in tonight's heathe holidays can often lead to overindulgence. we eat more... we drink more... and we run on less sleep. and for some it can lead to excess strain on the heart. experts say overeating and overindulging in alcohol can lead to an irregular heartbeat known as 'holiday heart syndrome.' doctors advise you to be on the lookout for foods that are heavy in cream, sugar, or salt and to avoid drinking
6:47 pm
and while they don't recommend you avoid all holiday treats at all costs... you should be mindful of what you eat and how much you eat. "often times people are like, 'oh my gosh, you know i can't have anything.' no you can have everything you want, except you have to have it in moderation and be mindful about what you're eating." :11 doctors say one way to avoid overindulgence if you're going to a holiday gathering... eat something before you go so you're not too hungry. it's fairly common knowledge that stress can affect your health. but a new study out today also suggests it can hurt you in other ways.. and it's something you'll want to remember. abc's dr. timothy johnson explains. driving that long commute. a deadline in the office. caring for a spouse with a long-term illness. we're all familiar with stress, in its many guises. and most of us know by now that it can have a detrimental effect on our health. now, new research out of a new york city study of aging? suggesting that stress might even be linked to impaired memory. researchers looked at more than five hundred healthy people
6:48 pm
least 70 years old? surveying them on how much stress they felt daily, whether their lives felt overloaded, uncontrollable or unpredictable. those who reported the highest leels of stress initially? had more than double the rate of memory problems three years later [i think it was 3 years, yes?]. the reasons for the connection? not entirely clear. more research is needed to figure out the link. but it's another reminder that the stress you carry? may be more harmful than you think. another reason to take a deep breath?get some exercise, and remind ourselves to relax every now and then. with this medicalinute, i'm dr. timothy jnson. we'll be right back with a final check on your forecast from bryan. your watching channel 13 action news... where you ask and we investigate. stay with us.
