investigated regarding a robbery saturday night. police claim mothershed was able to shoot officer moritz while handcuffed and then later shot himself in the thigh. mothershed is charged with two counts of attempted murder and five counts of first degree robbery. mothershed's initial appearance is scheduled for 8 thursday morning. live outside the woodbury county jail, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. a 25-year-old omaha man has pleaded guilty to killing his mother and his 4-year-old half-brother. roberto martinez- marinero pleaded guilty to murder today authorites say he stabbed and beat his mother during a fight over money. martinez-marinero also dumped his 11-month-old brother in a dumpster. the child was discovered bruised, but o.k. south dakota's death penalty would be repealed under a measure that's being considered today by the senate state affairs committee. the bill's main sponsor is republican senator arthur rusch of vermillion. he's a former judge, who has

death penalty case. rusch told the committee this morning he's seen first-hand how costly and hard it was on jurors and court personnel. he says death penalty cases are unfairly taxing on county governments and he doesn't believe the punishment is an effective crime deterrent. civil rights leaders gathered at the iowa capitol today to push for criminal justice reform. members of local naacp chapters, and other groups, want to keep confidential juvenile records, and "ban the box" to expand work opportunities for people with criminal histories. but, those leaders admit getting real change could be a challenge. there was snow in some parts of siouxland...but can we expect more tonight? here to tell us that is chief meteorologis t ron demers with the first look at our forecast. weather ad-lib a little light snow made its way across parts of the area with central siouxland only seeing a dusting although one to two inches fell in the eastern parts of the region. we're not done with snow chances either. another chance of some light snow comes our way by the afternoon on thursday which could continue into thursday

(matt) the state house has postponed voting on the proposed half-cent sales tax increase that would help fund governor dennis daugaard's plan to boost teacher pay. (sheila) more than $60 million from the hike would go toward the teacher salary plan. the governor's office says daugaard is "optimistic" about his proposal. daugaard's chief of staff says the administration sees the

quote "know that they don't have the votes to kill it." it takes two-thirds support in each chamber to pass a tax hike. with the recent zika outbreak in south america, there's concern about how the virus affects those who get it. the flu-like illness causes joint stiffness, a rash and pink eye...but that's not what doctors are concerned about. one siouxland specialist says the biggest risk is for pregnant women. zika virus has been associated with babies being born with microcephaly. the disease causes babies to have small sized heads and brain abnormalities. "this is new. the zika outbreak is fairly new. zika virus has been around for years, but the outbreak in central america and brazil is fairly new," said unitypoint clinic director of maternal fetal medicine dr. al fleming. doctors say the best way to avoid contracting the disease is postponing travel during pregnancy. tonight at 10, hear more details from a doctor and an expecting siouxland couple with zika concerns.

students are using their free time to support a cause. several north high students are a part of a group called "caring closet." the group offers clothing, shoes and other necessities for free to siouxlanders in need. all items have been donated by north high students, staff and community members. the caring closet will be open again from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. this saturday. one north high student says they have something for everyone. "we do have clothes for little kids, toddlers, babies, infants, um teenagers, and then we have for college students and adults, we have prom dresses, we have work clothes, such as scrubs for nurses, we have other kinds of work clothes. and we also have professional clothing. we have blazers, dress pants, dress shirts, and even a variety of shoes for all sizes and all styles." said araceli lopez, a senior at sioux city north high school if you want to find sioux city north high caring closet on social media, you can find the link to their page on ktiv dot com inside this story. it's a case that even the judge

today ktiv's tiffany lane was in court as two teens, who were charged with robbing a local bank branch, were sentenced. tiffany? matt and sheila, it was an emotional day in court. 19-year-old heaven zevenbergen, and 18-year- old angelica perez, learned their fate following the heist, inside a security national bank branch, back in august.

