safety in the area. an update now to some breaking news we brought you earlier former clark county commissioner tom collins was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a multiple-vehicle crash on friday night. you may remember back in 2012 collins was charged with two misdemeanors on the fourth of july for firing his pistol on his north las vegas property. collins reportedly told police he was mad at a tree and admitted he was drunk. collins resigned from the clark county commission in august, citing family matters. marilyn kirkpatrick was selected as his replacement for commission district b. it's been a dangerous year for pedestrians in the valley -- especially on boulder highway. 4 people have been killed there this week alone...attempting to cross those 6 lanes of traffic. action news reporter david schuman is live with answers on what makes it so dangerous -- and what can be done. david experts say one of the problems is you have all these destinations up and down boulder highway..like arizona charlie's behind me...with no crosswalks to get to them.

have taken notice of the pedestrian deaths -- and experts are fighting for changes. 111100 "it's dangerous, you will die. don't take a chance." sadly, it's all too common for people to take the chance of crossing boulder highway without a crosswalk. 110428 erin breen "no one ever thinks it's going to be them and there has been far too many lives lost on this street this year." 11 on boulder highway this year, according to experts. it was enough for leedel matthews to quit jaywalking. 111307 matthews "not after seeing all these people dying. i'll just take my time, i'll just be a little slower, a little later but i'll get home in one piece." it's unrealistic to expect every pedestrian to trek to a crosswalk, which are few and far between. so advocates say a first step is simply to add more. 110839 breen "if we had more crosswalks, drivers would get more used to looking for people." until then, experts urge people to remember that this street is called a "highway" for a reason.

safely walked away from this scene. firefighters say the man was driving on interstate 280 in san jose... when a metal ramp fell off of a truck and crashed into his windshield. the driver was able to pull to the side of road and get out of the car. he walked away with just a scratch. the war against package thieves just got a lot more interesting. take a look at this video you first saw on action news. you'd expect the owner of the home to be a little upset with the guy who stole from hhm- but the jokes on the crook. the box was full of dog poop. michael burton reports. putting it in a box and that's what i did. i put it in there, and taped it up and wrote the address on it and it sat out there for 4 days and they finally came and got it." it all went down thursday at about 1:30 the surveillance camera above the front door captures the man taking the box - while the camera above the garage reveals his accomplice. fed-up with all the recent reports of local package theft - eric burdo felt dog poop was the perfect way to tell thieves - stay away. not only was eric trying to teach them a lesson, he also wanted to make sure new surveillance cameras were in good spots. eric's home is near charleston and nellis boulevard. he says he bought the cameras because someone broke into his car a few months after he moved in. eric put the package on his porch - sunday - but it wasn't taken until thursday. that's when he sat through the surveillance video - shocked at how young the perpetrators looked. he expected them to be much older.

rampart and alta. our very own beth fisher was the emcee for today's event. more than one thousand runners and walkers were out there this morning. the event helps those suffering from arthritis. nearly 53 million americans deal with arthritis in some form. the clark county fire department held a community open house this afternoon at fire station 23. the event coincided with the annual firefighters' "fill the truck" toy drive. a donation box was there for visitors to drop off new, unwrapped toys or gift cards. people who went got a tour of the firestation as well as flu shots. the 4th annual downtown throwdown barbecue championships also took place today. it featured a chili cook-off and barbecue cook-off. foodies got to enjoy delicious samples from some of the best barbecue cooks around. more than 32 teams from all over the western u-s competed for a share of a 10- thousand dollar prize..they also got a shot at an invite to one of two world championship contests.
