tv Morning Blend ABC December 24, 2015 9:00am-10:00am PST
9:00 am
i know you've been preparing. you've had your tree up for five years for this very moment. >> i never take it down. i love christmas. my honey, michael, loves christmas so much. we celebrate every single day, and it's just magical. he's like a kid in a candy store. i can't wait. i'm hanging out with some friends and some family, and it's going to be a beautiful day. >> awesome. very cool. >> yes. now coming up today on the morning blend, we have a lot in store for you. plus, getting you into the yuletide spirit with the performances of holiday classics. the cd that's giving back to one special group. >> plus, you'll meet the adorable blake. blake needs a forever home. how to make that dog yours coming up. >> now, first up, many of you will be in the kitchen today and tomorrow putting the finishing touches on your christmas day meal. don't skip out on the sides. we have a creative twist your friends and family will absolutely love. >> that's right. here with more is chef doreen fang. hello again. >> hello. how are you guys? >> great to see you. >> great to see you again. i can't believe it's christmas already. >> baby it's cold outside.
9:01 am
i'm shivering. >> christmas tomorrow. it's not to late to make a cool side dish though. >> no, and that's the thing because it is tomorrow, if you don't have a lot of time, i've created something that's very easy, very simple and for those of you who don't cook a lot, you can actually do it in a very simple style. >> yes. >> it's shawn proof is what you're saying? >> yeah, it is shawn proof. >> part homemade, part store bought if you want to. >> exactly, but i recommend that you make your own potatoes so i'm going to be making a caramelized leek and thyme boursin cheese mashed potato. >> okay. >> you guys know what boursin cheese is? >> i do. you've taught me years ago. >> we've seen the box at the grocery store. >> she actually bought one. >> you can get your little spoon, put your finger in it.
9:02 am
>> so try it?eah. caramelize it, you just slowly cook it. if you can see how it just kind of darkens. >> leeks are so ignored sometimes. they're delicious. >> they are delicious and when you really cook them down, the flavor is incredible. make sure you season it properly. >> smells phenomenal in here. >> yeah, smells really good. >> thank you. i've already started the leeks because i want it to get nice and caramelized, nice and soft. >> okay. >> this probably takes about 20 to 30 minutes. be patient. okay. that'll be the only thing that takes a little time. you're going to add a little thyme. crumbled the cheese. if you don't crumble it, it >> okay. >> you're just going to put it in, and you're going to have it just melt down. i would keep your heat just on a little low it can gently melt. you're going to have your potatoes already ready, they're hot so people are at the table waiting for the mashed potatoes to come out. >> stomach's growling. >> exactly. >> what the heck is doreen making? it's killing me. that's what they're all saying. >> because it smells so delicious. >> yeah.
9:03 am
slowly melting in. >> oh, that's nice. >> really easy. >> look creamy. >> it is creamy. >> nice. >> delicious. i actually had a friend who already just loves putting in boursin cheese in your mashed potatoes. >> yeah. >> but the leek and thyme, like i said, just gives it an extra element. >> texture, yeah. >> i would have never thought to put any of that stuff in my mashed potatoes. >> you like it typically -- >> with tons of butter and garlic. >> butter fixes everything. >> sometimes if you do the garlic sometimes. >> heavy cream or half and half? >> yeah, cream. yeah, but never this combination. >> it's so good. >> it sounds interesting and a twist. >> yes, there is a twist. okay. and it's all done, all right. you're just going to get your potatoes, you're just going to add it in. i get every little bit of everything. >> of course. well, that's creamy goodness you do not want to waste that. >> exactly. and there's buttery goodness in there too. here, i'll let you mix that up. just fold it all in. >> all right. >> this couldn't be any easier. >> and it smells great and also looks really cool too. because just plain old here's
9:04 am
gravy i bought. it's not good enough. >> or you could serve up different versions for yourself. >> exactly. you could do like a mashed potato bar. >> oh, nice. >> you could do your garlic butter potatoes. you could do this -- >> the irish side of me just reached heaven when you said that. that was amazing. yes. mashed potato bar would be the greatest invention ever. >> i know, right? >> bacon. give me some bacon. >> oh my -- you know what, if you wanted to, you could add some bacon to this. obviously.
