tv   Action News 330pm  ABC  December 15, 2015 3:30pm-4:00pm PST

3:30 pm
>> rikki: right now on action news live at 3:30, republican candidates, two hours away from taking the stage at the venetian. donald trump is still leading in the polls. eight other candidates hoping to take him down. a live look right now, the candidates were expecting warm disappointed. we'll be flirting with freezing temperatures tonight. let's toss it over to our bryan scofield and weather first. >> that flirt is going to lead to a date. the freezing numbers tonight. in quite a few areas. out through mojave county and the colorado river valley as well. hard freeze warnings in the dark blue areas, down to searchlight, to prim, folks in par you mean of, colorado river valley freeze warning in general. what's the difference? we're talking 20s with the hard freeze.
3:31 pm
along with colorado. still a little breeze in there. surprising it would be freezing in so many areas because the winds usually help stir that up. we're relatively clear. tonight it will start off chilly and end off chillier yet. so bundle up for tonight. grab that scarf, grab the hat and certainly gloves not a bad idea. and the freeze is going to last a little bit longer. i'll tell you how long it will last coming up. >> we know where it's going to be hot tonight. the stage at the venetian. turning now to our red white and blue 2016 political coverage and taking a look at marco rubio, who arrived at the venetian just a few hours ago, taking a few moments to walk around the stage before tonight's debate. for the next 24 hours, las vegas is the center of the political world. and steve had a chance to talk to some of the major players just a short time ago. >> steve: just under seven weeks until the iowa caucuses and safe to say things are getting
3:32 pm
voters haven't always run with the pack. it wouldn't be the first time they've changed the political future of an underdog. and for those underdogs, tonight's debate one of their last chances to make an impression. the theater was designed for phantom of the opera. nine podiums, right next to donald trump, center stage, the senator ted cruz, showing new life in recent polls. even though barely finding their way onto the main stage say there's reason to believe they still have a shot. >> you've seen ben carson come down 20 points in the last three weeks. somebody else is up as he comes down. when we see trump stumble and fall or trip over his tongue to think. you'll see others rise. >> who goes on the attack? a hail mary political move that could backfire. if republicans are concerned these debates will fracture the party, they're not showing it so far.
3:33 pm
republicans will come around and collect around their nominee because that's the wait we're going to beat hillary clinton. >> donald trump spent much of the day attacking cnn and fox news, who he accuses of downplaying polls which show him with a healthy lead in iowa and new hampshire. whether he keeps that lead could depend a lot on what happens tonight. in las vegas, back to you. >> rikki: two steves in the house on this political coverage. outside now a live look at the venetian where the candidates take the stage, in less than three hours. getting down to the wire here. let's toss it over to our steve, who is staying on top of things in the spin room. steve, you've seen some of our nevada republicans walking through. >> steve: we saw senator dean hiller a little while ago, on his way to get something to eat,
3:34 pm
give us an interview later. jackie spoke with another congressman. he was over my shoulder a second ago -- there he is. straight ahead. he's in the room right now. and talking with reporters. just to give you a little preview of what he told jackie, he is predicting that ted cruz will win iowa. and he's also saying that he and main others in the republican party strongly disagree with some of the comments made by donald trump in recent days about his proposed moratorium on allowing syrian refugees into the u.s. and to elaborate just a little bit on what the other steve was saying a moment ago about the voters cleaving, there's a lot of feeling out there that, as we get farther into the republican primary season, we'll see donald trump, he's got the core of supporters, and then it's going to come down to some other
3:35 pm
rubio, possibly dr. ben carson, and the rest of the republican voters will begin to coalesce around one of them, whoever is still standing. so before it's all said and done, we'll have two or three republican candidates still in the race as we go into the convention in cleveland. so this will all work itself out, but of course tonight is going to be a big process. and one person to watch just on a hunch, don't know why, chris christie. he's on the big stage tonight, and just watch for him to try to make a lot of noise. >> rikki: steve, why does iowa always come out as this big major player, but there's so many guys who win iowa and then don't go on to win the nomination? >> steve: that's true. iowa is a big player because it's first. they get the jump on things. new hampshire also important. but when you're first, there's a lot of attention. it's a caucus, not a vote. but whoever comes out of there
3:36 pm
again, i'll refer it back to rick santorum in my last bit, santorum did well in the iowa caucuses a few years ago but didn't realize he actually won it until about a week later when they finally had everything tall idea up. but it didn't do much for his campaign or his political career. it's nice to win it, but it's definitely not -- your campaign isn't going to hinge on the outcome of iowa. >> rikki: absolutely. we'll see what impact tonight's debate has. we'll check in with you again, steve. our debate coverage continues throughout this afternoon into the evening. we'll check back with steve in a few minutes and you can get additional coverage on our website, ktnv.com, and on our facebook and twitter pages. former baseball star pete rose will not be getting into the hall of fame any time soon. the mlb commissioner considered lifting his lifetime ban but announced rose will not be reinstated.
3:37 pm
today at his las vegas bar & grill. >> pete rose started by thanking the commissioner, saying he understood the decision. he actually took full ownership of being a gambling man back in the day. he went on to say that he couldn't be disappointed because he is disappointed. rose is still widely regarded as one of the best players of all time and many of his records still stand today. he said multiple times during the press conference that he doesn't want necessarily to be in the hall of fame. he just wants to be a part of the sport that he loves. >> all i want to be, all i -- all i look forward to being someday is friends of baseball. i want baseball and pete rose to be friends. that's all i want. so i can say, i'm not an outsider looking in. i've got grandkids.
3:38 pm
associated with baseball. that's all. >> this is such a big topic that hours before the presidential debate, even donald trump took the time to tweet about this, saying that he thinks rose should be reinstated. reporting, channel 13 action news. >> rikki: a short list jogger is getting plenty of attention on social media. caught running in the rain
3:39 pm
he's running away from >> rikki: now trending, my producer said i'm going to love this picture and i do. from our sister station in denver. the person who took the photo captioned it, this is how coloradons roll. you can find more pictures like this under the now trending tab on our website, ktnv.com.
3:40 pm
gotta do something to lift your spirits. >> bryan: it was taste any done. we'll leave it that way. no bathrobe. don't do that. take a look. let's see some of the numbers out there. the threshold to really even see a wind chill, you have to get below 50 degrees, that's why the numbers are matching up. winds out of the north northwest at five. still making it feel cooler than the actual temperature. 16 miles per hour wind. we've had gusts at 25 or so across the valley. some areas probably heard the howling wind. we're relatively clear, relatively tame out there considering what we've had of late. for tonight, things really start to cool down where as we really got rid of one storm and it's been plaguing four corners and out to denver, down to the south here things are starting to shape up and over the course of the next few days, mornings will get a little bit warmer. we might still have a day or two of freezing numbers.
3:41 pm
i hate to use the word warm because it doesn't mean what you want it to mean. we really want nicer numbers. what we don't have coming in is any sort of cold air mass again. we will get things a little milder and no storms coming in just yet to bring any rain or snow. we did well in the local mountains, to the tune of several inches, but save conditions across the valley. probably one of the best places to be across the nation. now, as we cool things down for tonight, probably between the 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. hour we'll drop to the freezing mark and you can see the numbers tomorrow morning will stay there in the 30s. so bundle the kids up. anyone getting out the door, you will need that, don't fool yourself, dress in layers, because it's so much easier without that big jacket when you can add or subtract layers. either way, put on what you have to, especially out in the evening hours. even for a thursday night, with temperatures getting to the 50-degree tonight, overnight lows will be in the 30s to the end of the week. and then afternoon highs into the 60s for a good portion of
3:42 pm
we keep breezes in and then next week we might change it up with maybe another quick moving disturbance through the area. still a little bit warmer than what we've seen. back to the desk. >> rikki: at least you took the rain out of the forecast for the beginning of the week. you just saw the guy laying with just his shorts on in the snow in denver. now we've got a tv interview with a man in chicago, without a shirt on. what's going on. but it's getting him a lot of love. a reporter, who is well-dressed for the winter, caught up with ethan sunday night as he was running shirtless along lake michigan in the warm and rainy weather. the resulting video got more than 27,000 likes, more than 17,000 shares, and thousands of comments on facebook. >> it's really been crazy.
3:43 pm
i have to sort through. >> tell us all about it. >> like 3,000 something comments. >> rikki: his woman lets him run around without a shirt on? really? in the video, he said it was too wet to wear shirts and he loves running in the rain but he said he was single. now, he said he was single when he talked to this reporter but

