monroeville, alabama. she submitted her manuscript for "to kill a mockingbird" in 1957 and was asked to rewrite it. in july of 1960, the novel, which defined the racial troubles of the deep south, was published. the following year, lee won the pulitzer prize. last year, harper collins published "go set a watchman." the novel was promoted as a sequel to "to kill a mockingbird." for three decades justice antonin scalia served inside the halls of the supreme court... today his remains lie in repose as the nation pays its respect to one of the most influential, and at-times controversial , supreme court justices. nbc's pete williams has more from outside the supreme court...

(nats/ casket arriving / carried up stairs) his casket arrived here earlier today, carried inside by supreme court police officers, as nearly 100 of justice scalia's former law clerks stood on the marble steps -- acting as honorary pallbearers. president and mrs. obama will be here later today to pay their respects, and the supreme court is open to the public today for those who want to file past and say their final goodbyes. then tomorrow, the funeral at the basilicia of the national shrine of the immaculate conception here in washington. vice-president biden will attend. (s/ pete williams / nbc news / washington, dc ) when the two days of ceremonies honoring justice scalia have concluded, president obama may announce his choice of a nominee as early as next week to fill the vacancy on the court. i'm pete williams at the supreme court, back to you. >> a bill that woud impose statewide rules for police body cameras in nebraska is stoking a debate over how and when the recordings should be made public. a legislative committee heard testimony yesterday. the bill would require law enforcement agencies to adopt written policies for body camera. it would also allow police to withhold footage from the public if it's part of an investigation. the police chiefs association of nebraska says written policies should be mandated by

not the legislature. a dallas company canceled plans to build a nearly 31-million dollar rail car maintenance facility in sioux city. trinityrail officials confirmed the news to city officials earlier this month. the company announced the sioux city expansion back in october of 20-14. at that time, there was a surge in tanker cars transporting crude oil and ethanol, which had raised demand for the company's services. as global prices for crude oil drop, so has the demand for tankers. the facility was supposed to create 250 news jobs. an american airlines flight landed safely yesterday after being forced to divert to waterloo, iowa. the pilot declared an emergency after reporting an odor in the cabin. 26-passengers were on board. some said they could smell smoke and that the floor of the plane felt hot. the pilot landed the plane later. the flight was en route to chicago from sioux falls, south dakota. a diffffent plane took

an iowa resident has tested positvie for zika virus. that's according to the iowa department of public health. the resident recently traveled to countries where the virus transmission is ongoing. officials say the older female has a travel history to central america. the medical director says the general public is not at risk of contracting the virus. if you would like to know momo about the zika virir, head o or to our website, ktiv dot com. cubans are welcoming the news that president obama will visit there next month. the historic trip will mark a turning point in u-s relations with a long-time cold war foe. washington and havana restored diplomatic ties in july. but commerce remains limited by the decades-old u-s trade embargo, which includes a ban on american tourism to the island. south korea has welcomed the decision by the u-s to impose further sanctions on north korea. the south korean foreign ministry spokesman said today that the sanctions will ntribute to "make nonoh korea

missile provocations" . on thursday president obama slapped north korea with more stringent sanctions for defying the world and pushing forward with its nuclear weapons program. the move came weeks after north korea launched a sellite- carrying rocket into space and conducted its fourth underground nuclear test. much of siouxland was under a high wind warning this morning. those ferocious winds blew over a semi near merrill, iowa. it happened just before five a-m on highway 75 south of merrill. the plymouth county sheriff says the driver and a passenger were stuck inside the truck for a while, but both escaped with minor injuries. the accident forced authorities to close highway 75 northbound from hinton to merrill for almost four hours. > weather ad-lib high wind warnings in effect for yankton, union, clay, woodbury, plymouth, dakota, & dixon counties until 9 am wind advisory in effect for most of

awareness of blood cancers. it was started after the fraternity lost one of its brothers in new hampshire, taylor trudeau, to leukemia in 2008. "biking for 30 minutes is nothing when someone out there is suffering for the rest of their life, so doing something for 30 minutes and paying money to help them out.. i don't see why you wouldn't do it," said richard culver. more than 130 pi kappa alpha chapters across the country take part in "cycle for life". you know the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words." there's an image that's captured a lot of hearts. many of you have received one of our 2016 around siouxland calendars. but if you take a look at the january photo, it captured an incrcribly rare moment. this photo has connected three families together in an unusual way. ktiv's sarah te slaa explains.

