front office of the apartment complex when he encountered the suspect. >> reporter: did you find a weapon the suspect? >> i haven't been told so. >> reporter: you don't know if he was armed at the time of the arrest. >> no, i don't. i haven't been told. >> reporter: do you know if he has a criminal history? >> don't know that yet. >> reporter: was there an exchange of gunfire? >> there was. our officer fired i don't know how many shots, but he didn't believe he had hit the suspect. it's yet to be told whether the suspect sustained any injuries. >> reporter: was that officer able to give you any details? >> his description we obtained through investigative means pretty much matched what we had, what we were looking for. so that was beneficial in that aspect. >> reporter: can you elaborate on the confrontation between the officer and the suspect? >> well, you know, i don't want you to keep digging for investigative details because that is ongoing.
6:01 pm
to be charged through the court system. we want to ensure that occurs appropriately. but as he was walking towards the front office, there was a verbal exchange with the individual. they were questioning each other as to why they were at that location. and then shortly thereafter in a short period of time, the suspect produced a weapon and fired on the officer. >> reporter: what would you say about the public's behavior throughout this, the cooperation or what have you? >> it's been absolute. i had the opportunity to return to my office for a short period of time and to check out the network news. we were getting a lot of leads this. i even saw an individual citizen provided a video associated with the event, which was beneficial. so i'm proud of the community and their efforts to help us and do our job in the police environment. everybody knows what's going on across the nation. it's very -- our officers are dealing with that on a daily basis.
6:02 pm
all the officers associated with the investigation did a fantastic job. as you can see within a short period of time, the suspect was in custody. >> reporter: kind of a byizarre moment after leaving that luncheon, you came face to face with the suspect. >> that is bizarre, isn't it? i'm still a police officer. i still have all my post training and everything else, but it's not about me. it's not about me. it's about everybody else associated with the event. i just was glad i was able to participate a little bit in that. >> reporter: was he taken into custody at a house or -- >> it was a residence. i don't have the address. but it was -- it was a non-event over there. immediately upon our arrival at the associated residence, he exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. >> reporter: does this stuff put you on an extra high alert? the shooting of an officer always high alert, but because of what's been going on? >> it rises to a different level when an individual shoots a
6:03 pm
granted, if you're a victim of a crime, you're just as important to us as we are when our own officers become victims. you have to think of the mind-set of a suspect that is willing to take on a police officer and fire upon a police officer. you know, and attempt to take that person's life. that rises to a complete different level. it's a larger concern for the public themselves associated with that type of crime. but the question at hand is are we on pins and needles? in some aspects we are. the most dangerous job in the police department is that individual patrol officer in a uniform that is responding to an unknown call and has limited information. i always say that from the very beginning. they have the most dangerous job on the police department. because they don't know what's on the other side of that door or what's inside that car. so -- they do a great job doing it on a daily basis. >> reporter: randy sutton was saying on air that police officers, patrol officers, have a warrior mind-set to be shot
6:04 pm
duties to fire back on that suspect. can you speak to that in regards to what happened today? >> well, i guess that's a good descriptive as far as a warrior mind-set if they're encountering an incident. i don't portray my officers having a warrior mind-set in dealing with citizens on a new routine job. if an incident does occur, they have to adjust their attitude and adapt that warrior mind-set. prior to that, hopefully they're professional, courteous and they interact the way they should. because they have the training successful. so that's all i would say on that. >> reporter: you mentioned a chance encounter. how rare and surprising is it for you to run into someone [inaudible] how rare is it this happens? >> the question is how often or how rare this happens. in my opinion, it's very rare.
6:05 pm
across the nation together, it doesn't seem like it's rare. individually within a community, it's very rare. i'm happy for that fact. because we don't want society thinking it's okay to ever encounter anybody with a weapon, no matter who it is. i can't comment on that. >> reporter: can you speak to the presence of mind of the officer to be able to return fire -- >> you think about that. the presence of mind. i mean, this officer, in my mind, is an absolute hero. had the presence of mind to protect his own safety and be concerned for the safety of everybody else. and to engage this individual and hope for the best outcome. i hope the training that we provided him helped him to be successful. i think we did. i'm so happy that this guy is going to have a successful life, and we're not responding to a funeral later down the road.
6:06 pm
force? >> approximately 21 years. he's had a stellar career. i think it's great, 21 years and he's out there working patrol. that's exactly the kind of officers that we need. >> reporter: do you know if he's ever fired his duty weapon before? >> i don't know. standard protocol, we'll have a 72-hour brief that will get into more intimate details on the investigation, and then we'll provide those kind of questions. so as you know, we've had two previous ois's recently. monday we'll provide -- we'll get a briefing on that. i apologize for that delay because of the proximity of events. tuesday we'll provide that briefing. shortly after that, we'll provide the briefing associated with this event. >> reporter: what's the mood like at metro? this is the third shooting we've had recently. >> right. in my travels, especially today, the mood is still good. we have a great police department. the people that work there are great. and the mood is good.
