hidden inside the couch and shot officer ryan moritz in the leg. during the struggle, police said mothershed shot himself in his own thigh. su "18-year-old isaiah mothershed was released from the hospital wednesday and booked into the woodbury county jail. he's been charged with two counts of attempted murder andndive counts of first degree robbery." thursday, mothershed made his initial appearance in court at the woodbury county law enforcement center. while answering judge todd hensley's questions, mothershed can be seen keeping his head down the entire time. the two charges of attempted murder include the night mothershed shot moritz as well as an incident two days before. on februruy 5th, police say mothershed and three others used a crowbar to eer a residence at 4538 polk street in sioux city where he fired a shot at one of the homeowners as she chased after him. mothershed's preliminary hearing will be on february 19th. in sioux city, tiffany lane, ktiv news 4.>> mothershed's bond has been set

police say mothershed didn't live in the apartmtmt where officer moritz washot. two of the other suspects arrested that night, justin ferguson and jordyn delfs, wereiving there at the time. the last four occupiers of a national wildlife refuge in oregon surrendered thursday. the holdouts were the last of a group that seized the malheur national refuge on january second. the occupiers were demanding the government turn over ththland to locals and to release t t ranchers imprisoned for arson. the group had been surrounded by armored vehicl on wednesday and escorted by f-b-i agents off of the property. at least 12 occupiers were arrested last week - including leader ammon bundy. concerns over water quality have risen, nationwide, as the water crisis in michigan, escalates. the high levels of lead found in flint water has started raising questions about water quality here in siouxland. but,t,he water and sewer director for the city of norfolk, nebraska, says that's not an issue for his community. "water in norfolk meets or exceeds all epa requirements. we do test

briar cliff university athletes rely on their 44,000-square foot practice facility during winter weather. but, the recent blizzard caused a tear in the charger dome that put a plug on their practice schedules. their head track coach was the first to see the 60- foot gap in the dome... "being in season the panic-mode kind of hits as a coach you're running your mind on how long this is going to be down, where am i going to practice for the next week, weeks, months, whatever it would have been," said briar cliff f university headrack coach, nate treinen. worldwide air structure assistance, or wasa, were flown out from canada to get it back up. "just about every outdoor sport at briar cliff university uses the charger dome at some point so having it repaired was a big deal for them." wasa had to investigate what exactly happened. "a massive snow slide that came down and hit the corner and the corner only has so much room to give so the fabricictore along the edge, said worldwideeair ructure assissance owner, bbb jessome. it's been a weeks wrth of work patching it up andhursday, it was time to re-inflate the dome. n the mean time, athletic teams have been traveling to differentgyms for

"user's guide is essentially an introduction o othe instruments in the orchestra to the students as well as an opoprtunity to hearow music can express many, many different emotions," said mark francis, executive director of the sioux city symphony orchestra. after learning about the

story with the instruments. they also had the opportunity to sing along with the symphony to the "starar and stripes." one student says that was h h favorite part of the performance. "at the end when it says 'by our might and by our right,' our kids in our class whenever we would practice that at school, we'd get to do a little dance," said kennedy, a fourth- grader at leeds elementary school in sioux city. the symphony orchestra also participated in the league of american orchestra's charity event, "orchestras feed america." many of ththstudents brought nonoperishable food items to be donated to the food bank of siouxland. drones are becoming extremely popular. up next, we'll show how you the drone-racing crazy

one month before their due date, jeremy and lisa cotter had a regular appointment with their ob. the doctor blindsided them with news no parent wants to hear. "...and we found out that one of the twins did not have a heartbeat," lisa cotter said. with little time to grieve, lisa was prepped for surgery. "we had an emergency c- section, and we delivered our daughter, evelynne, healthy," lisa cotter said. "and, our other daughter, elizabeth, was stillborn." "the rest of the day was like a bad dream," said jeremy cotter, father. a dream the family couldn't wake up from... forced to celebrate life, and grieve death, at the same time. "we would have to ask a nurse to go and get our daughter's body from the morgue, or wherever they were keeping her cooled," jeremy cotter said. precious time for a grieving family. but, that grief led to an act of generosity. last

