36 counts, approximately for every person injured. this is a massive investigation, there's going to be huge amounts of evidence they're going to have to be picked up from both the scene over there, and wherever they trace her to. because wherever she was living while she was here, needs to be examined, as well. >> perhaps the best news we got from the press conference is that the six people who were in critical condition are now all stable. and, boy, that is such a relief to hear. particularly as we know that here, very young. the youngest that we know of, 11 years old. tragically one person did die from their injuries. but we are pleased to hear from police that the six who were in condition. so, at least, you know, a glimmer of hope for some of those people. lives will forever be changed by
11:21 pm
>> and so, again, we want to update you on what we know about this female. a black female in her 20s driving a 1996 oldsmobile with oregon plates on the las vegas strip. hitting a group of 6 to 10 people. and then going off the sidewalk, and speeding up, according to witnesses, and then hitting another group of people. according to the witnesses we heard from tonight, some were just banging on the window trying to get this woman to stop, and just dragging some people with her, and with the car. apparently they detained her over at the tuscany, and apparently they are now drawing blood, and she is being detained at the detention center. again, they mentioned probably no new information tonight and we'll hear more from the press conference. they are confirming they've ruled out terrorism, this is an intentional crash, and emphatically, 20 minutes ago,
11:22 pm
now pretty emphatic this was intentional. she did this deliberately. >> this rachets up the investigation into a homicide investigation, a murder investigation, as well as each one of those people injured is going to be treated as a separate count of an attempt murder. >> action news has been live since 6:30 when we got word people have been hit. we continue to bring you live coverage because las vegas boulevard is the lifeblood of our city. thousands, if you work down there, thousands, if you play down there, trish and i were both down there tonight with our families. we want to bring you the very latest information. you do need to know that the strip is still shut down. that section where the accident happened between flamingo and harmon, so if you work in that area, avoid the boulevard all together. also, if you're using i-15, the flamingo exit is shut.
11:23 pm
of flamingo. still, a very active scene as police are trying to gather more evidence. talking to witness. the area will be shut down hours, avoid it completely if possible. >> randy, how is this accident going to impact the new year's eve celebration that happens on the las vegas strip with thousands on the sidewalks and streets. how will this change that? >> it is certainly going to heighten the security issues here. during the new year's eve celebration the strip is shut down to any vehicular traffic. so that means that if there's no cars on there, there's no threat from that particular arena. but, before it closes, and after it reopens, then this is going to play into the planning of that event, and future events. >> yeah.
11:24 pm
all of us tonight, what happened on the las vegas strip with this 36 people being hit by this woman in her 20s, and driving a 1996 oldsmobile. plowing into people, killing one. we do have good news. the six who were critical are no to metro, in stable condition. that's a bright light here tonight.dering what would cause this woman to do such a thing. what would cause her to do such a thing with a child in the back seat. that child could have been hurt, as well. we don't know if it was her babysitting. we can confirm that the 3-year-old in the car was not hurt. she is in the center. trying to figure out what her motive was, what would possess her to drive down such a busy part of the strip where people
11:25 pm
lightsen a the music. as police were telling us the gruesome details, i could hear pop music in the background like the party is till going. to the people on the strip, the party is over, at least tonight. it's a devastating night for the people who witnessed what happened. and certainly you saw people in costumes down there still trying to take pages, and but the reality is the show down the strip right now is a show of heartache and tragedy, and witnesses are sort of standing shocked, ago our reporters on the scene what happened down here, if they didn't actually witness it, now they know, word as spread. >> a massive crime scene, it will be taped off, and you won't be able to access flamingo until into tomorrow, it will still be a crime scene. >> because there's such a great distance from the initial where she stuck the people and continued on.
11:26 pm
where she was stopped is a crime scene and has to be processed by the crime scene analyst. it is a massive job and very, very time consuming. >> and jackie showed us from chopper 13 how far the street it goes. >> mahsa saeidi and others, tourists were involved, we heard from a witness. and he also learned that there was a fatal, and he was very emotional. and it speaks to everybody, even the first responders on the scene, this is an emotional night for everybody involved. >> when you're subjected to seeing people who are in pain, who are suffering these are images that fronters live with.
11:27 pm
these are very difficult investigations for the first responders, as well as for the victims, and the families. >> it's going to be really interesting to see what happens with her blood test to see if she was impaired at all. she was using prescription drugs, alcohol, we don't know, on some form of substance. just to plow into people and have absolutely no regard for life and continue to drag along people with a 3-year-old in the back, it seems like -- >> at 6:30 at night. when people are out having dinner with their families, a lot of young people on the strip. the youngest victim was 11 years old. there were a lot of other young people down there who saw what happened. because i was down on the strip earlier tonight and was struck by how many families were in town, in town for christmas break, winter holiday. we heard from one of the victims hit, his knee was hurt. 21 years old, in town celebrating his birthday with
11:28 pm
>> it is a joyous time before the holidays, you do get people depressed. and sometimes doesn't crime go up when people are depressed? >> there can be spikes. these are emotional times. there's sometimes there's a rise in the domestic situations that take place, because there's so much pressure during the holidays to, because of financial issues, and you never know what's going on in someone's mind. hopefully when homicide detectives talk to her, we'll probably get a picture of what her motivations are, if she is cooperating, and talking to the investigators. >> and we've heard from witnesses that the car went up on the sidewalk two different times, but jackie gave us a great view of where we saw cones in three different sections.
11:29 pm
been three sections of the strip where the car veered up onto the sidewalk. police are trying to sort that out. they're saying two or three, all of these lead them to believe the woman did this intentionally. >> they said they would be looking at all the surveillance cameras. that's one of the benefits to where this crime took place, they have this evidence. a lot of times they don't have this, the continued to of security we have on the las vegas strip, everybody's move is video taped. >> not only do you have all that video footage, and they'll trace it back to wherever she first came onto the strip. they're going to have to go through hours of this stuff. then have you all of the witness statements that have to be taken. we're probably talking hundreds of witnesses. >> it makes me wonder if there
11:30 pm
it was a man before who drove up and hit people. one of your friends was there and witnessed the whole thing. that men is spending over 500 years in prison for crashing into people intentionally on the strip. right after the accident bali's remodeled the front of their property and completely changed the whole pedestrian front of their property to try and protect people. this area in front of the paris, people walk there to see the eiffel tower. makes me wonder if we'll see changes in the future. >> the all you have is the sidewalk and -- >> the restaurant. that is incredibly busy. trying to make a right to the parish, there is groups and groups of people. and cabo's is set back. you could seesly hit that sidewalk and go into the

the sidewalk. if you've been on the strip even once, you know just how packed it is. and how incredibly dangerous this was. it is really a miracle that there were not more people seriously injured, to have 36 injured severely, to have one person killed as a result of this. it is just a tragedy. metro police, as you can see, the scene is still very active. the strip will be shut down the rest of the night, as we gather evidence, confirming that they believe it was an intentional act. they're going to be out there working all night to gather all of the evidence that they need, as they head into make a case against this woman. trying to learn more about the child in the back of the car. a 3-year-old who police have confirmed that was her child. riding in the back of the car,