9:05 am
>> that's all we need to dodip now. >> how do i do my prime rib? >> yeah, a lot of salt or do you -- >> yeah. you got to put enough seasoning so don't be very gentle -- i mean, not don't be. very generous with the salt and if you like garlic, pepper, all that kind of good stuff, and just crust it on there.d

ooo-ooo pick of the litter. meet the sweet blake. christmas is tomorrow and all he wants for a present is a new fur-ever home. make it yours. >> if you tell me dogs can't smile, my goodness. that's so cute. welcome him into your home is cathy jung, president of the nevada spca. how are you? >> i'm great, thank you. >> he's adorable. >> blake is adorable and he loves the taste of your hand. >> he loves... yes, yes. it's probably this morning's >> he loves to kiss. >> who knows. >> what's blake's story? >> blake is a senior, he's 11 years old. you know, being christmas eve, we try to focus on maybe some little christmas miracles, seeing some of these guys go home because
9:20 am
like it, gets puppies and kittens for christmas. the senior dogs need love too. >> yeah. >> and the great thing about senior dogs is they're over the chewing, they're over the... all they want to do is cuddle. they just want somebody's lap to curl up on. he's great with other dogs, he's great with kids, he just needs a family to take him in. >> and how do we adopt him? >> come down to the sanctuary at 4800 west dewey drive. we are open today, limited hours, but we are open. if you have a dog, please bring it down. let's do a meet and greet in the lobby, because maybe this isn't your senior. maybe one of our other ones is. >> he's a sweet boy. my goodness. i just saw him behind the scenes, too. very soft, very playful, very, very cute. giving a pet as a christmas gift. >> okay. >> unless you are part of the responsible party taking care of the animal. >> so it's not a good thing where the uncle just gives it to the other family? >> oh, absolutely. because a couple things going on, maybe mom doesn't want a dog. maybe she's not... maybe she doesn't want a cat. maybe there's so much going on
9:21 am
want the added responsibility, because they are a huge responsibility. >> yeah. >> and maybe the dog that you like isn't the dog that dao likes, so it's really part of bringing somebody into your own family so not a good idea to give a pet as a gift. we do have gift cards however, so let them come in and bring the whole family and let them pick their family member. >> yeah, you have a lot of options down at the shelter. >> yeah, absolutely. >> now, you have a special going on, is it this week for senior dogs or for the month? >> yeah, it's a special for today, so if you come down and you adopt a pet today, there's a little gift basket that comes. we have some volunteers that put together some gift baskets to go home with everybody that gets a home today. >> that's great. >> so it's really, really great. it was something special that they put together for the residents there. >> and do events like this and special like these and to get the gift baskets ready and to make sure the pets are ready, you need volunteers... you need an army really. >> oh, absolutely. we can always use volunteers because the staff is so
9:22 am
them, medicating the ones with special needs, taking care of the sick ones, the newborns, cleaning, feeding that we need volunteers to come up and walk them, to play with them in the courtyard, to brush the cats, to trim the bunny's nails. we always could use volunteers to do that. >> there's always something to do at the shelter. >> now, you were just talking about volunteers. you also need volunteers to step in and become foster parents as well because they take care of the animals that you don't at the shelter? >> oh, absolutely. just this summer we received an overwhelming amount of foster kittens and puppies. collectively, there was 1200 puppies and kittens that we took in and we couldn't have done that without the foster program that we have. so it's about people opening their home and the nice thing about when you foster with us, we will let you come in and help us pick out the parents that your foster puppies and kittens go home to. >> oh, that's great. >> you get a say in that then? >> yes, you do get a say in that plus you also get -- if you become attached to one of them, you get first pick of the litter. >> that's excellent.