national bank branch located inside hy-vee on hamilton boulevard. "miss perez left the bank," "miss zevenbergen feigned passing out, in order to give miss perez more time to escape and flee the scene." perez had entered the bank in disguise and handed a note to zevenbergen who worked as a teller there, saying that she had a gun. perez left with 10- thousand dollars and their actions left a workplace rattled. "malicious act changed the workplace dynamic," said mandi sievers, from the security national bank. "within one week, the bank lost two employees. others requested to be relocated." perez, who was also described as an exceptional student, is a former member of the east high school chamber choir and speech team. she and zevenbergen have been close for many years by bonding over health issues they've had since they were young, according to perez's mom, melissa bates,

judge neary said this is one of those lessons in life that perez and zevenbergen have to learn the hard way. as sentencing began, an emotional room as family members of the defendants watched the teens being taken away. zevenbergen continued shouting "i love you" to her mother as she was taken out of the courtroom in handcuffs. a feeling that no parent would ever want to experience.>> the judge sentenced zevenbergen and perez to up to 5 years in prison. the judge said if he had given them probation, rather than prison time, it would have sent a bad message to others wanting to commit similar crimes. zevenbergen and perez also have to repay $10,000 to the bank. south dakota officials are praising action by the u.s. supreme court to temporarily halt new federal rules aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal- fueled power plants. justices have put the rules on hold while a legal challenge proceeds. the white house issued a statement saying it disagreed with the decision. president barack obama last august unveiled rules designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. south dakota is part of a coalition of nearly 30 states that sued. still to come... it was a special celebration for the ymca. find out why they were eating cake at the gym next.

"we feel like we're a big part of the community now and we feel like there is a lot more support for us and we feel encouraged to do our job," steve avery, a board member for the norm waitt sr. ymca. the birthday celebration will include lots of new events, and activities, throughout the year. and, it's not a birthday without cake! the treat helped to sweeten the celebration. the presidents of the united states were on display today thanks to a local school. third grade students at clark elementary school were assigned to share the historical importance of a united states president.. all while dressing and acting like them. the school's gym was filled with posters and presentations this morning showcasing all of the hard work the students had done throughout this unit in their class.

was a long process but it was a fun one. "i learned about making my poster and i had a lot of fun making my costume and project," said kohen coch. "it's a really cool atmosphere. the arena's different, everything's right on top of you. it makes for a sweet atmosphere and we love going into environments like that on the road." "it was great to have the experience to go down there in that environment and be successful like we were last year. i think that's a good thing," said coach fran mccaffery. "but this game will be a lot different i think." senior adam woodbury, from sioux city east, is having his best season. woodbury is averaging a career-high 8 and a half points and a team-high 7 rebounds a game. he's had four double- doubles in his last seven games, and is the anchor in the middle of the iowa defense. "every big ten team has some guys that can really put it in the hole," said woodbury. "it's a key for our defense to kind of limit those guys under their averages and make them really work for their points. this will be no different for indiana. we've got to continue to make them work as hard as they can." iowa and indiana tipoff at 8 o'clock thursday on espn.

road at texas tech tonight at 8. the cyclones will be without starting center jameel mckay for the second straight game -- he's under an indefinite suspension. nebraska is without leading scorer shavon shields, for their game at wisconsin, which is just underway. shields was knocked unconscious in the huskers win over rutgers on saturday. we'll have highlights of both games at ten. in omaha last night, creighton earned their biggest win of the season, upsetting number-5 xavier. maurice watson scored a career-high 32 points as the bluejays won 70 to 56. the bluejays had a 16- nothing -- but xavier did get within five with six minutes left. creighton is now 16-9 overall and 7-5 in the big east. the jays go to marquette on saturday night. the briar cliff men have a three-game lead in the gpac, heading into tonight's game at dordt. if the chargers win, they will clinch at least a tie for the conference title. sixth-ranked briar cliff is 23-3 overall and 14-2 in the gpac. the chargers beat mount marty 102-59 in their last game -- the eighth time this
