and just days ago a deadly crash right on the strip... proving how easy it would be to hurt a lot of people in a matter of seconds right on las vegas boulevard. all of this means new year's has a different feel. sheriff joe lombardo, lvmpd 10:15:15-10:15:24 "during new year's eve we cancel all vacations and we request everybody to be availabe. this new year's eve we are putting them to work." the threat isn't stopping the party though. hundreds of thousands of people will be here for new year's eve. mixing and mingling with them will be hundreds of officers-- close to a thousand on the strip and 300 downtown. mayor carolyn goodman 10:06:25-10:06:30 "i have total faith in the preparedness of law enforcement." the scary part is there have been threats made against las vegas for new year's. in fact, the number of 911 calls reporting suspicious activity has more than doubled over the past few weeks. so far none have panned out. they're making changes anyway... standup: big bulky bags like these they're saying leave them

it's hard to tell what's inside. they will ask to search them... but it's not mandatory. right after the attacks on paris... the sheriff wanted to make some changes for new years... that push got started just last month... inlcuding rules outlawing bags and strollers on the strip for new year's... with such a late start there wasn't enough time for the ordinance to pass. 10:19:38-10:19:42 "i don't have the descriptive of the law or the language how it would read, but we will work through those nuances." they're hoping to pass an ordinance for next year. near the strip parker collins channel thirteen action news.> the question some are asking is... will the strip... be shooting off any fireworks... on new year's eve? the threat of strong winds... could put a damper.... on the show. show organizers say... sustained winds of -10- miles an hour or more... is all it would take... to cancel the show... because of the potential... for debris to fall... onto the crowds. according to show organizers... there's no way to tell.... what will happen... until that midnight..... moment.

she has more on who could be to blame. gina? look at what's left of this vacant building.. boarded up doors and windws burnt in the fire....and are now being re-boarded! i say re-boarded because this abandoned motel was already boarded up after a fire a year and a half ago.... an now....another fire. "it's because the homeless people are going in. the property has been abandoned for a really long time and then in the winter time they go in there and try to keep warm and then the fire starts." fire officials did confirm the fire back in 20-14 was set by squatters. they say its too soon to blame this one on squatters....but there's definitely a chance for that. multiple local businesses in the area told me today - the homeless issue is huge. according to workers in the area - the homeless people don't just mind their own business......they cause problems. "they're everywhere and the problem is, there's a vacant lot here where they're starting fires here...living in the vacant lot, i've driven by...i've seen people using drugs there and i don't know
