clothing, so we're trying to raise money by having people race with celebrities to, you know, get money for a good cause and it's fun. >> we honored that group here on our show, and they actually won $500 for the work that they do so we're familiar with them. >> i know you are. i saw them on your show and i said that's -- >> yes, that's the guy. i said i'll steal that idea. >> yeah. well, how much does this event cost? how does it work? >> well, basically if you want to race just like ten laps around the track, it's $25 and you can race and that's fun and the money goes to charity and you're having a good time at the same time and you can also run into the wall, knock people into the wall -- okay, we shouldn't do that. we'll be working for a different charity if that happens. >> that's late night. >> yeah, but for $100, hundred, i'm trying to do the boston thing, "a hundred dollah." for $100 you can race with celebrities, vegas celebrities so it's really fun and we've got some really good people. dao's gonna be there, yes.

her debut album, "know it all," is out now it's been winning the hearts of fans, critics, and even celebs like taylor swift. when you have the other celebrities listening to your stuff, that's how you know you're good. alessia's with us now. hi, alessia. alessia: hi, how are you? shawn: doing very well. very, very happy to get to talk to you today. not only am i here at channel 13, but i'm also at mix 94.1, and we were listening to what songs we should add and your song came across and it's one of those, you hear it once, you know it's gonna be a hit, you got to play it. congratulations on all the success! alessia: thank you so much. thank you, and i appreciate you playing it. that's awesome. shawn: so your song here, it's obviously been a global hit. when you're putting your first foot out there, like, okay, i hope everybody likes me. here's my first single from my first album. did you think it was gonna
9:16 am
have a feeling? alessia: i mean, i always had a gut feeling about it and i knew it was special. i didn't know where it was gonna fit or what was gonna happen with it, but of course you can never really prepare yourself for how big a song is gonna get or how quickly it's gonna explode, and it really just happened so fast and i didn't expect it. it just kind of hit me, like it blindsided me and, yeah, but it was an amazing blindside, if that makes any sense. shawn: yeah, it's the best kind of -- no, it's the best kind of blind side. better than in your car because then you have to stop and hand over insurance. it's a big pain. your album's called -- shawn: yeah, don't ever get in an accident, alessia. if you happen to, it's just such a pain. "know it all" is the name of the album. we actually see it over your shoulder. before we talk about the album, let's rewind six years ago. you're starting a youtube channel, and you're like in middle school. did you ever think it would happen this fast?
9:17 am
i knew i was meant to do this and i knew i was gonna do this eventually but i wasn't sure how or when or really why. i just knew it was gonna happen at some point but, you know, again, you never know and i can never prepare myself no matter what for like what happened, and it just really did happen very fast, a lot faster than i would have ever expected so, yeah. shawn: let's talk about the work going into this album, know it all, and how did you come up with the song list? how do you massage it down to those final few songs? alessia: well, i think initially we ended up recording 20 to 30 songs. shawn: wow! alessia: and on the deluxe edition of know it all -- yeah. and on the deluxe edition of know it all, there's 13 songs so we narrowed it down to 13. i mean, it's difficult because you get attached to the songs and of course they're all -- you made them so you get this sense of attachment to them but i think because i'm so focused on making an album whole and just making it a concept and a
9:18 am
only a few that really were in line with each other and kind of stayed in the same vein and that really represented what know it all is, and really know it all is the concept of growing up and really thinking that sometimes you know everything about life. in reality you don't so this is just a collection of 13 songs that i think, you know, these are just my opinions and thoughts on the world, and this is what i think i know but i'm still growing up and i don't really know much so i guess in a sense a sarcastic kind of title. shawn: you're learning as you go along a little bit. here's what to do with the extra songs, you hold them for the next album, or you wait like 50, 60 years when it's all said and done, all of a sudden you're like tupac and you're dropping new music because you've just had them ready to go for years. you're just ready to go. alessia, you have a big smile on your face -- alessia: exactly, yeah. shawn: i know this is your last satellite interview of the day, you've had a very long day. this is a stretch. relax and congratulations on the new album. alessia: thank you so much,
9:19 am