6:07 pm
i interacted with 20 to 30 of the police officers, and they're all great. they're doing a good job. >> reporter: we understand there was a second officer involved? >> the original call had two officers respond. the other officer was on a different part of the complex. he heard the gunshots, and he expressed over the radio he believed that his officer was involved in a shooting. he immediately responded to where the gunshots were heard and was able to render aid. he's doing good. he's a little upset. i talked to him for quite a while at the hospital. but he's doing the best he can. and we provide great services associated with these type of events. >> reporter: what can you tell us about the performance of your officers today? >> they did great. what do you think? i think they did fantastic. the way they set up the perimeter, the way they had command and control out here, the way they kept the public informed. i was watching our pio on the air.
6:08 pm
i think he did a great job. we're doing the best we can. you know what? the second part of that is we're soliciting you to help us, to get that information out there and maybe you'll have a citizen call in and say i know where this guy is. so -- all right? thank you very much. i appreciate it. >> that was sheriff joe lombardo. you heard from him in the news conference near the scene of the crime as he enumerated some of the details of what happened. we're hearing the injured officer was a 21 year veteran of the force, still working patrol. he's in good spirits and is doing well. they'll have to keep him overnight because of his injuries. we're hearing more about this. there's still a lot of unanswered questions. we don't know the motive behind this. we do know that the officer and the suspect exchanged words officer. he did return fire, but lombardo hurt. he doesn't know whether the suspect still had his weapon him
6:09 pm
he doesn't know why he shot at his officer. there's a lot of questions, chief of which how he got from here all the way to southern highlands. they think he may have gotten a ride with somebody because he traveled a great distance very quickly. there may have been somebody else involved, at least in that capacity, whether this was pre-arranged or whether it was somebody he found that is still yet to be determined. although they're investigating right now. they have the suspect in custody right now. so still a lot of answers to some of our questions. a lot still we don't know the answers to. as lombardo said, there's some things they won't reveal. they don't want to hurt the case if it goes to court. we'll be finding out more eventually in 72 hours, probably around next wednesday when they have a briefing on the shooting. there have been several recent ones.
6:10 pm
on tuesday and they'll brief us on this one on wednesday. so stay with ktnv. we'll be on top of that and bring you more information as soon as they release it and it becomes available to us about what happened here. just to recap, it started at the emerald suites. an unrelated call. an officer was struck. the suspect is in custody. he was found in the southern highlands area. thank you. thank you for joining us and staying with us from the moments after the shooting tonight. we are on action news live at 6:00. we are continuing to cover this breaking news that we are following. we were the first on the scene, the first above the scene, and we are going to continue our coverage throughout this next hour. again, action news live at 6:00. you're taking a look at the mugshot of the shooting suspect who was arrested. this came to us from a police source about a half hour after the arrest. even now they have not
6:11 pm
you are only seeing this here on action news. >> reporter: the sheriff was reluctant to pass along the identity of the suspect. this is video from chopper 13. at this point, this has been about an hour ago of the arrest being made. we were able to watch this unfold on live television for you from chopper 13. this is the guy that was the source of about a four, five-hour manhunt. a massive police effort before they were able to box him in. parkway. he was in a sedan you see off camera boxed in by the metro officers and taken into custody. >> we're so grateful we have had our crime and safety expert, a retired lieutenant, metro lieutenant, randy sutton with us to walk us through the incredible tactical work being done leading up to this arrest that we shot with chopper 13. >> pleasure to be here. >> tell us your perspective on
6:12 pm
really quickly. >> this was really evidence of a tremendous police response, professionalism that was displayed from the outset. first the fact that the police officer who was shot had the warrior mentality and spirit to, even though he was injured, to engage the suspect in gunfire, that was the beginning of the heroism. then the police response was tremendous. they locked the area down as best they could. then it culminated in what was clearly amazing detective work where they identified the suspect and apprehended him without any further violence. appreciated your involvement this. everyone in our newsroom has been dedicated to the story. tonight we have three crews in the field. we start with jacqui where this
6:13 pm
>> reporter: that sedan, the silver sedan behind the white truck is the suspect vehicle that that shooting suspect was taken out of. we talked to some witnesses who watched the whole thing go down. we arrived on the scene moments after it all happened. we want to show you video from right after that arrest was made. the people we talked to said they were driving down the street heading down southern highlands parkway southbound when a bunch of cop cars in front of them, lots of them unmarked, turned on their red and blue lights and told the people to get out of their cars, to back away immediately, began closing down the area. at that point, everyone got out and hung back while they figured out what was going on. as they watched these under underpolice box in the suspect vehicle, take the man out of the car and handcuff him. pretty surreal for someone to watch. listen to what one of the witnesses told us. what were you thinking when this was going down? >> i was wondering -- i thought about the situation earlier
