help redefine victory over cancer in a bold stance to support families touched by the disease, the american cancer society lawn much muched a new public awareness campaign. here with more former nfl player chris draft. chris is a nfl ambassador and national spokesperson on many health related issues. good morning to you, chris. >> good morning. >> you got involved with the american cancer society because of your wife. can you tell us what happened? >> absolutely. so my wife was diagnosed with lung cancer in december of 2010. and unfortunately passed a year later, in december of 2011. but not before we were able to get married. and on that day we made two commitments. one commitment to each other, and the other one to the cancer community as a whole. and we know with -- we know research is important but we also have to appreciate the people that are going through
9:10 am
we have to love them along that way. about. that's why i'm excited to be part of the american cancer so sigh eighth advantage human campaign, because we're redefining victory over cancer by talking about these emotions, talking about the traits that really carry someone through their cancer journey. those traits can be hope, it can be devotion. it can be courage. it can be anger. or it can be tenacity, as you can see back here, that really -- that takes you through the cancer journey. >> do you feel like you got through it also with the support that you had with family and friends and the people from the american cancer society? >> oh, tremendous. family and friends were so important throughout my wife's cancer journey, it was only a year.
9:11 am
and they really stayed true to the chips that we have that really -- they were there. they said let -- you know, they made sure that they were there. so the holidays can be a tough time. my wife was diagnosed in december of 2010. and passed in december of 2011. so if someone is out there and it's here. it's here at the holidays. so it was important. our family friends they let my wife know they were there. there. that they didn't just talk, that they listened. they listened to her and they listened to me. and sometimes you just don't know what to say. and that's when they give a hug and give us that energy. but the most important thing was that they allowed my wife to be more than cancer, allowed her to be her, be keishat. amazing
9:12 am
cancer. but always key keisha. >> now, can you tell us a little bit more about the campaign that you were working on, the advantage humans initiative? >> so you know, it's about survivors, about caregivers, they're going through. and so when we talk about cancer, we want to make it clear that we're not fighting against people. we're fighting for people that are -- that have these range of motions that are diverse. cancer can touch anyone. advantage humans is about making sure it's clear that's who we're fighting for. we're fighting for humans, and why. why. because they're amazing. they are awesome. but along that way they need help. and they need help. and that's why you can go to cancer.org, that's why groups like american cancer society are doing what they're doing.
9:13 am

9:14 am
9:15 am
we will be right back. we all deal with stress and work and busy schedules and unexpected expenses. most of us expect that to ends when we retire but will it? two advisers nick strobelt and abe ashton are here from ashton strobelt with more. great to see you. people think retirement is all simple and easy and you gotten
9:16 am
not that way necessarily. >> some people think it's going to be an endless vacation and that is scary because you know vacations we get in the habit of going and spending. we sometimes budget enough to go out and play and buy things, go out and remember the trip by eating out every single night, and while a lot of retirees come into our office and say we don't know what day of the week it is because it's all a saturday, that isn't one of the benefits of retirement, but we can't have the same spending habits we have when we're on vacation. so we have to think of managing the money and the income the same way we were when we were working although we don't have to take the time card and punch in and out at 5:00 every day. having a with budget on spending stress. >> you need a budget even when you retire? >> of course. your income sources are going to be more fixed. you hear people talking about living on a fixed income. what does that mean? it means i only got my pension
9:17 am
cases, and so with those two sources of income there's not social security. you're not going to get a big raise where you got a 20% raise in social security. 2016 is one of those years where there is no cost of live ago justment at all. and so people are living on i affixed income like social security, you got to be able to budget that money. there's no secret way to get a bunch of money unless you want to go back to work. >> what kind of things might come up during retirement that are unexpected? >> oh, wow, that's a great -- big question. >> all of them. >> anything could happen that's unexpected. but that's what throws people off. they think retirement is going to be according to an exact plan that you think 15 years in advance, but then a wrench gets thrown in, and a plan, a proper plan can account and be manageable and and flexible enough to account for the things that get thrown in the mix, is what someone needs in retirement. from a loss of a spouse to
9:18 am
the i had cans or grandkids, have to move states, anything that can change it up. but a proper plan can account for that. >> you can have a medical emergency, the furnace goes, something could happen and you're not prepared for it because you did not budget for it. >> a lot of people when they come into our office their number one concern is investments, talking about their 401(k), the savings accounts that they saved to last until the rest of the life until one of those unforeseen things. if all of a sudden the ball answers of your account dropped by 25% and you have 75% of what you had just a month earlier you start rethinking the way you view retirement. you start to rethink okay, wait a second, i thought i could get by with x dollars but something happened in a whole different country, you know, globally, financially, something happened in greece and my accounts here, my little ira has gone down and i don't know how i'm going to deal with that.
9:19 am
conservative that will mitigate and reduce risk becomes important. >> that's the last thing you want to worry about is a financial crisis affecting you and telling you to go back to work and thinking do i have to live with my kids now? vital. >> think of the people that come into our office that come in like with a more aggressive plan than you would recommend for their age? say. >> over half are way more aggressive than they realize. >> new people coming in to our office come in and way more -- more than half come in and more aggressive than they should be in their investing. >> that's why you have to look at their plan or their portfolio maybe every -- how often should you look at it? every six months? >> we look at it as often as the client wants to but we do annual reviews, and quarterly, we have weekly e-mail updates. we have lots of daily monitoring. that's the beauty of technology.
9:20 am
happening every day, even get text messages on certain events. they're more in control and more attached to their balances than ever before because of technology. >> as you get closer to retirement you don't want to be as aggressive as someone who just got their first job. and has a lot of time to save money. >> that's a common conversation we have when someone comes in, we say you're not 35-years-old anymore, not 40-years-old. you're 70, and you shouldn't be investing like a 40-year-old. and often it's a fun conversation to have. >> we'll say just imagine in 12 months your account goes up 50% how happy would you be, would it change what you are. if we say your accounts lost 50% would that change how you view the future? for a 60-year-old it would be devastating. >> you have a special offer, as well. what is that? >> i think we got stress free retirement books. we're doing them for the next 30 minutes.
9:21 am
great because they are always sold out. we appreciate that we got enough that we can give them away for the next 30 minutes for those people who call into our office. >> so act fast, get that right now. >> 30 minutes, so call in and we'll have some of those books ready to mail out to people. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> again, if you call ashton strobelt within the next 30 minutes you'll receive a free copy of stress free retirement by patrick kelli. ashton strobe is a proud sponsor of "the morning blend" and providing the prices for this giveaway. be sure to tune in each and every thursday morning here on the blend for more information on ashton and strobelt and how they can help you retire successfully. they are located on in henderson. you can also check out their website or call the number listed. still to come on the blend, the baseball phenom being honored tonight in downtown. and next, tarralyn ramsey hits our stage to get you into the holiday spirit.

9:26 am
you can get it off of itunes. it's called tarralyn ramsey the season for miracles. >> do you plan on releasing another cd? >> maybe next year. the new show definitely after this show is based on the record, so next year i'll have a new album coming out. >> how much time do you spend writing and recording versus performing? >> that's a crazy question. lately it's been no time. but i think right after the show i'm going right back in the studio. and on the weekends i'm going to try to get back in the studio and finish recording. >> we're going to look out for that. you're going to perform for us. what is the name of the song? >> the original christmas song, but it's my way. >> okay. >> the chestnut song. >> take it away, tarralyn.
