they say he was hard to find becuase he does not have a permanent address. (sheila) morales' arrest has sparked a conversation about counterfeit cash. (matt) sioux city police officers are reminding siouxlanders to be extra cautious with their bills. ktiv's tommie clark spoke with officers and local businesses about the issue. tommie? matt and sheila, it's something we often don't think about. see this dollar bill? this one is real. but, how do we really know? i spoke with detective bill nice who told me what to watch for and how to differentiate between real and fake. you'd be surprised just how often you could be encountering fake bills.

real money is often thinner than counterfeit money. compare the bill with another of the same value. hold the bill up to the light. for all bills except 1 and 2 dollar bills, there should be a security thread or plastic strip running from top to bottom. "this is one of the types of bills that have been going around. like i demonstrated to you guys earlier when i handed to you and asked you to tell me what's wrong with it and you said the paper feels funny, the color's funny, but you didn't notice it said for motion picture use only," said sioux city detective bill nice. the counterfeit cash you may see in sioux city, can be purchased online, oftentimes only meant to be used in films. detective bill nice says there is a lot of fake money floating through the system in sioux city. one local business owner says the issue dies down as the dollar fades out. (--nat pop of cash register opening--) "i've never had any and honestly any more so much of the business done with us people using charge cards, debit cards, things like that," said karlton's co-owner, kim kletschke.

"it's no different then stealing off their shelves, they're out the money that you give to them that's fake," said sioux city detective bill nice. >> detective nice says if you do think you've encountered fake money, call your local police department. even if you're a little skeptical, it's worth taking it in and having them look at it. matt and sheila? tommie, you got to see a fake bill. could you tell the difference? yes, detective nice showed me a bill and i noticed that it felt different, but i didn't picture use only." nice says that happens too often, people just look at the numbers and not the wording on the bill. definitely sheila? thanks tommie. (sheila) the community of o'neill, nebraska is shaken after a weekend stabbing dead and a man wounded. police were called to this house at 320 east clay street around nine 'o clock saturday night. authorities say the 37- year old woman had been stabbed several times. she was pronounced dead at the

the man, also 37, was also taken to the hospital, but police have not released details about his wounds. their names have not been released, but authorities say there is no danger to the public. o'neill residents expressed shock at such a crime in their community. allen bentz / o'neill resident "a town this size we don't hear about this type of stuff. you always think it's in the bigger cities. but the way things are anymore, anything can happen." brooke buller / o'neill resident "because o'neill's such a small town you don't hear about these things happening very often," johnny engelbart / o'neill resident "i was just wondering who it was and if i knew 'em." the stabbing is under investigation by the nebraska state patrol, the o'neill police department and the holt county attorney's office, which has requested an autopsy. sioux city police say no charges are being filed in a stabbing that sent two brothers to the hospital on sunday, because the men are not cooperating with investigators. police say it appears the men got into an argument and stabbed each other at this home in the 15- hundred block of pierce street. authorities say their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. their names have not been released.

supporters of the bishop heelan catholic schools have more than a million reasons to be thankful, tonight. (matt) 1951 heelan graduate donald gill bequeathed 1-point-4 million dollars to the schools. the bulk of gill's estate will help fund the construction of the academic wing and gymnasium addition for the new bishop heelan high school. the remaining funds will be endowed for college scholarships. the gift will be used for the high school's library and media center. when the project is completed, the library will be named after donald gill's mother, mary, and be known as the "mary l. gill library and media center." the proposed half-cent sales tax hike that would help fund republican governor dennis daugaard's plan to raise teacher pay has survived a difficult political test. house lawmakers voted 47 to 21 to approve the bill, meeting the two-thirds requirement to pass through the house. it now heads to the senate. most of the proposed tax increase would go toward

would go to property tax relief. south dakota governor dennis daugaard plans to meet with a group of transgender people tomorrow. he's trying to decide whether to make south dakota the first in use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their sex at birth. daugaard's office said today the group. the center for equality asked non-profit based out of sioux falls. daugaard hasn't said if he plans to sign the bill into law south sioux city's chamber learned about human trafficking and how to spot the red flags. the siouxland coalition against human trafficking came to talk about sex and labor trafficking awareness. they say it's the number two crime in the united states...and iowa is no exception. chamber members learned how sex trafficking starts as early as 11-years-old. red flags include if the suspected trafficked person doesn't know what town they're in or don't have identification on them. sioux city police officers say they've had a couple instances that are still ongoing investigations. "if you see something that looks abnormal, you see a young person, a young girl with an

man that we call authorities so we're watching out for our young people," said advocate of siouxland coalition against human trafficking, sister shirley fineran. "the perpetrator will generally send out recruiters, people who are out in the community looking for easy targets," said sioux city police youth bureau investigator, kevin mccormick. if you suspect someone is being trafficked, call your local authorities or the national for that number, head on over to ktiv.com and it will be inside the story. iowa lawmakers are looking at a plan to try and make the roads safer for cyclists. ktiv's t.j. springer shows us more.

for cyclists. a bill introduced in the iowa senate would tighten laws governing the way drivers pass cyclists on roadways. it would require drivers to move over to another lane when going around a cyclist. the bill would also broaden the law to include a cyclist in a lane designated for bike travel. and, it will require drivers to actually change lanes when passing a bicycle. bridge stand-up "and one eerie statistic, between 2005 and 2014, 53 cyclists have been killed on busy iowa roads, and with the passage of this bill, senators hope to lower that number." "two years ago, a young boy from my district was killed out riding with some friends on a rural highway, and a passing car didn't allow for enough distance, that the young man was hit and tragically killed." some cyclists on the street believe drivers can come too close for comfort, and

bill can trigger change. says e- cigarettes should be outlawed for minors and should only be used as a last resort to quit smoking. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, the number of middle school and high school students who tried e-cigarettes for the first time tripled in 2013 from 2011. the latest research shows that vaping can be a gateway to nicotine addiction. local health officials say e-cigarettes may still be harmful even if they are labeled as not having any nicotine. "i don't think you recognize that pain as when you're inhaling it," said becky carlson, a health educator at siouxland district health. "so you're more apt to just take a hit and not recognize that it causes some kind of a chemical change in your system." coming up on news 4 at ten, vape

reasons they believe vaping can actually be better on your health. they share personal stories about how they quit smoking. nebraska could have a tougher time passing new restrictions on farming and ranching under a proposed ballot measure. the proposed constitutiona l amendment would guarantee the right to "engage in farming and ranching practices" and prevent the legislature from passing new regulations without a compelling state interest. if approved by voters, nebraska could become the third state to adopt a right-to-farm constitutional amendment. brad's here -- iowa and iowa state are both down in the new poll. iowa hasn't looked sharp for the last couple of weeks, and held a players only meeting this weekend. we'll hear from the hawks. and, iowa state also falls, but hopes to have starting center jameel mckay back on the court tonight.