"if it was under 32 degrees he's not allowed to play in the snow, and it was figured what the heck, i'm going to go play in the snow," says paula. because paula rosenboom's request fromom very special young woman. "we were going to take kylie hayworth, we were going to take her and her mother and sister on a flight," says paula. kylie is battling brain cancer. doctors gave her six months to live. "i created a bucket t st because i thought i was going to die," says kylie. "i wanted to try it." nats-balloon set up "we had the balloon set up and they carried her over to the balloon and put her in, we had a chair in there for her to sit," says paula. nats- bye, check it off your bucket list for the first leg of the flight,

her mom above le mars, from the airport to the golf course. way up in the sky, the three talked about life... and death. "it was so peaceful up there and we were just like, "yeah, if something would happen to the balloon and we went down, it would be a good day to die," says kylie. when they touched down, kylie's mother got out, her sister got in and thehetook off again. nats-camera sound that's the moment this photograph captures. it was a ride to remember. "very cool," says kylie. "it was a once in a lifetime experience." "it was a good day," says paula. "as you can see smiles all around. it was a good day." lilile did anyone know t tt this perfect day was abt to turn tragic. "he said he didn't feel right and i said, 'okay. do you want me to stay home?' he said, 'no, go ahead and go bowling,'" says paula.

"i was a little hesitant about putting on my shoes and he called me shortly after and said he had cacaed 911," says paula.a. she got hoho just as they put kim in the ambulence. (nats-door closisi) "i said, 'how are you doing?' and he said, 'i feel a lot better now' and i said, 'okay,' and i met them at the hospital, but i never got to see him again," says paula. (nats-siren) doctors worked to revive kim for two urs, but it was too late. "his heart completely blew apart," says paula. "i was like it can't be true. i just saw him," says kylie. kim died about two hours after this photo was

turns out, the photographer, david moore, had no idea the significance of the flight when he captured the colorful balloon in the distance of the dull landscape. "i've never seen a colorful, hot air balloon any time in january in the middle of winter so i made it a point to follow it and see what it was up to," sasa david. he snapped several that day. capturing kim's last moments without knowing it. "i don't know what to say, you hope as a photographer that your imageshave some kind of an impact on somebody, but you never know," says david. "it's a good memory for us it's hard to be sad when you see something like that and know how much it meant to so many people," says paula. nats-music? "he lived that day to the fullest extent and he was happy and he was happy and calm and content and peaceful and that's a good way to go," it's clear that kim's last day was also h hs best day. sarah te slaa, ktiv news 4. >> since she knows her husband would have wanted their balloon to be flown again, paula plans on selling it soon. as for kylie, she continues treatment for her braiai cancer, but t ctors continue to monitor her.

the number of farms and ranches in nebraska declined again last year. the u-s department of agriculture says the number of farms and ranches in the state went down 400 from the

the number of small farms with less than 100-thousand dollars in revenue declined 500, while the number of large farms increased by 100. the average size of farms in nebraska increased by 7 acres to 928 acres. iowa has lost the bid to house the corporate headquarters of the agricultural company that will form m ter the dupont-dow chemical merger is complete. dupont and dow announced friday the headquarters will be in wilmington, delaware. the new company says they will retain a strong presence in johnston, iowa where dupont pioneer is situated.

>> u.s. stocks are edging mostly lower in midday trading as anothererrop in the price of oil sends energy stocks lower. a new study suggests that more than a third of americans are not getting enough sleep. the c-d-c study analyzed data from more than 400-thousand people in all 50 states and washington d-c. hundreds of thousands reported getting less than the recommended seven hours or more of sleep per day. lack of sleep is associated with health issues like greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and mental illness. the state with the single lowest reported sleep levels was hawaii. south dakota, colorado and
