that means no parking on emergency routes or you will be towed. and a remimier not to push snow onto streets, clear sidewalks as soon as possible, stay back from plows and give them room to get by, and limit your travel. the heavy part of the storm should be hitting us right around 8 o'clock, so while the roads aren't too bad right now, they're only getting worse

ktiv's michelle schoening has been following the preparations for this storm and she joins us live from floyd boulevard in sioux city this morning. michelle, how are the roads right now? with the possibility of a foot of snow around the siouxland area, everyone is making last minute preparations. yesterday, i checked-in to see how sioux city prepared for the storm. last night, ty plow crews began prepping the roadways and equipment. more than 15 trucks will be on the roads trying to make them as clear as possible. sioux city's field service manager says the windy conditions and heavy snow will be a challenge to keep the roadways clear. shovels, salt, and snow blowers were the hot ticket items for shoppers as they, too, get ready to dig out. the city asks the public to remove parked cars along the streets to make plowing the roads easier. they also advise everyone to stay safe if travel is a necessity.

under a blizzard warning until four o'clock tomorrow morning. the storm is expected to dump eight to twelve inches of snow on the region. the heaviest snow is expected to fall this morning. meterologist ben dorenbach says we could have a solid eight inches on the ground by lunchtime. most siouxland schohos have closed for the day. the other big story: the iowa caucuses. hillary clinton is claiming a razor-thin win over bernie sanders for the democrats. sanders say he's taking that as a big thumbs-up for his presidential campaign that shows he can ultimately prevail. meanwhile, on the republican side, ted cruz p pls the upset over donald trump, beating him by four percent. cruz's iowa victory was propelled by republican caucus-goers who said they want a candidate who shares their values. marco rubio finished a strong third and carries that momentum into new hampshire.