6:14 pm
i was wondering if it was him around. i figured it was something like that. >> reporter: now, we have not confirmed this information, but a couple of my police sources are hearing the suspect was possibly fleeing his mother's residence in the southern apprehended. again, this is not confirmed information, but this is what police sources are telling me they've been hearing and we're communicating that to you. i'm staying on the scene. we'll get as much information as possible as bring it to you live and on line ktnv.com. >> thank you. >> thank you. there at the scene recapping for us what witnesses saw. we have been staying on top of this story all day. we've been first on the scene all day. we toss it to gina at umc. >> reporter: yeah. not too much new at umc. we heard all of that great new
6:15 pm
las vegas boulevard where stephanie is. answered a lot of questions. still no motive. the injured officer who is being treated at umc has been with the i spoke with another officer who walked by so minut -- 10 minutes ago. he said he's thrilled to hear that someone is in custody. he's doing well, but not well enough to go home. he will be spending the night at umc. that's the latest from the hospital. back to you. >> thank you very much. we're tossing it now over to stephanie. we'll get back to her. she wrapped up the press conference with sheriff lombardo. he looked happy. >> this could have been a bad situation. if you've been following our coverage through the afternoon, as soon as the sheriff gave his
6:16 pm
see the sense of relief in his body language that the news wasn't worse on the officer, that the officer was wounded under the arm but in a lot of pain. this could have been a lot worse. >> we want to thank one of our viewers, xavier, who sent iphone video of the police response to the shooting. it just turned out the sheriff was not far away at a luncheon. the silver suv -- we had no idea until we found out minutes ago, you're about to see a silver suv race away. guess who was in the suv? sheriff lombardo and his partner. that suv taking off were at a luncheon. they were the ones who saw the suspect running away and were able to give information about this person. the thing that's not answered,
6:17 pm
does this suspect on foot somehow manage to commandeer a vehicle and get to southern highlands, about 4-1/2 miles away from the shooting scene. but that silver suv, that was the first thing out of his mouth, that he was in that suv. he was leaving that scene. he saw the suspect running from this location. >> and that's the video there as they were pulling out of the parking lot. this video, xavier was getting this video from lee's liquor, which is that parking lot next to where this entire -- >> across the street. >> it's right there. they were told to shelter in place by the officers that you see there. this was literally just the moments after the shooting took place and the suspect crossing the path of the sheriff in that suv. >> what are the odds? what are the odds? we'll check in with stephanie, who's got more on what the sheriff had to say, his demeanor, wrapping up what's been a long day for law enforcement and our entire community. stephanie? >> reporter: lots to be proud
6:18 pm
lots to be relieved about. sheriff lombardo is proud of his officers for their response and proud of the public. he said he's proud of everybody in the community who reacted well to this, who cooperated with police on the barricades, on the shelter in place, on everything they put in place, especially at the scene, following their instructions so they could complete their investigation. he's proud of his officers for executing things the way they did. he said he was able to stop by his office today and found tons of good tips and video, also, from the public that helped them in their investigation. one big piece of the investigation that's missing is how the suspect got from here, this cordoned off area, this tight perimeter police put in place, to southern highlands. how did he get out of the perimeter and secondly, how did he get so far so quickly? they're thinking somebody else drove him there. they're hoping that wasn't the
6:19 pm
else helping the suspect in an officer-involved shooting. this they don't know. they don't know what the motive is behind the shooting. two big unanswered questions. even though he got out of the area and out of this perimeter, lombardo is proud of the way his officers handled things. he spoke with the partner of the injured officer. that fellow is very shaken up by what happened. he said that other officer, the second officer, was in the apartment complex walking around separate from the first officer who was injured when he heard gunshots and radioed in saying he thought that his fellow officer was shot. then he ran to him and found that that was indeed the case. he said that man still very shaken up about what happened today here on the scene. but he was uninjured. they said they believe the suspect, he, too, uninjured. still a lot of information coming out, although the scene is closed. the investigation is still active. lots of information we're still learning, even this late hour, even after hours and hours on
6:20 pm