started fundraising for what's called a "cuddle cot." made in the uk, the device allows a child's body to be cooled, at a mother's bedside, preserving the body so it won't decompose. "we would not have had to send her back to the morgue... every time we were visiting with her," lisa cotter said. the cotters hope they can help other families, dealing with a loss, by donating a "cuddle cot" to unitypoint health- st. luke's, in sioux city. "we would have been able to have her with us whenever weanted toee her," jeremy cotter said. mercy medical center already has one. and, the cotters hope, one day, they'll be available to every grieving family in their time of need. >> the cotters will donate the "cuddle cot" to st. luke's,s,n elizababh's name, on the anniversary of elizabeth's death, february

a u.s. magistrate from sioux city has been approved to serve as a judge on one of iowa's federal courts. senator chuck grassley announced that the u.s. senate unanimously approved the nomination of leonard strand, of sioux city. he will serve as a u.s. district judge for the northehe district of iowa. president barck obama nominated strand in june to replace u.s. district judge mark bennett. the nomination will go back to

president for final approval. strand graduated from the university of iowa law school in 1990 anhad a private practice before becoming a magistrate in 2012. iowa utilities regulators met for the fourth day yestery to try and make a decicion on the bakken oilil pipeline. a texas company wants to bury 346 mileleof crude oil pipe under iowa farmland. the iowa utilities board is also considering whether to give the company, dakota access, the authority to force landowners to sign easements using eminent domain. the three-member board is also deciding on a hazardous pipeline permit for the bakken pipeline. environmental and property oppose it. supporters say it's the safest way to transport oil, and it will creaea jobs. imate change continunu to be a sore subject in the political world, and it's association to global warming. on tuesday the u.s. supreme court dealt president barack obama a blow by moving to temporarily block his administration's rules to limit greenhouse gas emissions

u.s. senator mike rounds, of south dakota, agrees with the high court's decision. the republican thinks we should cocoinue to pursue renewewle energygyhroughout the countrtr "we should be pursuing every type of energy out there. we should be pursuing wind energy. we should also be pursuing more hydro- electric energy. we ought to be making coal as clean as we possibly can, but there's nothing wrong with looking at nuclear power as well," said senator mike rounds, south dakotaenator. in a statement, the white house press secretary said, quote "we disagree" with the couou's action. state senators in south dakota are debating a bill that may change which bathroom and locker rooms some rushmore ste students use. the bill would require students to use lockers and restrooms that match the biological sex of the person at birth. the state's house of representatives has already approved the plan. democrats in pierre call the bill "government overreaea." proponents of the plan believe this measure would protect the privacy of south dakota students. "it seems like a pretty common

convinind that the vast majority of peoeoe in south dakota support the bill," said south dakota representative, jim bolin. schools must provide "reasonable accommodatio ns" for transgender students under the bill, including a one-person bathroom among other accommodations. wayne community schools is proposing a new gym and performing arts center at both the junior and senior high. the plan also includes a new building for kindergagaen and preschool studentsts last night, community members were able to hear the vision and give their feedback on the proposal. if the school board moves forward with the plan, it would become a bond-issue. it's projected to be an $18- million dollar project. wayne schools added a preschool program this year. that program is currently in a leased building. the superintenden t says getting a building for those students and kindergarten would be the next step. "our elementnty enrollment is reallylyear capacity at that building so a preschool/kinderga rten facility will certainly help alleviate some of the

students that go to school there," said mark lenihan, wayne community schools superintendent. a bulk of the cost of the project would be the junior and senior high school additions. if it gets approved, lenihan says they're estimating property taxes would increase about $120 annuauay per $100,000 valuation of your home. a decent percentage of those paying are farmers, who aren't certain they want to pay more money. "now we're wlooking at a $7 to $8 increase per acre, which is quite a hit, at a time when corn is $3.50 a bushel and beans are $8.25," said steve lutt, a farmer in wayne. to get this on a may ballot, the school board would need to approve it in the next two weeks. after ars of planning and building, the lauch pad childeren's museum finally held its grand opening yesterday. many gathered to celebrate the hard work of all who were involved. the event kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony with area chamber of commerce members. parents and kids were invited to take part in all the fun. organizers say it was a great feeling to see this