3:47 pm

christmas, "shark tank" can at go traffic. >> rikki: before judge judy, i look at some of the top stories and braking news before we went on the air. police say this man, a substitute custodian, is being so disgusting we can't tell you about it. he is accused of going into the same elementary school classroom about 36 times, pulling down his pants and doing things that landed him multiple counties of open and gross lewdness, poisoning food, malicious destruction of property. police say he left plenty of evidence behind. there is also video of him in the act.
3:49 pm
down by a terror threat today but we learned that the threat was not credible. school officials in new york city received the same threat but they stay open. here they tell us they're always prepared just in case. the latest poll from abc news showed donald trump has a 23-point lead over his nearest competitor, ted cruz. marco rubio, jeb bush, rounding out the top five. they're going to argue their plans to keep our country safe. we have steve out there covering that for us live. coming up on action news live at 5:00, we'll have more on the fallout from today's terror threat in long angeles. you'll hear how officials are preparing. and we are preparing for a little bit of a cold snap. >> bryan: that is true. still some of the best weather around but tonight we'll get down to freezing, probably one more night thereafter.
3:50 pm
warm up to afternoon highs so by the weekend things look nice but we'll pick up some wind so there's a possibility it might feel a little cooler. we do have a disturbance coming through early next week, it doesn't look like it means much for us but an outside chance for a shower. it won't drop temperatures down dramatically because most of this stays to the north at this point. so setting up next week, which is a big week for so many people, maybe they're out of town, maybe they're not enjoying what we have, but, really, enjoy the weather the next few nights. >> rikki: sounds good. before we go, a wedding proposal so epic it shut down traffic in houston. the 24-year-old says he often takes his girlfriend for a drive on the highway, how they met and fell in love, but when he pulled over during a weekend ride, michelle didn't expect him to get down on one knee and pop the question. >> love makes you do stupid things. >> i'll never forget, forever. >> also we're leaving out the
3:51 pm

3:52 pm
>> that does it for >> announcer: the promise of a bargain. >> judge judy: you turned the money over to them. they got the car. >> correct. >> announcer: but... >> judge judy: where's the car now? >> i have since sold it. >> announcer: ...was there funny business involved? >> judge judy: what was the amount of the check? >> $3,175. >> judge judy: and you paid $3,180 for the car. >> mm-hmm. >> should i sue for $5, then? >> judge judy: the name of the program is "judge judy." when you are deemed amusing enough, someone will offer you your own show. >> announcer: "judge judy." you are about to enter the courtroom of
