also, we were encouraged by the level of optimism. almost three quarters of respondents feel that they're going to be financially better off in 2016 than 2015. >> that's good news. which financial resolutions made the top three lists this year? >> well, number one is saving more, especially for long-term saving such as retirement. number two, spending less. and number three, paying down debt. especially credit card debt. >> do you feel that it's important to make a resolution? >> actually, the act of making a resolution is linked to it abouter financial wellness. so we see that for people who made a financial resolution, in 2015, they are actually in better financial shape, more optimistic, more debt free. so there's a certain virtue or cycle of setting a goal and intention helps you achieve it and helps you feel better and

>> do you have any tips or easy steps for people to help achieve resolutions and goals? >> don't take on the world. you don't have to get after everything at once. pick one goal and stick with it. and then keep your eye on that prize. when we look at people who are successful in keeping the financial resolutions, what they say is that the number one factor for feeling motivated is seeing the bottom line impact making progress along the way. that's how people really turn those resolutions into habits. >> now, the end of the year is obviously wrapping up. is there anything that we can do right now to help us with our taxes or investments? anything that we can do to make it easier for us before we start 2016? >> sure. as we approach the end of the year it's a great time to get your financial house in order, make sure you're set up for success going into the new year. we have top ten list of actions you can take before year end, and it includes as an example

taking full advantage and saving as much as you can in retirement savings accounts. if you're planning on making any charitable contributions do that before the year-end tax deadline. >> what about doing these automatic deductions? does that really help people get to their goals? >> it really does. so putting it on auto will take the bite out of any feeling that you have that's going to impact your lifestyle. if you set up automatic deductions into a savings plan you're probably really not going to notice the difference, and your ability to increase that a little bit every year or when you can is going to make a huge impact over the long-term. >> what about people who are watching right now and they're saying to themselves i haven't started saving yet. is it too late? how do they start? they get confused or they give up because they don't know what to do. >> so it really is never too late to start. and there are so many different actions that you can take to get
