begin to play out when the republicans walk on to this stage at the university of houston in just a few hours.. jay gray - nbc news - houston. >> the president's proposal to close the prison in guantanamo bay is continuing to create controversy. the plan involves transferring the bulk of remaining detainees to other countries. the rest -- who can't be transferred abroad because they're deemed too dangerous -- would be moved to an undtermined facility in the united states. most republican lawmakers, remain opposed to moving detainees into the united states, and iowa senator joni ernst belelves no different. "i don't think they shouldlde releasas. these are very bad people that have done horrible things to american citizens. i reject the president's plan and i don't think it's a good idea to close guantanamo," said iowa

with marchchight around the corner, many siouxlanders are wondering how long this taste of spring will last. and, why we have seen warmer weather this early. in scientific terms, this warmth can be attributed by el nino, which is a pattern showing us long term temperatures. for siouxland, this usually means mild conditions and above average temperatures. with spring quickly apoaching, temperatures are expected to stay on this track with more warmth into march. lingering snow and warmer temps can create flooding concerns too but the national weather service says that this should not be a problem. "there's not going to be a whole lot of concern becuase the snow pack is pretty well gone outside of what's left in ditches, shelter belts, and piles that have built up. there isn't really a whole lot of water

it was a day of trial, error and success for a group of siouxland students. "nat pop sound dominos fling and cheering" eighth graders at mater dei nativity in sioux city brought together their resources to come up with "simple machines." these simple machines, called rube goldberg machines, are contraptions that e a challenge to build but perform easy tasks. "they had to use three different simple machines out of the six we learned about and have a minimum of five steps to complete whatever task they went with," said seth sackmann, a sixth grade science teacher at mater dei nativity. "my sixth periododas mixing baking soda and vinegar." students used toy cars, dominos, homemade pulleys and other items

together. "wesed two different pulleys," said collin jackson, an eighth-grader at mater dei inside this side of the pulling, lifting up the card that was blocking the marble which would come down and hit dominos." the students started reading about simple machines and planning about three weeks ago. sackmann says he will be having his students do this again next year. this again next year. still to come on live at five.... the battle between apple and the fbi continues. at the center of the battle, the phone of one of the san bernardino shooters.

they say the apartment building was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. none of the adjacent buildings to the building caught fire. it is unknown at this time how many people were in the apartment or if anyone was injured. a court date has been sesefor the e neill, nebraska man n charged inhe stabbing death of his wife. 37-year old eduardo quintero will be arrainged march 9th on second degree murder charges. he was arrested monday and charged in the stabbing death of his wife, guadalupe quintero, at their o'neill home on saturday. investigators counted 34 stab wounds on n r body. quintero told investigators he stabbed d her because he suspected she was having an affair with another man. an arrest has been made in ad% sioux city home invasion case from 2014. detectives took 24-year- old joseph lanckriet into custody in council bluffs yesterday. two men were accused of forcing their way into a house where a bank manager lived. the suspects demanded she take them to the bank to get money. instead, they went through her purse and stole some cash.

arrested yet. investigators say dna evidence lead them to the arrest of lanckriet. he faces charges of first-degree burglary and robbery. an inmate who walked away from sioux city's work release facility is backckn custody. the iowa corrections department says jacob petty was caught by sioux city police and is being held in the woodbury county jail. the department listed perry as escaped when he didn't return january 26th from an outpatient treatment program. perry was serving a 10- year prison sentence for robbery. he was transferred to work release last ococber. sioux city police sathere was a credit card skimming device on a local gas pump. according to authorities, the skimming device was found on a gas pump at cubby's, which is located at 4200 south york street. police say the device has been removed from the pump. all other pumps were inspected and did not have a skimming device. police urge citizens to monitoror their credit card statements or bank sttements

a court order to apple to help the fbi unlock an iphone was center stage during today's hearing on worldwide threats. several members of congress asked fbi director james comey questions on the topic during the house hearing in d.c.. the case, which involves the iphone 5-c belonging to one of the san bernardino shooters - is unlikely to set a legal precedent, according to comey, who says mobile phone technology will continue to evolve.