for now we're live at las vegas boulevard, channel 13 action news. >> thank you. let's put chopper 13 back up on the air. we have an active scene where the suspect was taken into custody. chopper 13 first to show you this video as this was all unfolding. now that silver sedan in between the pickups with the flashing lights -- >> and the trunk is open. >> that is the suspect vehicle. you can see the unmarked units, the pickup trucks, all metro units able to box that guy in. that's where they made the arrest. still an active scene there. >> to recap, if you're joining us, metro police have a suspect in custody. this started as a domestic violence call at an apartment complex at the embassy suites on las vegas boulevard near pebble. two officers were sent. a retired metro lieutenant says domestic violence call. one officer got there first and
6:21 pm
nothing to do with the domestic violence call. that suspect opened fire on that police officer who approached him. we don't know what the motive is. but that police officer was not looking for that suspect. >> that was unprovoked. >> that was unprovoked. he was looking for a domestic violence call. his partner was looking in another location when this gunfire broke out. now that officer is at umc tonight. serious injury, but is expected to recover. wife and son at his side. >> there was talk he might be released tonight, but gina at umc told us a moment ago they decided to just play it safe and let the officer get some rest. no identification released on the officer or the suspect. as soon as we get that information, we'll be sure to pass it along. moving on to other news of the day, talks are underway in the state capitol over a deal that woud bring fairaday future to north las vegas. we'll have more from brian. he's been in carson city
6:22 pm
involves a lot of tax incentives to bring what would be a billion dollar factory as well as 4 or 5,000 jobs. >> an electric car factory that could be taking place. they hope to have the electric cars on the road by 2017. you're talking about a project that's being fast tracked. >> we'll try to get to brian in a moment. also tonight, a violent robbery at a doctor's office ended in gunfire. one of the suspects there is dead. the other was shot, but left the scene. police say a man and woman stormed into the office near charleston and rancho last night. they reportedly put the doctor, a patient, and a medical assistant into a room, pistol whipped the doctor and ransacked the office looking for drugs and money. the medical assistant ran to his car to get his gun. police say he opened fire, hitting both suspects. the man ran off. the woman died at umc. an accident today shut down both sides of the 215 between
6:23 pm
one person was killed. the accident scene obviously a serious situation there. a lot of debris on the road after the crash. nhp says the pickup was going south when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and hit the dump truck head on. the driver of the pickup died at the scene. the driver of the dump truck wasn't hurt. nhp doesn't know who caused the accident, who caused the pickup truck driver to swerve. baltimore is bracing for a possible retrial of the police officer, william porter, one of six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. a judge declared a mistrial yesterday after jurors couldn't decide whether the officer was to blame for gray's death. gray died april 19th a week after he suffered a spine injury in the back of a police van. prosecutors say porter failed to put gray in a seat belt and didn't call for a doctor when gray said he needed help. legal experts say it's hard to prosecute inaction. >> typically in cases where
6:24 pm
talking about what the police did. they shot someone. were they justified or not? here we're talking about what police officers didn't do. they didn't do enough. they didn't strap him in the seat belt. they didn't get him medical help. that's not an easy case to win. >> prosecutors are weighing their next step. they haven't announced whether or not they're going to retry porter. experts say they might offer him a plea deal in exchange for his testimony. don't go away. we'll be back after the break with the latest on breaking news we've been following all afternoon. chopper 13 live over the scene of the arrest. the suspect taken into custody there accused of shooting a metro police officer earlier this afternoon, actually at 11:00 this morning. we will bring you the very latest as we continue our live team coverage and video from

6:26 pm
is first on the scene all day today of this breaking news that we have been covering since about 11:00 -- since shortly after the shooting around 11:00 this morning. about 4-1/2 miles away from where the suspect was actually apprehended. that suspect vehicle is still there. now, what they did to catch the suspect, randy said was very, very risky business. they actually boxed him in with cars that were not marked and made it so he couldn't get away. they didn't chase him with a patrol vehicle, a black and white. they were able to get the suspect out of the vehicle. we did see, also, another person who was also sitting on the handcuffs. so we were speculating, randy was, that perhaps this person was carjacked or had no idea that the suspect was even wanted by police. >> exactly. >> we've been on top of this all day for you. >> let's go to gina live right
6:27 pm
where the officer is being treated. gina was on the scene when the ambulance rolled up with the wounded officer inside. she's joining us live with the latest on what we know about his condition. >> reporter: i was just going to recap. it's been a long day. been out here seven hours, a very hectic area, all blocked off. dozens of officers. i watched the injured officer get rolled into the hospital. he went to his room. his family came to join him. throughout the seven hours, we've learned so many developments. ending on a good note, knowing the officer is going to be okay. i was last told about a half hour ago he's talking with his family, very alert, obviously not good enough to go home tonight. he's going to spend the night in told. should be cleared to go home tomorrow. that about does it for us at umc. i believe we'll be checking back
