justice antonin scalia's death, a battle is brewing between the republican-led senate and the white house. a vacancy on the court -- during an election year -- hasn't happened in decades. and those who want to be the next president are weighing in on whether president obama should even try to nominate scalia's successor. nbc's jennifer johnson has our report tonight.

the white house flag is also flying at half-staff, also in honor of the supreme court justice. the debate over insurance companies covering medical treatment for those with autism continues tonight. a bill in 20-10 gave iowa state employees insurance coverage for autism treatments but not for every family. now there's a push in the iowa house and senate for a new bill, that will provide coverage for more than 1 million iowa families affected by autism. ktiv's michelle schoening has the details. for the cobbs, they're living with the struggles of inadequate insurance coverage for their 15-year- old son noah, who suffers from autism. "it's hard to know there is help but we just can't get it," said tina cobbs. when noah was five, he was able to receive applied behavior analysis treatment. but noah has since aged out of a grant which paid for that treatment. "it's recommended by the surgeon general, the cdc, the american academy of pediatrics. what it that does is help he gain and acquire new skills and help in reduce self- injurious behavior," said josh cobbs, parent of child with autism. a proposos bill in the iowa

would require all insurance and treatment plan for those with autism under the age of 22. coverage through state insurance companies for autism treatment for 29-cents per member per month. a co-sponsor of the bill says it's all about providing equal coverage for ioio families. "expandidi to alloloeveryone that type of coverage it would just be a matter of fairness," said rep. dave dawson. cobbs says they aren't asking for advanced coverage, just adequate coverage. "people will continue to ask, well why do you do this? they won't cover them unless we do. they won't cover families like ours unless the state takes action to make sure it happens," said josh cobbs. in sioux city, four. forty-three states in the u.s. have passed sisiilar legislation. the bill has moved forward i the senate through the sub- committees. however, the house

some iowans are hoping for a ban on tanning... that's why some in the hawkeye state are crowding the state capitol this week to see changes in tanning salons. it's not a new proposal: banning state from using tanning beds has been an issue brought up year after year in the state legislature. but this year, the bill is gaining more ground than ever before, and iowans behind the cause are speaking out. risks from tanning incncde melanoma-- which is a type of skin cancer. "so basically, there's going to be around 100 of us going, and what we're trying to do is get a law passed to where no minors under the age of 18 can tan." - lawmakers say even reps from the tanning industry are for this bill because studies show less than two percent of their customers are younger than 18. hundreds of thousands of people gathered today as pope francis held what was expectct to

a 60-car crash o oindiana's intersrste-65 injured at least a dozen people this afternoon. according to local police... icy conditions and low visibility may have caused the pile-up... with drivers moving too quickly and following other vehicles too closely. 12-people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. one person who suffered a broken leg had to be cut out of their car. more than 30 cars were involved

monte morris tied a career high with 24 points - 19 of them coming in the second half. georges niang added 24 points - but one of the big stories was jameel mckay. mckay returned from a two game suspension and notched 8 points, 7 rebound and 4 blocks off the bench. it came at a good time - because iowa state had lost three of four before saturday's win. "for a while, this is the first time that, collectively, we were a real team tonight," said head coach steve prohm. "now, we've got to carry that forward." "i just feel like the last couple games, we didn't really have the will to win," said senior forward georges niang. "we were giving up late leads and stuff like that. we'll use that as motivation. we're just so passionate and we really wanted this win, and i think when you want it that bad, you're going to pull it out. we just need to play every game like that."