a tennessee congressman wants to put a stop to shrinking airline seats. with that story and other business news, here's ktiv's kakalyn kinney.... thanks guys. this week, congressman steve cohen of tennessee introduced legislation to make the federal aviation administration establish minimum standards for how big seats have to be. he says it's not just for comfort, but for health and safety as well... noting that the f-a-a requires planes to be capable of rapid evacuation in case of emergency, but that quote "they haven't conducted emergency evacuation tests on all of todadas smaller seats." according to seat guru, the average width of an n rline seat has shrunk since the 19-90's from 18 and a half inches to 16 and a half inches. it's going to cost a little extra to visit universal studios in florida. a one-day adult ticket to one of universal's two orlando theme parks now costs 1-hundred and five dollars, which is up three dollars from last year. the cost of a park-to-park

the sioux city teen accused of shooting of a police officer made his first court appearance yesterday. 18-year-old isaiah motherred is charged with two counts of attempted murder and five counts of first-degree robbery. he kept his head down during the court proceeding at the woodbury county law enforcement center. his bond was set at 300- thousand dollars. police say mothershed was in handcuffs when he grabbed a gun hidden in a sofa and shot officer ryan moritz in the leg as police investigated a robbery at a sioux city apartment early sunday morning. the wayne, nebraska community school district is proposing an 18-million dollar expansion project at the junior and senior high schools. last night, school officials outlined the plans, which include a new gym and performing arts center, plulua new building

hidden inside the couch and shot officer ryan moritz in the leg. during the struggle, police said mothershed shot himself in his own thigh. su "18-year-oldldsaiah mothershed was released from the hospital wednesday ann booked into the woodbury counny jail. he's been chchrged with twwcounts of attempte murder and fe counts of first dgree robbery." thursday, mothershed made his initial appearance in court at the woodbury county law enforcement center. while answering judge todd hensley's questions, mothershed can be seen keeping his head down the entire time. the two charges of attempted murder include the night mothershed shot moritz as well as an incident two days before. on february 5th, police say mothershed and three others used a crowbar to enter a residence at 4538 polk street in sioux city where he fired a shot at one of the homeowners as she chased after him. mothershed's february 19th. in sioux city, tiffany lane, ktiv news 4.>> mothershed's bond has been set at 300-thousand dollars. police say mothershed didn't live in the apartment

two of the other suspects arrested that night, justin ferguson and jordyn delfs, lived there. the last four occupiers of a national wildlife refuge in oregon surrendered thursday. the holdouts were the last of a group that seized the malheur national refuge on january second. the occupiers were demanding the government turn over the land to locals and to release two ranchers imprisoned for arson. the group had been surrounded by armored vehicles on wednesday and escorted by f-b-i agents off of the property. at least 12 occupiers were arrested last week - including leader ammon bundy. concerns over water quality have risen nationwide as the water r crisis in michigan escalates. the high levels of lead found in flint water hah started raising questions about water quality here in siouxland. but, the water and sewer director for the city of norfolk, nebraska, says that's not an issue for his community. "water in norfolk meets or exceeds all epa requirements. we do test for lead and copper. those are the same test, we test for those at the same time, and those are completed every 3 years. we will

lisa cotter said. with little time to grieve, lisa was prepped for surgery. "we had an emergency c- section, and we delivered our daughter, evelynne, healthy," lisa cotter said. "and, our other daughter, elizabeth, was stillborn." "the rest of the day was like a bad dream," said jeremy cotter, father. a dream the famimi couldn't wake up fm... forced to celebrate life, and grieve death, at the same time. "we would have to ask a nurse to go and get our daughter's body from the morgue, or wherever they were keeping her cooled," jeremy cotter said. precious time for a grieving family. but, that grief led to an act of generosity. last month, the cotters started fundraising for what's called a "cuddle cot." made in the uk, the device allows a child's body to be cooled, at a

"we would not have had to send her back to the morgue... every time we were visiting with her," lisa cotter said. the cotters hope they can help other families, dealing with a loss, by donating a "cuddle cot" to unitypoint health- st. luke's, in sioux city. one-person bathroom among other accommodations. wayne community schools is proposing a new gym and performing arts center at both the junior and senior high. the plan also includes a new building for kindergarten and preschool students. last night, community members were able to hear the vision and give their feedback on the proposal. if the school board moves forward d th the plan, it wouou becomeme bond-issue. it's projected to be an $18- million dollar project. wayne schools added a preschool program this year. that program is currently in a leased building. the superintenden t says getting a building for those students and kindergarten would be the next step.
