looks like now. sioux city is among several communities that have declared snow emergencies. parking is prohibited on on emergency snow route streets. violators will be towed. the city has also closed city hall and other non- essential services and facilities. that parking ban will also help out crews out working to make the roads safer. ktiv's tiffany lane is at the sioux city public utilities office with more on the cleanup conditions. tiffany? sheila, over the last few hours, we've been seeing city snow plows make their way in and out of the gate behind me. city officials say all 50 pieces of snow equipment are being used since the snow started. the streets superintenden t says the plows are whiteout conditions forcing interstate 29 to close in parts of siouxland. dot officals in south dakota closed i-29 from the iowa/south dakota border all the

this afternoon near north sioux city, south dakota. zero visibility making roads impassible. there's also a "no travel advisory" for many state highways in the area as well. even before the interstate closed, most motorists were smart enough to stay off the roads. scott vanbrunt, a driver for k and b transportation out of south sioux city, came to pick up a load in sioux falls this morning. he says it's supposed to go to texas, but his company called him and told him it's best if he doesn't go anywhere. vanbrunt says he'll probably spend all day and night at the truck stop, and hopefully be able to pull out of here tomorrow. "you're sitting up pretty high and the thing weighs up to 80,000 pounds at times and it's hard to stop and when conditions get like this it's even harder," said k&b transportation driver scott vanbrunt.>[duratio n:0:11] vanbrunt says now that he'll be parked for hours, he'll get in a nap, a shower, some dinner, and even a little tv in the truck. sioux city buses not running today. bus driver, rick stewart, says he's been driving for the transit center for 12 years, and he's never seen this happen. this is stewart showing us the roads

season. stewart says in the past buses might shut down for a few hours, but today is unusual. in siouxland. many locations were seeing accumulations around a foot by late in the day with another inch or two possible before things wind down early tonight. the wind has been gusting over 40 miles per hour at times and it's going to stay pretty windy tonight so blowing snow will still be a problem. travel is not advised across much of the area so staying home is the best idea you could have. it will still stay breezy early in the day wednesday with maybe some snow on the ground still blowing around, but that wind should go down some during the day and a little sunshine will return although it will be colder with highs barely getting into the 20s. the rest of our forecast stays pretty quiet with highs maybe getting back into

"this kind of weather you should have your headlights on. that's required by iowa law, and it just makes it a little easier for other people to see you. even in the city, the visibility is very low in some areas and this just helps other people see you coming, and other drivers drive a little more defensively." said sgt. jeremy mcclure, sioux city police department. sergeant mcclure also suggested packing an emergency kit to keep in your car in case you get

while snow crippled a lot of businesses... not every place kept their doors locked today., heavy snow and strong winds couldn't keep some people home. the store's manager says the day started out really busy, they had a lot of people coming in for breakfast and lunch. but, since about 1 p.m., it's significantly slowed down. she says they decided to stay open because they beliefe in being there for customers 24/7. one shopper we spoke with said they were just testing the roads and bought something to justify being out. other shoppers say they braved the storm to get some needed snow day snacks. "well we got some soda because we don't have much to drink at home," said anthony zamora. "we got some pizzas to cook and chips and stuff for snacks." so you braved the storm? today after a explosion in stanton county, nebraska. it happened on 835th road around noon. first responders forced to try and get through a foot of snow to get there. the norfolk fire chief suspects a propane furnace caused the explosion. because of the heavy snow, extra precautions had to take place. "what has happened here for the past 12 or 18 hours is really the preparation for all of that. it's getting the apparatus, the chains and cables installed, we got snowmobiles brought in from one of our local dealers so that we could use those to access places if it wasn't passable," said cordes. the family was safe and there was no smoke or fire damage inside of the house. because of the weather, the vote for a multi-million dollar bond issue for iowa lakes community college has been delayed for one week. the special election will now take place next tuesday, february 9th.

extended for one week . several counties in northwest iowa will decide the future of the $16,000,000 needed for community college improvements. for a home valued a $100,000 a homeowner would pay about $12 per year. . two leading agriculture groups have endorsed nebraska governor pete ricketts' plan to slow the growth of property taxes. the nebraska farm bureau federation and the nebraska cattlemen association both support his plan. ricketts introduced two bills that would tighten spending and levy limits on local governments and restrict the assessed growth in farm- and ranchland property values. cattle and calf conditions in south dakota are rated 84 percent good to excellent, and sheep and lamb conditions are 81 percent in those categories. hay supplies in south dakota are rated 98 percent adequate to surplus, and stock water supplies are 80 percent in those categories. brad's here -- iowa state continues their tough schedule. the cyclones host west virginia tonight in a battle of top-15 teams.