shawn: got to hear her music. alessia cara's debut album called "know it all." it's available now and if you want to learn more, just visit the website you see, alessiacara.com. >> her focus to help people here and abroad get the eye care they desperately need. marjula stebbing is a certified ophthalmic technician with shepherd eye center. >> she joins us now to share her story and how you can help too. good morning to you and welcome. >> well, good morning. thanks for having me. >> can you tell us about the eye related volunteer work that you do here and abroad? >> absolutely. back in 2010, i was part of a group that went to zambia, africa, and over there we -- several things we did besides eye care, there was dentistry, there was people that did sewing, there was people that-- teachers, and we went there for a conference to teach
9:20 am
with their skills and help them so they would, you know, be able to earn a living for their families. i trained about 40 african missionaries how to do simple eye exams, how to go out to the bush where there's no eye care at all, no medical care at all, and i took kits, these kits i have here that for them to do these simple eye exams, it's really rather simple, you go better one, better two and there's several lenses that you stack up and try to get to the closest power that the patient needs and so these local people then would be able to go and give this care. besides training them or helping them with this, we did five days of clinic where the students that i was able to train then helped me and we were able to see hundreds of
9:21 am
prescribe -- give them eyeglasses, even simple eyeglasses. here we are so blessed, we have so much and over there people are truly blind and even a simple pair of even readers would make a difference, you know, from seeing or not seeing. getting a job or going to school or not being able to do any of those things that we do here. >> it's really incredible work that you're doing. >> yes. >> and you went with two physicians from shepherd eye center as well, and that was obviously a little bit different than the first trip. >> yes, last year i went with tina reddy and ravi reddy. we went to the dominican republic and they did 90 cataract surgeries there, and i partnered -- i went with them but then i partnered with local optometrists, and we were able to see about 500 people there and prescribe -- i took probably about 800 pair of glasses so we gave the glasses and that was an incredible serving opportunity there. >> that's awesome. >> yeah, you've changed so many people's lives for the better
9:22 am
what have you done? >> well, here locally, i feel blessed that i'm working for shepherd eye center for the past 20 years. they really have a heart for giving, and our physicians, tina reddy, ravi reddy, dr. steven montgomery, robert taylor have-- we volunteered for thanksgiving day for the blessed fest so i was able to donate about 2,000 pair of glasses to them so i take the glasses home, i clean them, i fix them, i have my kitchen becomes a lab. i measure them and i categorize them ready for the doctors to prescribe and give. so they had that service for the homeless here in town. dr. taylor has also volunteered for the inner city schools and inner city kids giving them also eye exams and glasses so that's what we've done locally here. >> can we donate a pair of
9:23 am
or do something to help you also? >> please do, please do. you can donate to any shepherd eye center location. we have four, and if you donate your glasses, children's glasses, adult glasses, i will make sure they get to the hands of the people that really, really need it so please donate the glasses. >> well, you're really giving these kids and these people freedom. without your vision, you're lost. >> absolutely. i can tell you a quick story of two brothers that i took care of in africa and they were teenagers, and they were as near-sighted as theieiage probably, minus 15. something ridiculous. you can't even count fingers here. so i gave them glasses and they were in awe. both of them. they were like looking at the trees, looking at the -- for the first time they saw. >> it's like regaining vision. >> right. so they could get a job, go to school, do those things that we just, you know, take for granted here. so it was amazing. that made my trip. >> so many people get lasik and these eye surgeries and they don't need these glasses anymore so don't throw them away.
9:24 am
>> there's a purpose for people to use them. >> if you get cataract surgery, lasik surgery and you have a bunch of glasses, please donate because we will use them. next year, we are actually going to calcutta in june. >> excellent. >> so, yeah. dr. ravi reddy and dr. tina reddy we're sending a team there so all the glasses i'm starting to collect now will be for that trip in calcutta. we're planning to see a lot of children. there's a lot of homeless children there so if you have children's frames as well, we're collecting those. >> well, i have a bunch of glasses at home in a drawer. i'm going to get it out and give it to you. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. you're welcome. >> thank you so much. >> my pleasure. >> thank you for all the work that you do. >> again, marjula stebbing is a shepherd eye clinic technician. if you would like to learn more about the volunteer work they do, check out the website or call the number right there on your screen. there you can also find which of their four locations is

