cake's owner opened her door for business friday morning and was greeted with smoke billowing from the building. she was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. chief cordes says the fire started somewhere in the kitchen area and did heavy damage to the building. "there was heavy heat damage to the kitchen area and significant smoke damage throughout the structure," cordes said. "all the inventory within that particular business is covered with a heavy, dark black carbon smoke. so, there's significant damage today at pat a cake." cordes says the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the fire did not spread to any of the adjacent buildings on norfolk avenue. >> fire engulfed a gas station convenience store in charlotte, north carolina. this is an aerial view of this afternoon's fire at the circle k convenience store. flames and thick black smoke can be seen shooting from the roof of the store. at one point, firefighters had to scramble to get off the roof because of the flames. no injuries were reported. gunman, are dead following an hours-long standoff in washington state. (sheila) the shooting happened in the town of belfair, washington... that's about 25-miles southwest of seattle. a local sheriff says the gunman had called 9- 1-1, today, to say he shot and killed his family. authorities say officers negotiated with the man for about three hours before they entered the home and five bodies, including the gunman. a a rl, who survived, has been taken to the hospital. (sheila) the search for answers continues after a man killed three coworkers and injured 14 others in a kansas shooting last night. (matt) nbc's chris pollone has the latest.

josh higbee two other families are feeling the same pain. chris pollone, nbc news, hesston, kansas. >> a northeast iowa man died after he dropped his handgun, and it went off... hitting him in the leg. deputies found someone giving cpr to 45-year-old martin lawrence. the black hawk county sheriff's office says he was taken to a waterloo hospital where he was pronounced dede. investigators say y wrence returned home from w wk and dropped the gun as he gogoout of his vehicle. when the gun hit the ground it fired and the bullet hit his leg causing internal injuries. a plea hearing is set for monday in the case of an akron, iowa, man charged with killing his mother. jonathan neunaber is charged with first-degree murder in the death of esther neunaber in july of 2014. the bodies of both esther and her husband donald were found in their farm home near akron. authorities say donald died of natural causes. jonathan neunaber has pleaded not guilty in the case. in january, he was found competent to stand trial. a sioux city man has been arrested for sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl..

facing sexual abuse charges after, police say, he e xually assaulted a young rl who visited his home. the victim said these acts happened multiple times. police say scott told the victim not to tell anyone about the assault or scott would come after her when he got out of jail. scott is a registered sex offender and has been convicted of sexual assault twice. new details on the credit card skimming incident in sioux city yesterday. a credit card skimming device was found on a gas pump at cubby's, on south york street, near singing hills. police say it was found inside a gas pump when a technician was contacted about an atm reader that wasn't working. "it's got a little computer device that's hooked into it," said jeff harstad, a detective with the sioux city police department. "and what it does is it reads the credit card that has been obtained and it keeps, it stores the data from that credit card, such as the numbers and pertinent data." police say there are currently no suspectin the investigation. police urge citizens to monitor their credit card statements and bank statements if they pay at

on news 4 at six, we spoke with drivers about how the incident affects their trips to gas station. the iowa department of public health says 3 iowans are now testing positive for the zika virus, a disease that has strong ties to birth defects. the health department's zika virus update, w wch was released today, says they're all women. one is between the ages of 41-60, and two others are between the ages of 61-80. the women with the disease have all traveled to different areas, including the caribbean, central america, and south america. none of the women are pregnant. mosquitoes carrying the virus are not established in iowa, so the risk of getting the disease comes only to iowans who travel to zika-affected areas. still to come on live at five.... a shock in the gop presidential race. governor chris christie throws in his support for trump. details... next. and.... looking to catch a movie? we'll break down this weekend's box office openings.

new jersey held the ceremony which marks the 23rd anniversary of the first terrorist attack on the world trade center. family members and servicemen laid roses on the panel as they honored the victims of the attack. on february 26, 1993, a truck bomb exploded below the trade center's north tower killing six people and injuring more than a thousand. fifteen people were killed when suicide bombers hit a shiite religious building and a military checkpoint in baghdad. in one attack, a bomber detonated an explosive belt among people leaving a shiite place of worship. another bomber then hit the checkpoint, killing five people... three of them were soldiers. isis has claimed responsibility for the attacks. cyberattacks on the internal revenue service may have been seven times larger than initially reported. a new government review found hackers potentially gained access to 720-thousand taxpayer data files starting in february 2015. that's about 390-thousand more than initially reported.

a power outage brought business, and a local school to a halt, today. (sheila) if you're just getting home here's a quick look at today's headlines. a power outage, in whiting, caused many businesses and even the high school to close early. the cause was a hot line clamp on a powerline that needed repair. the hot line clamp connects the wire to the line. five people, including the gunman, are dead following an hours-long standoff in washington state. the shooting happened in the

the entire sector's overall score. the price of a first class stamp will soon go down... but, it's not a sale or promotion... back in 20-14, the u-s postal service was granted permission to temporarily increase stamp prices ... the price hike was contingent upon a planned price drop this year. that surcharge is slated to end april 10th. evenflo is recalling about 56-thousand combininion booster seats... over a concern children may access the seat's harness adjustst button and loosen the harness. the recall involves evenflo's transitions 3- in-1 combination booster seats manufactured before january 29th. evenflo says the problem only affects the seats when they're used as forward-facing harnessed boosters. if the harness does not fit snugly, that increases the chance of injury in a crash. no injuries have been reported.