9:23 am
a kitten, you don't want them necessarily being initially raised inside a you want them in a warm home environment. >> where they're getting kissing and hugs 24 hours a day, where they're just getting... they can wake up in the morning in your bed, that's how we want them raised. >> yeah, they can get a lot of specialized attention in someone's home hopefully. >> yes. >> now, you can also use donations this time of the year. what kinds of things can we get you? >> beside money, we can always use the financial support. it's cold outside so blankets, pillows, anything like that, towels because everybody gets a new towel and a new blanket in the morning. fresh bedding then we can always use cleaning supplies, which is bleach and simple green. anything that's nontoxic to the animals. we can always... and lots of toys. everybody gets a new toy on christmas eve. so i get to help make the run through the kennels and give everybody a new toy. >> you're gonna have to buy out the whole petco. right. >> it's great having you, thank you so much. >> thanks so much. >> thank you. merry christmas to you. >> and if you'd like to adopt
9:24 am
you got to get him into your home. come down to the nspca today. it's on west dewey drive on decatur, which is on decatur north of russell. if you want more information, limited hours today. and don't forget the nspca has a christmas dedication, which is a special gift basket given to those who adopt senior dogs and animals with advanced challenges. chestnuts roasting on an open fire jack frost nipping at you yuletide carols being sung by a choir

>> it was fantastic. you know, the new store opened up on september 21, and i couldn't be happier. i mean, we have had so many people come into the store. we have changed the face of how people buy and sell in the city of las vegas. there's nobody that pays more. the business is growing each and every day with more and more customers. we're a free standing store, no suite number. coin and jewelry experts in one place. there's nobody that has the technology. i built a special page on the website now for people to go and see all the technology. there's nobody that has the technology that i have. nevada coin mart is the industry leader when it comes to jewelry and coin buying in las vegas. >> and you're open basically every day? >> open 365 days a year. here's the thing, we're open christmas day and we were open on thanksgiving. the best part about being on thanksgiving is we changed lives. there were clients that came in that needed turkey dinner,
9:30 am
and we were able to help them and change their life. so when you come to nevada coin mart, we are a big supporter of the veterans here in las vegas. we do a lot of stuff with the charity so when you come in, you're not only supporting what it is that we do but you're supporting the community of las vegas. >> absolutely. christmas eve is actually today, tomorrow being christmas day. what if people have a last minute gift or two to get. collectibles, a great gift idea, isn't it? >> well, i'm a little biased. >> yeah, well, you've got a lot of collectible gifts. >> we have a quite a bit of stuff here for sale and of course we buy everything you see. there's a nice $20 gold piece from 1924. we have proof sets, eisenhower dollar coin sets. >> oh, wow, look at that. that's amazing. >> that's a really interesting piece of eight set here. this here. >> okay. >> that was made -- it's a limited edition set made by the mexico mint. >> oh, wow. >> it's got 12 ounces of silver. >> it's beautiful. >> pretty amazing.
9:31 am
a collectible that trades well above its silver value. >> and there's a lot of that. it's not just -- when you look at something like this, you don't look at this and go, oh, that's the value of the gold. that's the speciality of that coin in its own right. >> absolutely, absolutely. >> yeah. when that was made, that was just money. >> and now... >> now it's a collectible. >> it's a lot more money. >> do you think people realize what they have in their homes, in jars, containers? >> well, today i brought a selection of those kinds of things specifically to show people. we have the ubiquitous silver certificate. there are millions of these floating around and if you're curious what those are worth, bring them in. we'll be happy to tell you what you have. >> and i see right up there it says silver certificate, more than just $1. this is back when this $1 stood for silver? >> that was actually the iou for silver. >> wow.
9:32 am
the u.s. treasury for what was then real money or silver. >> yes. >> and a lot of our customers of course buy silver, silver coins like this because they still believe this is real money, as many hard asset people do. before the little ones were made, they used make these. >> oh, wow. look at this. >> there's a $5 silver certificate made in 1914. if you bring this to the reserve right now, what will they do? >> they'd be happy to give you $5 for it. >> that's terrible. wow. >> so the thing is that when it comes to buying any type of coins, any type of collectibles, any type of paper currency, nevada coin mart buys and sells any type of paper money or anything like what you see here. so with john being a coin expert for the last 50 years, his knowledge is unparalleled when it comes to anybody in las vegas. so if you want a coin expert to look at what you have, again, we are open on christmas day and so john has all these items that we... that are available for buying if
9:33 am
or something like that on top of which if you have those items and you want a coin expert to look at them, john is available and we are there from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. we will check everything with a $30,000 x-ray spectrometer. if you want to test the gold, i now have a new precious metal verifier to verify exactly that your gold is all the way gold all the way through. when you bring that in, we're gonna evaluate it. when it comes to the jewelry, any type of jewelry. you know, you asked about do people know what they have? you know, the thing is that most people don't really know what they have. so the best thing they can do is bring in everything, whether it's jewelry. i buy gold, silver, turquoise, costume. any type of jewelry. john is especially knowledgeable when it comes to bronze statues and stuff like that. so we can bring those in. anything that you want to sell, the first thing you should do is call nevada coin mart
9:34 am
leader in buying coins, collectibles, and jewelry. >> and you also have a special going on right now? >> right. so when it comes to... if you come in, i was at glazier's last night and so mr. g and mrs. g and billy are doing that big promotion where they... for the turkey and the primrib for christmas. you can call, i already spoke to him, call right now and you can order that and if you come into the store, if you sell $200 or more, you get a $50 gift certificate. the important thing is this, when you come to nevada coin mart, there's only one nevada coin mart. neil sackmerry is there. i'm there from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and when you want the real deal, come and see neil. >> awesome, wow. i like that trademark, that was good. gentlemen, great having you, thank you so much. >> thanks so much. >> merry christmas. >> merry christmas. let the professionals at nevada coin mart appraise your coins and jewelry, it can be worth far more than face value. you can visit their new location on south jones at flamingo. you can also call them