shop while making a difference. dinosaurs and roses, the pop up shop is here to reach out and touch as many people with bargains that give back. >> here to explain, executive director, michelle morgan. great to see you again. how are you? >> great to see you. >> welcome. >> happy holidays. >> same to you. >> you too. can you tell us about your store for people who have not gotten a chance to shop there? >> yes, well we have a fantastic shop at tivoli, actually we're so excited cause it's two shops in one, and we're located on the second floor in the lv market, and the first store is our holiday shop, which has everything in there that you need to make your christmas a lot merrier. i brought some ornaments and we have some lennox china. >> oh, wow. >> and we have some name brand things at amazingly affordable prices. we have decor, gifts, and then our second shop, which is right next door to that, has everything from

artwork, amazing artwork. i wish i could of brought some because if you have a big floor to ceiling, we've got it all. >> nice. >> that's awesome. >> we have a whole room dedicated towards pottery that looks like this. >> awesome. >> that for the holidays will be featuring great sales on, and it's like your one stop shopping for everything that you need to give. >> do you have new things and gently used things? >> no. >> or it's all -- what is? >> at tivoli -- >> okay. >> -- it's all brand new. >> it's all new merchandise. >> everything is one of a kind designer pieces that we were so blessed to get from the world market center and from various galleries and other entities in town. >> so you're able to get in there while us shlubs can't. you get all the cool stuff and you're able to bring it to the store, which is awesome. >> we bring it to the store and the best part about it is that every purchase is something you can feel good about because the proceeds go to support our emergency assistance program, which is out of our thrift
9:27 am
and 95, and that's where we do the beautiful work we do in the community. >> explain how this program works because you're not just the shop obviously. you give things as well. >> right. we started out as everyone knows as a thrift store, which is still there. and every monday we take letters and referrals from low income families and families that are struggling and we give away coats and clothes and shoes, and with our referral program buying these things go to support those people that are so desperate in need for things that we take for granted like a warm coat. >> awesome. >> so the shop funds everything that you do? >> yes, yes. >> so it's so important for us to go shopping there. >> absolutely. >> and buy something because it gives back. >> yeah, and we also have a place at the meadows mall as well, and that has big furniture and 3,000 square feet worth of more goodies. the tivoli shop is really sweet because it's a real treasure-trove. the way it's designed, we have vignettes in every room and
9:28 am
and decorate your house. it's all set up for you. >> that's so cool. i love it. are you accepting donations? >> yes, and we are actually desperate for donations. >> okay. >> so we love you to clean out your closet, your attic, and your garage and please donate to us. give us a call, if you have big items, we'll pick up but you can drop off at any of our locations at tivoli, at the meadows as well as trop and 95 at the thrift store. >> awesome. >> and obviously if someone wants to cut you a check, they can do that directly? >> that would be my angel from heaven because so many times we get a call for things that we just don't have and those are the things that we like to go out and purchase for the people that are in need. >> and the community -- the need in the community is always -- it's growing. >> it's growing every day. it's amazing to me how many letters i receive from people that just don't have the basics and the necessities like shoes. you know, we are constantly giving away shoes to people that just don't have it.
9:29 am
at this time of year to reach out and it's not only this holiday, it's 365 days a year that people are in need. >> no question. >> what are your hours at the thrift store? >> the thrift store is open -- all of our stores are open every single day, seven days a week. >> oh, wow. >> so that's one of the things. the thrift store is open from 10 to 6. meadows is the meadows mall hours. >> okay. >> and tivoli is open from 11 to 6 and 8. >> awesome. and if people want more information, they can go to your website? >> absolutely. and i always be happy to take any phone call from anyone that wants to discuss and also if anyone wants to volunteer, we love volunteers as well. >> well, we're happy for all of your success because i remember you started off on charleston -- >> yes. -- and jones and now you've moved your way to bigger place and better locations. >> you're all over the place now, you're spread out. >> it's wonderful. >> we are and just real quick, we have 500 bridal gowns if anybody needs a bridal gown, you can pick up a bridal >> where? >> trop and 95. >> how did you get

any longer than you have to be. i'm so glad my mom got me tuned into the cold-eeze, cold remedy products a long time ago. i always have them around. the classic cherry lozenge is clinically proven to shorten the duration of the common cold by 40 percent. you've got cleveland clinic and dartmouth college science behind that one. if you've got a couple of things going on, maybe some chest congestion or a cough, the multi-symptom quick melts, they're gonna help tremendously. and if you think you might be coming down with something at the first sign of that cold, you want to reach for the multi-symptom relief lozenges. again, great things to keep around whenever you may go. now, another thing that happens at this time of year, aches and pains because not only are we trying to cram in a workout, maybe not stretching as much and our muscles are getting sore, elf work is tough people. i know this because i help my folks out at the holidays. i love doing it, but i'm carrying boxes and, you know, stringing lights and using my arms in different ways so before pain gets in the way, you want to take action.

reaching for arnicare gel. it works on muscle pain, stiffness, swelling from injuries, and bruising. what's great about it is that it contains a natural active ingredient, the mountain daisy. it goes on clear, it's nongreasy, it's cooling to the skin, and my favorite thing. it's unscented so no one's gonna notice that you might be having some discomfort because of that smell that's following you around... it's great for that. so basically, all these things... great for the holidays and beyond. to get some more information, you can go to videopump.tv and for more tips in general, you can always check out laura loves fitness.com. thank you so much and have a great holiday season. >> our friends at channel 13 action news invite you to download the all new action news app. >> it's fast, simple to use, and has incredible weather radar to keep you safe the next time there's a storm abrewing. you can get the new action news app free in the app store and in the google play store. >> tomorrow on our special christmas eve show, the cd that does more than just play your yuletide favorites.
